Asylum, the whole game for me depends on the graphics since the audio does nothing for me because Im deaf. I really would think they could have used better graphics. I do appreciate the fact that they subtitle the game. Does it have speech?
Not really. A character might say “hello” or something, but everything else is test.
And if the game was a spelling test I’d fail. “Text”
…which I personaly prefer. For this style game, it’s better to not have tons of voice acting. You get the just as much from watching their detailed facial expressions.
Little update for me: I just faced the second boss and had next to no trouble. Perhaps the first one was just…harder.
Got this game the other day. I haven’t had alot of time to really sit down and get into the story, but I just got the boat so I think I am still really early on.
Some observations though:
-
I am undecided on the graphics. I think I would have preferred more realistic graphics. Take a look at Link in the new Soul Calibur 2 for GCN. He looks amazing. This is the first cel shaded game I have played, but it looks kind of plain.
-
I may be one of the only ones who thinks this, but I think that they should have had voice acting instead of subtitles. There is really not any reason for sub titles on games nowadays, though for people in handy’s situation they are nice to have. I just don’t like clicking and reading this stuff anymore. I think Nintendo probably does this because they know that all their games come out in Japan and the US and it is much easier to just change the text than re record the voices.

The controls are really good. Though that sidle move is sometimes a pain in the ass to get to work. You really gotta hit the wall at the perfect angle in order for the option to pop up.

I wish they would have made it so that you could skip the little cut scenes once you had seen them. Like when you are walking around the Foresaken Fortress and you walk into a room with those patrollers. It stops and pans around so you can see them every single time. Kind of annoying.
All in all it seems like a good game. MUCH better than Mario Sunshine. I am gonna try to beat this game over the next week before I go back to school.
As far as the cutscenes go I think that’s a coverup for the level loading. You notice that it always kicks in when you enter certain areas, regardless of direction and remember, the world and levels in this game range from large to huge. I’d prefer no load times as well, but at least this way you get something to look at instead of a frozen screen.
I’d agree that the subtitles are annoying. I don’t like to take my eyes off the graphics to read what might be important info.
I think Starfox did it great with no subtitles and all voice. It gave the characters more depth.
I love the graphics.
I, for the most part, like the “realistic” style… BUT, I wouldn’t change a thing about the graphics in this game. I like cheeseburgers, but if you ask me one Tuesday or one Thursday if I wanted a cheeseburger, I JUST MIGHT SAY NO! Well, same with this game, I’m glad they made it the way they did. It works! Do I want it all the time, no… perhaps I could go for something entirely new next time.
At lease Nintendo is trying to mix it up a bit. Probably one of the reasons I didn’t like Mario Sunshine was that it was exactly like Mario 64 to me, (The graphics improved a great deal, but not as much as they should have. The style was pretty much the same). Yoshi’s Island for the SNES was a great change, and one of the best platforms of all time.
I sold Mario Sunshine as soon as I completed it cause I thought the graphics were way behind what the GC could do. They could have been more Metroid-ish. So, im gonna sell Wind Waker too after I complete it & save the dough for the next Final Fantasy game, if it comes out for the GC.
Well, Final Fantasy X, XI, and XII will not come out for the Cube, but they are creating a unique Final Fantasy game for it called Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles. It does look neat.
I for one, think the graphics on Wind Waker are phenomenal. Well thought out game.
Heh, I bought my copy of Zelda two days ago and I haven’t touched it yet. Why? Amplitude for the PS2 came out
Anyone else but me is completely addicted to Amp? I know at least two other people hehe
You sold a game just because the graphics were “way behind what the GC could do”?
Well, if there’s a cutscene showing the level, it obviously has loaded. Also, it doesn’t show that cutscene every time you enter an area, only the first time.
I love this game a lot, but one thing I am finding a real pain in the ass in sailing the boat. It take a LONG time to get between the islands you need to go to. Granted, there are a LOT of islands (I think every square on the map had at least one small island, with something on it) so by sailing around you get to see them all, but then I get sidetracked too much and end up wasting two hours having not really done anything. I think there might eventually be a teleport spell, because it’s hinted at a little bit, but I just wish I had it already.
I got it Wednesday, and have been playing it almost non-stop since. Cripes, this is a good game. I love the graphics: they’re deceptively simple looking, but the artists do a lot with them that gives the game a lot of over-all graphic depth. Literally: you can see for miles and miles out on the ocean.
What I really like is that the game isn’t just cartoony, in many ways it works like a cartoon. Creeping around behind the pig-guards hidden underneath a barrell, for example, plays out just like a Warner Bros. cartoon. There was one bit where I was looking down a corridor, and at the far end a rat scurries by, holding a lit bomb. It was a perfect, unscripted moment that had me laughing out loud.
I disagree with adding voice acting. I don’t think it would have added a whole lot to the game, and could have ruined it if done poorly. I prefer subtitles that I can key through because I can read a lot faster than I can listen. Plus, since the subtitles stay on the screen until you press the A button, you can’t miss the graphics because you’re reading the text.
Plus, the little pseudo-speech noises are kinda cute.
Thats not true. For example, when you are in the Forsaken Fortress, every time you step out on a balcony after coming thru a door it will pan around the level and show you this and that. Not just the first time. Everytime. Same thing happenes when you walk in that room with those 2 patroling pig guys. It pans around the room for a few seconds everytime you enter the room.
This I think you can count on. There’s been some sort of teleport in every Zelda game since the original.
I was speaking generally. Beyond the 1st area of the game, the repeat cutscenes cease. And that panning you describe is only activated when you reach a certain part, it certainly isn’t loading.
The only real repeating cutscene that gets annoying to me is the one of the grapple rope wrapping around the pole you grab on to. I know it’s different almost every time, but they really shouldn’t have had a little cutscene every time you grapple.
I just gotta say again that this game is getting more fun the further in I get. I just got the bow and arrows and it’s getting better and better.
I’d say the first mini-dungeon, the Forsaken Fortress, was BY FAR the worst part of the game. They shouldn’t have put that in there.
The thing that pissed moff about the Forsaken Fortress is the whole losing your sword thing. I hate when games do that, but I can’t fathom why they felt the need to do it right after you get it in this game.
I know. It’s the only time they do it in the game. If the whole thing came in the middle of the game and lasted for only 15 minutes or so, it’d be cute and fun.
Instead, they start the game with it and it lasted(for me) over a half-hour of frustration.
Fortunately, I’m about to re-enter the Forsaken Fortress again to save my sister for real, and this time I keep the Master Sword with me!
Should be a lot of fun.
