Lost 1.14: "Special"

I think there’s a hint that the writers might take her in another direction. She’s always been able to coast on looks (I don’t think her looks are special at all, Claire is much much better looking) and her parent’s money. No one’s ever espected her to be anything but a flaky (flakey?) blond valley girl. Maybe she’ll get a chance to rise to the occasion. I’d like to see that, just becuase I enjoy when writers of tv are not lazy with their stereotypes.

Ok, I watched it a third time. The situation you describe is true for the first throw, the one that misses. When Walt throws again and hits, Boone is right there. Now I guess the distance could be distorted, but the angle isn’t.

                                                        Walt

                           Boone Tree Camera

You can tell because using the tree as the focus, the knife and Boone’s location form a 90 degree angle. In the situation you described, it would have been more of a 60 degree or so.

Shoot, it took out my spaces.

Ok, they were standing like this.m Ignore the x’s.+
x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x [Walt]

x x x x x x [Boone] x x x x x x [Tree] x x x xx x x x [Camera]

Was the woman who played Walt’s Mother the same woman who was on Angel as the ‘evil’ woman who everone thought was good for a bit?

Nope. You’re thinking of Gina Torres and confusing her with Tamara Taylor. It’s interesting, though, that they will both be in Serenity. Makes me think that Fury or Goddard had a hand in it, somehow.

Forgive me for bumping this after a week or two, but I just finished watching the first 14 episodes and reading this thread. I’m all caught up now.

I noticed that no one mentioned Locke’s gift of a mechanical pencil to Michael. I think that’s worth bringing up. Did Locke somehow know of or guess at Mike’s artistic leanings?

Also, I’m sure this has been discussed in previous threads I haven’t got to yet, but what’s the current thinking on the black/white symbolism? Is it merely foreshadowing the upcoming schism? I noticed the following elements:
The “dark and light” backgammon pieces
The black and white stones Jack took out of the pocket of one of the bodies in the caves
Locke’s eyes in Claire’s dream - one was white, the other was black
And of course the infamous Black Rock
Did I miss any?
Personally, I suspect it’s a hint that the island brings out the worst in some people and the best in others.

One thing is for sure, don’t fly Oceanic. *Executive Decision * was on yesterday and the terrorists captured an Oceanic flight. that company should be bankrupt by now.

Whoa! Here I thought it was Rachel Crawford. I never realized how much she and Tamara Taylor look alike!

A couple of other things that came to me during the night (cue ominous music).

So Crazy French Woman was working out the position of…something - possibly the Black Rock, possibly not - and covered her papers with the lyrics to “Somewhere Beyond the Sea.” Perhaps an upcoming twist is that there’s more to the story than just the island. Perhaps the raft will come in handy after all.

And speaking of working out positions of things, they should be able to fix their own position relatively easily, it seems to me. Latitude is north/south and longitude is east/west, right? So to get the latitude, they just have to measure the angle of the sun at local noon. That, combined with the date, should enable them to figure it out. Sayid should be able to improvise a crude sextant. And as for the longitude, well, there are tons of watches around, at least some of which should still be working and set to some known time - either Sydney time or LA time. You can figure out longitude by seeing what time it is in Sydney at local noon. And you’d think there would be charts of the area in the cockpit, so they could get a rough idea of where they are and what’s around them.

Incidentally, anyone think that the strange behavior of the magnetic field around the island may have contributed to the plane crash in the first place?

Well, no one has gotten to it yet, so I guess I’ll start this one.

I’m getting tired of these 2 week breaks. I haven’t been this into a drama since Babylon 5, I don’t think. I sure hope that the whole basis of the show doesn’t turn out to be corny, and make me feel cheated, having all this anticipation.
