Happy birthday Haze!!!
Just taking a short break from training the new guy, then back to work…
Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone.
I think I’m going to celebrate by doing some housecleaning.
ETA: I just got my tax refund this morning - Thank you, Uncle Sam, for that lovely birthday present.
{{{Hippo Birdy Hugz for Haze!!}}}
Okay, anybody who didn’t catch the Colbert Report last night–you HAVE to catch it, I’m serious! He had Clinton, John Edwards AND Obama on and it rocked de casbah. If you don’t watch it I’m-a gonna hunt you down and soak you with chicken soup, this time with rice in it! It’s on iTunes and Comedy Central replays it several times a day, you have no excuse.
I slept like a baby (well, a Not Gnat baby anyway!) last night (it’s been driving me crazy because the owwie side of my face is the side I sleep on by preference) and today I’m feeling pretty darned good. No pain to speak of, hardly any swelling and my tummy is managing the antibiotics just fine so far. Thanks, DoRe, and did you check under the couch cushions? Sometimes my posts end up there, when the cats don’t drag them away…
taxi, tell me how you like the curry–I think the next time I make it I’m going to put in more hot stuff because I like it like that, the ginger hot is good and clears my sinuses but I like the capsaicin hot too.
MBG, that guy was an a-hole for insulting the kids but I’m totally on board about those retards who speed through school zones. I want to install those “severe tire damage” spikes both in school zones (triggered by radar showing excessive speed) and at stop lights (triggered by the light turning red) because I figure having to have the car towed in and replacing 2 or more tires would prove an infinitely better deterrent than any ticket. Besides, it would give us all a chance to stand around and PALATR, which is always a bonus.
FCM, I hope your plans for hooky day include sweeping up all that confetti–even a birthday is no excuse for leaving a mess, missy!
LiLi, my mom always had great success at rocking us to sleep–with real rocks! Worth a try… Seriously, though, hugs to you because it’s nerve wracking when they cry and the uncertainty of wondering if you’re doing the right thing is just icing on the cake. They tend to turn out okay regardless, though, and it’s pretty hard at this stage to do much that will have serious repercussions, so don’t sweat it too hard.
Hugs and brickbats as needed to all, and HAPPY FIRDAY!!!
You’re not the boss of me!!!

Trash and recycling done been done. I think I’m going to wash my van and my car. My green Aerostar is yellowish - stoopit pollen! So I’ll don shorts and flippy-flops and commence to vehicle-cleanin’. Fresh air, exercise, clean vehicles - what more could one ask?!?
Poor Taz wants out soooooooo bad. He sits in the window and yowls when we’re outside. I think after the wedding and stuff, I’m going to get him a small harness and try walking him around the yard. I should probably put some flea stuff on him now to get the repellent built up before he goes out.
I should also have something lunch-like before I start my next chore. Can’t have me fainting away from hunger now, can we??
Happy [del]Fir[/del]Birthday, Haze!
What is it with earthquakes happening at 4:30-something in the a.m.? That’s when Northridge hit, 4:31 a.m. snowbunny and I well remember it, since we were about 10 miles from the epicenter; talk about a wild ride! Anyway, it was the only time in recent memory that the Milky Way could be seen from Los Angeles, so there’s always some good to come out of earthquakes, right?
Sorry about Nat’s being so difficult to put to bed, LiLi. I had to struggle to get Young Tiger to stay asleep for more than 3 hours when he was 9 months old; he was just a little piglet, would wake up and want to eat. Since the kids’ dad was spending a year overseas at that point courtesy of the Air Force from the time YT was 2 months old, I was doing it solo, and I remember finally just losing it one night and letting him cry it out. It took him nearly an hour. But after that there were about three nights of waking up, crying for 3 minutes, and then right back to sleep, and then nothing; he started sleeping like the slug he truly became when he became a teenager. Man, can teenagers sleep! Anyway, good luck. All I can advocate is patience; he’s too young for the Supernanny’s amazing techniques. But truly, it’s better to get him sleeping in his own bed now than later; if you think he’s stubborn now, just imagine how stubborn he’ll be when he hits the Terrible Twos!
Rigs planted scabby chins in her yard?

Papa Tigs is off today, so he took the Idiots to the dog beach first thing this morning. They are now sacked out like two dead lumps. Apparently there was a Brittany spaniel that ran Rusty up and down and up and down and up and down the beach until even Rusty collapsed in the sand and said, “I’ve had enough of THAT, thank you!” Hee! But tired dogs are happy dogs.
Back to the salt mines; I have got to get this really, REALLY late job done today, no matter what! I got a huge chunk done on it last night, which is why I wasn’t online at all; I was actually <gasp> being a good girl and working! Now I just need to think of more honeydos for Papa Tigs to keep him busy all weekend and out of my hair so I can get the rest of this work backlog caught up. It’s not that he tries to get underfoot, he just succeeds, y’know?
For some illogical reason, it’s just nicer when a few nice things happen together, isn’t it?
I’m chillin’ right now – tomorrow is going to be Cooking Day From Hell; we’re hosting the Seder this year, to the tune of 15 people. I’ll need to borrow chairs!
At least every guest has clear instructions which part of the food they are to bring with them!

**MBG **-- I dunno about you, but in my book an employee mouthing off like that about their peers, in public, should be grounds for termination  What a maroon!
Oh, and since I’ll be busy tomorrow, and may not be online much, I’ll wish a very happy passover to all out resident Jews, Half-Jews, and Jews-of-honor (IOW, if you even know what a Seder is, you’re probably covered by the above!)
Speaking of Jews – anybody seen **Ivory **lately?
Zer dirty Jew haz not posted in this week’s MMP.
But haz posted more or vles ten times or more in the past four week’s MMP.
[/borat]
Okay, apologies for trying to imitate a bad character, but Soapy has been active, so he’s here. I understand wanting to sometimes wanting to take a week off. These threads tend to be exhausting.
He’ll come back, they always come back.
Evening all. Long day
Happy Birthday Haze!
LiLi, I don’t know what to tell you about getting Nat to sleep. Touch wood, HRH has always been a good sleeper. Those nights when she has been awake or antsy, I have tried a cross between cry-it-out and going into the room but not picking her up and not talking to her. I wait 5 minutes, then go in, sit beside her cot, stroke her head and hold her hand until she calms down, then I sit next to her without looking at her, then after a few minutes I move back a few paces (about 2-3 feet), and keep gradually moving back until I can quietly leave the room. If she starts crying again, I wait 10 minutes, then repeat. It’s really tough listening to a littlie cry, particularly when they are too young to grasp the concept of object permanence.
I should add that, before you try anything, you first check his diaper and his temperature! HRH had a bit of a tummy bug last week and got herself so worked up while I was waiting out my 5 minutes that she vomited all over herself and the cot! :smack:
[non sequitur]
I made my very yummy Creamy Chicken Enchiladas for lunch today - 'twas truly tasty. Hubby ate 2 serves all by himself, washed down with a stinky “salad” of thin-sliced red onions and finely chopped Thai chillis. He’s crazy for hot stuff!
Okay, off to clean the durn kitchen. Have a nice Firday folks!
Now go pet your kitty.
That made me LOL. ![]()
I think I may have almost accidentally killed my housemate today. I came home from school and made a big old double batch of rice and beans - I’ve been hungry for it since Monday, but I haven’t had time to cook before today. I warned him it was going to be hotter than it was last time I made it. He watched me put the habaneros in. And he had a bowl of it anyway. I do feel kind of bad, though. I really shouldn’t tempt him with it. Next time I’ll make two pots, one sans heat just for him. And one with habeneros and extra Sriracha hot chili sauce for me.
Habenero is not in the Firefox spell check dictionary. That really bothers me for some reason.
HAH! ppr does stand for pepper!
Ima call you Pepper from now on. Oh and roommate knew the habaneros were in there, so if he dies from heat it’s his fault. I’da wolfed down two bowls at least before breathing. It sounds nummy!
It’s warm and sunny and almost three p.m. at da cave. I say it’s beerverage time!
Van is clean. **FCD ** is home and I just make him 2 cheeseburgers. In a few minutes, I’m going out to wash my Scion. I may even be nice and wash FCD’s car. Depends on how tired I feel.
I’m definitely glad I took the day off. I’m worth it, dammit!
Well, I feel bad because he’s had gastric bypass surgery, so it really messes his stomach up. Still, he knew what he was getting into and all. And thanks, it was nummy - it’ll be even nummier tomorrow. Rice & beans, like chili, always tastes better on the second day. And I’ve got enough to last me the rest of the week. Nom nom nom nom nom.
BEST WISHES TO OUR FAVORITE BIRFDAY GIRL!!!
Good luck on the sleep thing with Gnat, li-li. I had to hide in the utility room so I couldn’t hear The Princess[sup]TM[/sup].
Sunshine and warming temps are promising a fine weekend. I don’t think the pool will be warm enough just yet, though. Maybe next weekend.
Tonight will be Babyback Ribs from Bubbalou’s (where fcm and I had lunch.) I haven’t eaten pork, well, since then so I’m curious to see how they go down. I’ve pretty much taken pork off the home menu since there’s so much salt in the fresh pork at the market…not good for Mr. Anachi. I’ll let you know how the experiment turns out.
Tupug
That’s because it’s habañero. (Spaz, the roaming Character Map, strikes again!) A friend of mine makes salsa with 100 of those devils in it. I tried it once. Only swift medical intervention kept me living.
I just added up my hours for Archive Work and I can take Monday off!
beebs, sorry to tell you, but** Soapy’s ** a SHE.
Has anyone here ever made Ho-Ho Cake? I’m rather unimpressed with the icing and wondering if anyone else has a better recipe.
Speaking of recipes… Let me mosey on over to the recipe files and find a few for the blog. Back in a flash!
I would love to have that recipe. Although with 100 of those suckers, it sounds like a pretty big batch.
Whew! All three vehicles washed and parked where they belong (cars in the garage, van beside the garage. All three critters fed or feeding - Scruffy doesn’t inhale her food like Bernie does. FCD is showering (I’ll pause here if you want to imagine him all suds’d up) and I’m just taking it easy because, dang, this manual labor kicks yer butt when yer usual day is spent sitting in cubicleland.
Meatballs will not get done today - maybe Sunday - it’s supposed to cool down and rain. I may try to move a few azaleas tomorrow. But for the rest of today, I’m done. Shower later, but that’ll be the extent of my activity, beyond fingers dancing on the keyboard.
Other things better the day after they’re made: meatloaf, stuffed cabbage, sketty sauce, baked beans. What did I miss?
Ok, then, the recipe book is MIA. However, I just made some potato salad yesterday and it was pretty good. I never use a recipe for it, but I’ll give you my approximations.
Baked Potato Salad
(Dieters Need Not Apply)
5 medium sized potatoes, baked, cooled, and cubed
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups bacon bits
1 cup butter, melted
1/4 chives
3 cups mayonnaise
4 cups sour cream
1/2 tsp Kosher salt
1/4 tsp pepper
Place potatoes in a large bowl. Pour melted butter over potatoes, season with salt and pepper. Add chives, cheese, and bacon. (I add everything in this order so the butter doesn’t hit the cold sour cream and mayo and begin to harden. Add mayo and sour cream last and combine thoroughly with your hands. Do not overmix. Makes about 1 gallon of potato salad so enjoy or share with your friends.
