This is kind of a weak sauce rant arising from semantics. I am just fed up with “your” ads that have that little link that says “Learn More”. Oh, goody, I get to “learn” about your product/service, how very wonderful. Learning is good, right?
FTN (fuck that noise), “you” just want to try to fill my head will daisies and butterflies. If I really want to learn about what “you” are selling, I will go to one of those sites that have genuine user reviews (not your lame-ass testimonials). Just once I want to see an info link that spells it out plain: “The Hype”.
There’s the tiniest greasy spoon cafe that I bike past. I’ve stopped in, but only when I want “2 eggs n toast” for two bucks. One way they keep their costs down is by not spending money on ingredients (the eggs n toast are from the Aldi) or heat, or a mop … or employees that give a shit.
But they suddenly put up a huge banner in the window with a web address. And just as I was puzzling who would take the time to type their name in a browser window, they added another banner: ***LIKE US! (On Face Book)! ***
Really? When no one actually LIKEs you in real life?
Hey, I, for one, appreciate the OPs redundant elucidation. I certainly wouldn’t have figured out that FTN stands for fuck that noise, at least not right away and while my first choice would be that he not abbreviate at all, abbreviating with a parenthetical explanation is preferable to a lone initialism.
It’s just a stage in the popularity of abbreviations. The idea is that, if it becomes common, such an explanation will no longer be necessary. Every abbreviation had to be explained at some point–that’s how they work.
And it’s much better than “FTN, or fuck that noise,…”
That movie saved Neil Patrick Harris’s career. It was also one of the all time best movies that came out that week (no but seriously, I love that movie, noone else I know seems to get it).
Oh, that drives me insane. Any time you have to use parentheses to further explain what you’re trying to say, you’re fucking doing it wrong. There’s somebody around here I’ve noticed who uses medical terms and then puts the plain English phrase in parentheses. Yes, yes, you took a semester of med terms at your local community college. Congratulations. Now stop being such a dick. She reminds me of a nurse I did my surgical clinicals under. I hated that bitch.
The only guy around here who “got it” finally got tired of arguing about how Verhoeven was a genius when faced with the massive amount of evidence to the contrary.
