Letterkenny (Canadian TV show)

My friend turned me on to this show via random YouTube clips and I’m hooked! Being an American, the show’s only available to me via nefarious means so we won’t talk about that. I just love character-driven shows with a lot of randomness and a bit of surrealness. This one leans heavy on the catch phrases and to be honest I think you really have to watch it closely or it’s hard to keep up. Even though on the surface it seems like a really simple show.

I think it’s got the quick pacing of Corner Gas, the crazy characters of Trailer Park Boys and the chill & surrealness of the British show Ideal, without the drugs.

It’s only available on Crave, which is like Canada’s Netflix. If anyone outside of Canada wants to check it out, you’ll have to scour YouTube. I don’t think there’s many full episodes on there to be honest - but there are a lot of official clips from the show.

Anyone else into this?

It’s awesome eh. They’re currently touring a live show.

That’s a Texas size 10-4 , Buddy.

I watched the first few episodes, but the dialogue was a little too…mannered? stilted? twee?..for my tastes. Like Diablo Cody’s “Juno”, except a whole TV series instead of a 96 minute film. I thought it was mildly amusing, but not worth the effort to sit through.

Maybe it improves in later episodes, though.

Yeah you definitely have to find and appreciate the flow of the dialogue. I liken it more even to Kevin-Smith-style sometimes, and there is a point for everyone where that style is “too much.” I suspect your point is much earlier than mine

I don’t think it gets better as the show goes on. It’s more like…if you enjoy it, you’ll enjoy it more as you get to see it more. If not, it only gets worse for you!

I did appreciate hearing the term “skids” again, though. Although in my day skids listened to Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, not whatever goth stuff they’re doing in Letterkenny.

Letterkenny seasons 1 and 2 will be on Hulu starting July 13!

New Letterkenny season to air (On Crave only, I assume) June 29!

Letterkenny’s “Squirrely Dan” is played by K. Trevor Wilson, with whom I have done comedy shows.

For your own good, go to YouTube, and search for his name and watch the Easter Story. You will be very glad you did.

Bumping this back to the front page due to Hulu showings and another thread.

Yeah, it’s a hoot and a half.

So much great stuff … and then some duds. The whole hockey guy thing just dies. It was great in the first episode when they were getting played by Wayne and Daryl. But on their own it’s just flat out stupid. It’s like if they made Jim Dickson a major character and devoted 10 minutes of each episode to his auctioneer thing.

How on Earth can Gae demolish Tanis???

Michelle Mylett is great. She can really express herself just with her eyes.

And that’s what I likes about her.

Is that REALLY what you like about her?

Just want to bump this thread - Seasons 1 through 6 (the current season, which just dropped on Christmas day) are now on Hulu.

Wait, there’s a season 6? Yippee!

I’ve started rewatching the show but at a slower pace. Just watched the episode from season 2 where Katy is sort of going out with Stewart and Riley and Jonesy show up at the farm.

Wayne and Dary throw back the lines the hockey players threw at Wayne from the start of the first episode. Works amazingly well.

Somebody’s got to do a mix video of the chirping between Betty-Anne and Mary-Anne.

I miss Devon.

Yay! Thank you Zipper JJ.

Wonder what took them so long? Probably haggling over license agreements I’d imagine.

Just discovered this. Love it! Binged all six seasons (Do I understand right that 11 seasons are planned?) There is also supposed to be a short (Letterkenny Problems) that I haven’t seen.

The Hockey Players quickly got annoying in the early seasons, but I liked them better later on. Loved the Skids, especially Stewart. Could do without the Christians because I don’t find any of them, especially Glen, funny. The Hicks are always solid for a laugh.

I definitely recommend it, but it’s not for everyone.

Yeah, Hulu picked up four more seasons.

Can’t wait.

Yay!

Letterkenny Problems is the original YouTube series that the guy who plays Wayne did with his buddy. The shorts feature just the Wayne and Dary characters doing quips about hick life. That was the impetus for the Letterkenny show.

So, it’s not the same full cast and it’s not fleshed out like the show but it’s still got the same writer and actor and feels the same. Check 'em out!

How in the heck have I never heard of this show until reading this thread today? Watched the first four episodes of Season 1 and I’m absolutely in stitches. I love the quirky, fast-paced, stylized dialogue.

Thanks!

I too, had never heard if it until reading this thread today: have pretty good excuses, I feel, in that I’m not in North America; and am largely oblivious to anything “telly-related”, anywhere. My eye was caught by “Letterkenny” in the thread heading; which I’d known hitherto, only as one of the more prominent towns in County Donegal in the Irish Republic – of note to me, for its connection with a particular interest of mine.

The show sounds rather engaging, though I doubt whether I’ll ever watch it. I’m wondering whether the people of Quebec enjoy it too? Would like to think that maybe they did – relishing strange goings-on by the bonkers Anglophones…
