I saw the new flavors for the Lay’s ‘Do Us a Flavor’ contest at the store today and bought one of each. For those who don’t know, the finalists this year are:
Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger
Wavy Mango Salsa
Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese
Cappuccino
So far I’ve tried the Wasabi Ginger and I think it’s pretty good. Has just a little bit of a bite to it. Definitely a keeper.
I actually kind of like the cappuccino flavor, mostly for the novelty of it. The cheddar bacon mac n’cheese is pretty good, and I’d vote for it. I still need to taste the other two.
(Note: I didn’t buy it, it was sitting around the break room at work because obviously someone else didn’t find the flavor/texture combo appealing. I didn’t think it tasted bad, just kinda wrong).
I found all four flavors at the supermarket on Saturday. I rejected the cappuccino out of hand as being just wrong (in much the same way as maple syrup-flavored potatoes are wrong), but I bought a bag of each of the others.
I thought the bacon mac and cheese tasted okay at first bite, but definitely had a we-cooked-these-chips-in-bacon-fat flavor to me, that I could see making me real tired of it, really fast.
I couldn’t really detect the ginger and wasabi essences, but that might have more to do with the fact that I really don’t care for kettle-fried potato chips, and I was distracted by the unpleasant way they felt in my mouth.
Mango salsa was the most pleasant, but still seemed wrong; pretty sure the reason is that my brain still thinks mango salsa is for tortilla chips. These chips should taste more of corn, my brain kept saying. When does the corn flavor kick in?
I’m going to pass on the contest, this time around.
If they do it again, I might submit a flavor of my own: how does beer and Viagra sound?
I can never find the ones I want to try. All I’ve seen is the Cappuchino and Mango Salsa, neither of which sounds good to me. I haven’t seen the other flavors at the store. The last contest I never saw any of them in the store until it was over. I wish they had these available in smaller bags just to try.
The Wasabi Ginger sounds good but I wish it weren’t kettle cooked. That type of chip feels to me like I’m eating shards of glass.
In the UK Lays are known as “Walkers” and they are also having a flavour contest. The six finalists are:
[ul]
[li]Hot Dog with Tomato Ketchup[/li][li]Pulled Pork in a Sticky BBQ Sauce[/li][li]Ranch Raccoon[/li][li]Chip Shop Chicken Curry[/li][li]Sizzling Steak Fajita[/li][li]Cheesy Beans on Toast[/li][/ul]
None of these sound good to me, but none seem as strange as Cappuccino. It’s interesting how different the two selections are.
Canada is also having our own flavour contest with:
Jalapeno Mac N’ Cheese
Cinnamon Bun
Tzatziki
Bacon Poutine
My wife said the Tzatziki chips are pretty good and I really like the Bacon Poutine. I can’t work up the courage to buy the Cinnamon Bun and after last year’s disgusting Grilled Cheese and ketchup I refuse to try anything with a cheese flavour.
Can we go back to this for a second? According to the website this is “A delicious combination of gamey meat flavour, with accents of sour cream and a garlic kick. They complement one another beautifully.”
Gamey meat flavour? Are these chips actually supposed to be raccoon flavored?
In Canada there is a tzatziki flavoured kettle cooked chip that is great. There is also jalapeno mac n’ cheese but it isn’t great. The bacon poutine flavour is just passable and I am not going to try the cinnamon bun flavoured ones.
Last year there was a caesar salad flavour that was great. I wish they had kept it.
