Wish I knew, I just made the connection to the name. My brother’s the English major.
However, I did find this description of the novel:
Flashback, eh?

Or maybe the next Hitler, or a serial killer or something.
Has anyone else noticed how often Locke seems to just be standing around in the background, watching while excitement happens? He makes me think of a researcher hiding in the bushes taking notes about a family of chimps.
Well, it’s pretty safe to assume he had a run in with the beast. When he came back from it, he started waxing wise about the island. I can’t wait to find out where that’s going.
Being a dark tower geek, all I could think when the pens didn’t work was “That’s ka, girlie. Take the baby and run.”
Personally, I think they should’ve given us two episodes tonight since we didn’t get an episode last week.
The Ethan Frome reference would make sense if Ethan were Danielle’s husband/lover. She’d be a bit older than him, and she seems pretty off her rocker. He might see Claire as his Mattie… though I hope this “love triangle” doesn’t end the way that one did.
But who does the pickle dish represent?
I’ll provide a quick link to a page I found on the major themes in Ethan Frome.
The section on Determinism/Naturalism seems relevant to me.
Anyway, I’m going to bed now. If I wake up screaming with my fingernails dug into the palms of my hands, I’ll let you know.
So…Hurley is really Hugo Reyes…hmmm
Reyes means something like: kingly or one who lives in the kings house.
Isn’t there a philosopher named Victor Hugo?
Or maybe it’s just because Hurley/Hugo is ‘huge’…nahhh
I really think, as discussed in previous threads, that the names (especially surnames) are some sort of clue or in-joke the writers threw in.
Okay, I googled and V. Hugo was known to wax philosophic but (as probably all the rest of you knew already) he was mainly known as an author of novels and poetry.
My search did turn up a lot of European Philosophers with Hugo as a first name that I’d never heard of though.
In Lost time it has only been a couple of weeks. They have been eating quite well too. Trust me, Hurley will be large for quite awhile. I do agree about the neat and clean stuff though. Guess they must have a laundry detail. lol. Or better yet, a dry cleaner.
Here’s my guess on the significance of “Ethan Rom” - it’s an anagram of “Other Man”.
You’re brilliant.
Not that it matters, but there is, in fact, a not-huge-but-still-significant Franco-Ontarian population, especially in the Northeastern area.
Back on topic, we were riveted. I had a suspicion Claire’s labour was Braxton-Hicks, but other than that, it was all a surprise to me, especially the “Ethan” guy. I watched the first half-hour and then the wife came home, so I turned the tv off and left it to tape, since she likes to watch them all in one piece, unspoiled. Upon watching the first half-hour a second time (but without knowing the end), I thought something was off about “Ethan”'s convo with Hurley, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Did anyone else get this feeling?
Or “More Than”…
Yes!!this was my thought too! "Raised by ‘an Other’ It’s gotta be there somewhere!
I found it funny when Ethan introduced himself as Canadian, because when I first saw him I thought of Mark McKinney from Kids in the Hall.
Come on, people, let’s play the speculation game! Why in the world would anyone want to kidnap Claire and Charlie? You’d think that if the psychic wanted the kid to be raised by her, and he sent her on the ill-fated plane in order to make sure she wouldn’t give it up for adoption, then he knew there wouldn’t be danger for her on this island. Can we take that to mean that Claire and her baby will be ok? Or is this kidnapping and the other disastrous events to follow the “blurry” thing he saw the first time?
And what’s the significance of Locke reading Tarot cards in her dream? And the plane mobile was spinning backwards…
This show is so intense! Everything here is something!
Maybe Charlie and Claire have been selected to be the new “Adam and Eve.”
Notice how, in Claire’s first dream, one of Locke’s eyes was black, the other white? Like the two stones that Jack found?
I’m thinking “they” want to use the baby to continue whatever fucked-up experiments they were doing…or maybe they just like baaaaby brrrraaaainssss!!!
I had a feeling that Ethan Rom was an anagram, but I’m glad someone had the wherewithal to figure out what it was. Good one! So the Ethan Frome reference might be irrelevant, but it’s got some points of interest.
There’s also an interesting section in there about isolation. Ethan Frome feels both physically and emotionally isolated, alone in his sensitivity to the beauty of nature and interest in science. With Mattie, he feels a fresh mind has entered his life, someone who can enjoy these things with him, but of course, they end up even more isolated than they were when the novel started. This fits rather well with Ethan’s situation, I think.
BRILLIANT!
I think I’ll have a beer now.
Or “Moth Near”, he knows about Charlie.
After he answered ‘Ontario’ I just kept wondering why he didn’t say ‘Ontario, Canada’, because there is an Ontario, California.
Looks like I was wrong about Jack, too. He had a girlfriend, so looks like he’s most likely a hetero. It just lowers my opinion of him.
