A zombie clone! A zombie clone!
Yeah, me too!
So, there were five guns and five gunners: Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Lock and Sayid.
So which one did Charlie snatch a 9 from? I didn’t see them show it, and no one said it either.
I don’t think he snatched it from anyone. When Jack first tackled Ethan, his gun went flying - they did a quick shot of it on the ground. I don’t remember a shot of Jack picking it back up after he beat the crap out of Ethan, so it stands to reason that the gun Charlie used to shoot Ethan was Jack’s gun, and that he picked it up off the ground.
What’s with the confusion over Scott’s name? You’d think they’d know everyone’s lifestories after a month on the island, let alone whether that was Scott or Steve.
And as for the fifth gun, of course there was one. I don’t know why Sawyer had to explain where he got it. Isn’t that the one he used to shoot the polar bear?
And the reference to a paper company in Slough was cute.
Post #28. It was very specific forshadowing (in hind sight). We were shown the gun Jack dropped but never shown anyone picking it up. And then we here gun shots. At first, I thought it might have been Claire, but, again in hindsight, we were shown very heavy forshadowing that it would be Charlie. (For everyone that says “I knew it before it happened!”… I’m so very proud of you! )
This is basically where I’m at with this show. I think it’s a good series but I keep waiting for it to get better. I feel that the producers are trying to pretend more is happening than really is.
I feel this week’s flashback story was weak - for the first time, we didn’t learn any major new information about the subject of the backstory.
But I liked the main story. Good to see people getting off their bickering and working together.
I agree that Sun and Jin’s conversation seemed to have a deeper meaning than what they indicated. I also like Charlie’s “conversation” with Jin. He raised an interesting idea - how do the events going on around him appear to him? He must always be thinking, “why is this happening?” “why are they doing that?” “why are these two fighting?” “why does the fat guy act so weird around me?” “why are people disappearing and then reappearing?” “why did that guy attack me?” “why are we building all these fires?” “where did those people get guns and why are they going into the woods?” “what the hell is going on?”
Some highlights for me:
Barfing in the copier! Ah yes, I’m sure we’ve all had that urge.
Hurley saying: “Amen, I guess.” Man, that actor’s delivery is dead on. He’s Jorge Garcia, right?
If anyone deserved to have the snot pounded out of him, it’s Ethan.
The attention seems to be diverted away from the island these days and focused much more on the group. I still crave answers, though. Alex, Rousseau, polar bears, TCMs, the transmission, and more.
Second that request. My tape cut out just as Jack was tackling Ethan (typical). So Jack beats the snot out of Ethan, they’re preparing for interrogation, and Charlie shoots Ethan? I can’t wait for the TWoP synopsis, guys! I need to know now!
Could someone explain the joke?
The BBC series “The Office” is set in a paper company in Slough. I laughed at that as well.
That’s EXACTLY what I thought as I was watching it. Locke had a strange, slightly knowing look on his face as Jack revealed the guns. He was NOT surprised. There’s no way Claire escaped from Ethan, what with his strength and her pregnancy. Someone even pointed that out on screen. The only way she could have gotten away is if Ethan released her. I think “the island” (shorthand for whatever force is really running things) was done with Ethan and his group, and sacrificed him to get the guns out and in the hands of Locke. I think the island is primarily interested in stirring up trouble among the new group. Ethan, Claire, Charlie, Locke - all are of secondary importance except insofar as they can help promote the main goal.
I’ve been resisting the idea that Jin also speaks English, but after tonight, I find it more credible. I think at the very least, he suspects that his wife speaks English. He seemed to be testing her tonight - trying to get her to admit it.
And what was the deal with Boone suddenly jumping from night to day while on sentry duty? Are we supposed to assume he slept standing up all night long until the dog tripped the line? Personally, I suspect Ethan did some mojo on him (via the Ethan-island-Locke-Boone connection) to sneak past him and kill Scoteve.
What do you think the name of the dad’s band, Protestant Reformation means?
Broadly speaking, it refers to a larger institution broken up by internal stresses and beliefs into smaller groups with different aims. History lesson, irrelevant detail or foreshadowing?
The MEME for this episode, “Homecoming,” has two definitions:
- A coming to or returning home.
- An annual event at schools, colleges, and universities for visiting graduates.
I don’t see how #2 can apply here. The first definition has several possibilities when you consider that “home” might be considered a state of mind rather than a place, or perhaps, another plane of existence; and that not every journey undertaken need be a physical one.
With that in mind, there were five homecomings here: the physical return of the abducted Claire from her captor(s) and later, Walt’s dog, Vincent, both under perhaps suspicious circumstances. (Something tells me to watch that Shifty Eyed Dog)
The deaths of Ethan and Scott Jackson (who worked for an internet company in Santa Cruz) signify another homecoming; I’ve heard many a preacher eulogize how the dearly departed are “going home,” and this episode is notable for showing the first island burial* and grave marker** for its first murder victim, Scott. (Curious… what did they do with Ethan’s corpse?)
Ethan’s execution by Charlie signalled how the bass player from Driveshaft was the recipient of a different kind of homecoming, and I agree with NoClueBoy’s assessment that he has achieved a partial redemption by proving that he can take care of people he loves just fine, and absolved himself of the guilt he carried for his previous failures.
*the mass Memorial service in the burnt fuselage turned pyre wasn’t a burial, obviously.
**The dead from the plane crash were cremated. The drowning victim didn’t get a burial, presumably because her body was lost at sea. Jack’s father’s corpse has never been recovered. The two old remains in the cave were presumably moved before the castaways made it their shelter… but where? What happened to Kate’s marshall after Jack killed him after Sawyer’s botched euthanization was never revealed. Scott is the only castaway shown who has so far warranted both a grave and a private funeral service.
Boone falling asleep was just that. He fell asleep. Ethan came in from the water and attacked Steve (Dude. It was Scott) at the beach. Ethan then broke a bunch of bones on Scott to send a very angry message and make sure they knew he didn’t have an accident.
Yeah, it felt good to watch Jack pound the crap out of Ethan. Surprised that it went as easy as it did, but I guess Ethan had a long night and was caught off guard.
I’m thinking the Others might take a more active position now that they’re primary guy is dead.
I’m glad so many of you enjoyed this episode, but to me it was a real let down. They tease us with hints of new info (Look! Claire’s back and can tell us! Look! They captured Ethan!) and dire doings (One of the castaways won’t survive…who? who?)
And what do we get?
Claire has amnesia, fcol.
Ethan gets blown away before they can ask question one.
The character killed is so minor they have to joke about not even castaways being sure of his name.
Respectively: Lame. Weak. Anticlimactic.
I’m starting to get really strong ‘X Files’ vibes. Even it they really DO have a planned out background that Makes Sense Of It All, they’re going to dribble it out and throw in wild goose chases and blind alleys to stretch it out and out and out…until they manage to destroy any possibility of a reasonable wrap up.
I’ll keep watching, at least until the end of the season, but less and less does this series seem like something fresh and wonderful to me.
In “Whatever the Case May Be,” they revealed that Jack buried the Marshal - Jack and Kate had to then dig up the body in order to get the key in order to unlock the suitcase that contained the guns.
Smeghead - I’m with you on the Sun and Jin subtext. It really seemed to me that he was trying to get her to slip up, to say something she couldn’t have possibly known unless she could understand the others. I hope they do more with those two in later episodes; they’re way too interesting to be relegated to the background.
I definitely think Jin was testing Sun. I’m still undecided on whether Jin speaks English, but I’m leaning towards believing he does.
I am in complete agreement here. My level of frustration is beginning to exceed my level of enjoyment. Too many hints at mysteries, and too few advances towards answers to those mysteries.
If Ethan’s such a super-soldier, he seemed to be having trouble catching up to a very pregnant woman running over uneven ground. Then again, Claire is pretty nimble for someone in her condition.
Me four. There were a lot of lines to read between in that scene:
-
Maybe Jin understands English.
-
Maybe he suspects Sun understands English.
-
Maybe Sun is pregnant.
-
Sun is hot.
That last item, of course, is more than just speculation.
Has Sun shown any possible symptoms of morning sickness that we’ve seen?
Bah! It’s just typical television storytelling. Maybe it wouldn’t be so frustrating if we got the full season in one straight shot instead of 2 to 3 weeks of new then 2 to 3 weeks of repeats so they can save all the new shows for sweeps months. BUt that’s the way all TV shows run. Maybe it wouldn’t be so frustating if we didn’t have 10 minutes of commercials at every climactic point for every 10 minutes of shows. But that’s the way all TV shows run.
It’s primarily a character driven show. Flashbacks tell us more about the characters for a reason, if it were all about the island mysteries we wouldn’t be getting any character flashbacks. The primary reason so many of you feel that Charlie’s backstory was so weak is that it was only about his motivation behind wanting to take care of Claire and you don’t get that until the last scene. Also, with so much going on on the Island they couldn’t have too much going on in the flashback.
Other points:
Re: Ethan. Charlie was right, Ethan never would have talked then they would have had to deal with what to do with him later. They would have had to keep this man who can kill people with his bare hands potentially loose among them. They would have had to keep him tied and guarded by at least two people at all times. That would have just been more murders waiting to happen. There was also the potential of “Others” coming to rescue him.
I imagine they probably buried him in a shallow grave near where he was shot.
Re: Boone falling asleep. He was sitting down staring into the fire, not the best way to avoid falling asleep. But it is possible to fall asleep sitting up or even standing, I’ve done it. I’m glad that Ethan came in from the water so he didn’t have to have the guilt of Scott’s death on his hands making him overcompensate even more.
Re: Why the hell did the Marshall have 5 guns? Was he just anal (I need a backup gun for my backup gun) or is that SOP?
Re: Locke knowing about the guns and just wanting Jack to bring them out. I’ll buy that Locke suspected but I don’t think his motivation was to just get the guns for himself. He’s not stupid, he knew they didn’t have much chance against Ethan with just their pointy sticks.
Re: Jack beating the snot out of Ethan. At first I was finding this a little hard to believe considering how strong Ethan has been in the past but in the other cases he has always caught the castaways off guard and in this case they were ready for them and Jack wasn’t going to let him best him again. Still, I think they should have just shot him in the leg.
