Lost 1.11: "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues"

I don’t think Locke is evil or even bad. I think he represents the Islands interest in htis whole thing if anything. He was responsible for Jack and Charlies “growth” thus far and seems to be guiding the characters more than anything. I think that he can see some things, but the actions of the others are beyond him.

As far as the two trails, I like the theory posted in this thread. I’d look through and find out who, but I haven’t had my morning cup yet. The thought was that Locke was going to where Claire was and that Jack was following Ethan and Charlie. Charlie kept dropping letters off his fingers because he didn’t know that Claire split off.

The french woman might have been telling Sayid to watch the survivors for infiltrators from the others on the Island. The sickness might have just been in her mind.

If Claire was already underground in the metallic tunnels, that would explain it…

Holy shit. What an episode.

I agree. When I heard the rumors that a main character was going to bite the bullet this season, I assumed it would be Charlie because I figured DM didn’t want to commit to more than one year since he’s a “movie” actor. So after Jack quit trying to revive him, I thought that it was a pretty cool way to send him off.

And then I imagined a million LOTR fans howling in anguish.

I also wonder if having Charlie die for a few minutes fulfills the producers’ promise that a lead character would be killed in this season…

Re Ethan: We’re all assuming that he’s evil because he’s taken Claire. However, there’s a possibility that he’s a good guy and is not associated with the evil “others.” Perhaps Ethan wants to protect Claire and the baby from the Others and that’s why he took off with her?

He even looks that way in the flashbacks to his life before surgery when he was raising his 4 brothers and sisters.

I think it’s in Matthew Fox’s contracts or something.

I hear it’s a pretty common practice for people from the US to claim they’re from Canada when they’re visiting less-than-US-friendly countries

Then why beat the crap out of Jack for following them, and why “kill” Charlie? Seems pretty extreme just to protect Claire.

Also, I’m not a doctor or EMT, but when you beat on a guy’s chest like that, doesn’t it tend to break ribs?

Does Ghostbusters qualify as “great literature?”

I think in that case, Hive Guy is the Keymaster and Kate is the Gatekeeper.

Because he didn’t want everyone leading the Others to the place he was taking her. Notice he didn’t kill Jack, when he had the chance.

There’s also a chance that Jack dreamt the attack.

You’re assuming Ethan was the one who hanged Charlie.

True, but Australia isn’t one of those countries.

By the way, leaving someone hanging from a tree may be very dramatic, but it’s not the most certain way of killing someone. After all, Jack was able to revive Charlie. If whoever it was had wanted him permanently dead, why not manual strangulation, stabbing, crushing his skull, etc?

(I’m pretty sure it was writer’s expedience–they needed for Charlie to not actually die, while making it look like someone had really tried to kill him.)

I’m just saying claiming “I’m from Canada” is a common practice to explain why you *sound * like an American but *aren’t * one.

It is when you have a price on your head.

Ethan had been living with these people. I think he knew enough about them to know that leaving Charlie “mostly dead” would delay Jack because of his need to save people. He probably hung Charlie in such a way that he would take a little longer die to give Jack enough time to find him. I don’t think he cared one way or the other if Jack was able to revive Charlie. I suppose it is possible that Ethan and the others intentions toward Claire aren’t “evil”. As suggested maybe they are trying to insure that only she raises her baby. However, I don’t think they care one way or the other about what happens to whomever gets in the way, like Charlie, so that doesn’t make them altogether good either.
Re: Kate being American or Canadian. Isn’t it possible that her dad was in the American military but her mother was Canadian and she spent time with both and went to college in Canada? I just don’t think that’s an important detail to get all hung up about.
I am a bit upset about this week. My tape ran out in the middle and I had to grab a random tape with no idea what was on it so I missed a bit while I was hunting a new tape and I can’t even review what I missed. Also, I am afraid to check the rest of the tape I taped over in case it was something I really wanted. I wonder how long it will take them to put Season 1 of Lost out on DVD?

Probably not long. But you should be able to see a repeat sometime soon. Next Wed they’re showing the 2-hr pilot. They used to show repeats every other Saturday, but that seems to have stopped. My guess is that there is going to be a break in new episodes either this month or next, and we’ll see all the episodes as repeats at that time.

With commentary by the TCM!
Roar. This is where I ate someone.

Rawr. This is where Locke and I play backgammon. He still owes me two dollars.

Roar, rawry hiss, Roar groan. I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!

Damn, now I’m all excited and impatient for it.

I forgot to add a couple more comments.

Re: Charlie’s bandages. I am in the group who made LOTR comments, I said to my boyfriend “not idly do the bandages of Lorien fall.”

And when Jack started mouth to mouth on Charlie I said “that’s going to make some slash fans very happy”.

I was also very grateful that I had spoiled myself (saw pics of this episode and knew he would be in it later) and knew that Charlie would not die because my boyfriend kept saying “looks like they decided to kill the hobbit”. I said “No, he’s not dead. Jack’s going to start pounding on his chest again any second now.” and sure enough he did. If I had not know he didn’t die I might have been very upset.

Re: Jack’s CPR. I know this is all done for dramatic effect but when I took CPR courses I was taught that the precordial thump (the pounding on the chest) should only be done a couple time and only at the beginning of CPR. The actual compressions and mouth to mouth would have been more effective but he stopped those in favor of beating the crap out of Charlie. It would have been nice to see more realistic CPR for a change. I bet if it had been Kate he’d have been giving more mouth to mouth. So even though I am not a slash fan I really would have preferred to see Jack giving Charlie a little more lip lock.

WAG: The island is really a metallic, artificial lifeform and the TCM is really just the island terraforming itself to deal with the new lifeforms!

That’s right. I said it.

watsonwil-----> :wally

Huh. No one has taken up my earlier Abyss reference. Is the movie that old?

I got the Abyss reference, or at least, “similarity” too. What else can I say about it, besides resurrection being completely improbable in both cases?

I figured the reason Charlie wasn’t talking was because he had a half dozen broken ribs and wanted to avoid breathing as much as possible.

I figured Charlie’d survive because he’s as close to a “name” as they have on this show. Quick–name the actor who plays Boone. Hah! Knew you couldn’t. What else has he been in? But DM has only about as much of a “movie career” as the other Hobbits. I mean, has Sean Astin’s latest project been released to theaters or did it go straight to video?

I don’t know anything about movie makeup. Is the modern stuff more transparent than the old greasepaint or does some poor schlub have to paint on each of Kate’s freckles? I’d be willing to do it as long as there was somebody ready to perform CPR on me everytime she scrunched up her nose in that melting manner of hers.

My daughters made the same D&D connection when Hurley called himself a warrior. I saw him with a haircut and a suit on another show and he STILL screamed GEEK! In the nicest sense of the word, of course.

Jack as the Good Shepherd is still the angle that really interests me

Some parallels I see:

[ul]
[li]Power over life and death (obvious)[/li][li]Followed in his father’s footsteps (weak, I know.)[/li][li]Leads his followers to a “better place” (caves vs beach)[/li][li]Left the 99 behind to find the one (Claire)[/li][li]Spent time in the wilderness (even had a precipice!)[/li][li]Has that one disciple that LOVES him (Kate = St. John?)[/li][li]Self sacrificing[/li][/ul]
He was even seperated from the others at the beginning and had to go down to where everyone else was in trouble. (1st ep)

Any others? Obvious or obscure?
