Wonderful show - just sucks me in. I am curious about why Hugo Reyes goes by Hurley, but all in good time.
The “Bad Luck” aspect of these numbers seems to point to something magical/metaphysical about at least some of what is going on - I can’t really see mad scientist conducting Monster experiments leading to bad mojo with numbers…
I guess where I am at with this show is bittersweet - it has been great, everything I want in an action/adventure/mystery series. And yet, as I watch things get tied up in ever-more-interesting knots, I am resigned to the inevitable suspician that it will ONLY be about the thrill of the chase, not the kill. In other words, this part of the journey is perfect, but when it is time to reveal what’s behind some of the curtains, it will be ultimately unsatisfying. That has been true 99% of the time with series like this - X Files, Alias by the same creator, Buffy’s last couple of seasons, etc…
Don’t forget one of Hurley’s other past statements. “I’m something of a warrior at home.” I wonder if that is in any way related to his stay in the hospital.
I, for one, didn’t catch the box company connection. That’s why I love the SDMB so much.
Or that there would be a throw away line in a major backstory. The implication to me is that there is a relationship among the majors. Hidden and subtle for some, grossly obvious for others.
I hate that I’m too lazy to check the boards when the show is over. I wait for Thursday morning, and then anything I might have wanted to say is taken. And I sit at my desk and pout.
Ivylass–I’m sure someone on the island is keeping track of what day it is, right? Just because we didn’t see Claire ask doesn’t mean she’s wrong about the date. Then again, if I were trapped on an island, I’d probably pick myself a different birthday, anyway. Like Locke said, everyone gets a new life.
I imagine it’s very much like “crossing the streams.”
Regarding the mysterious Canadian sneaker company–do we know of any Canadians on the island? Ethan claimed to be from Ontario, and Kate told her Australian Farmer Guy that she was Canadian (unlikely, if her father was a Ranger, but just gathering all the facts) … is anybody aware of Canadian survivors?
Oh! And the numbers–the survivors now number 44, total. 48 survived the crash, then the marshal died, Joanna drowned, SteveScott (I forget which it was) got killed, and Ethan should never have been part of the count in the first place.
If I can wander briefly OT for a minute, I think threads like this are the reason I love the boards so much. No drama, all info and entertainment. All of us are watching the same show but many of us see something no one else has.
I guess I’m going to have to content myself wit rewatching the old episodes until we get a new one again. Did someone really say SIX WEEKS? Boooo.
There’s people trapped in that hatch and they found a way to transmit a distress signal from the island. They tranmitted those numbers so when someone arrived at the island to rescue them, they could locate that hatch number. Kind of like “hey, were trapped on Alcatraz Island, in cell number 1051!”
Are the people alive? Dead? Who knows? Maybe they are dead but sent out a cursed signal till someone finds them ala the dead girl in “The Ring”.
Maybe the islands a prison for some people with heavily psychic powers that were imprisoned there by the government. They’re using they’re psychic abilities to try to get rescued. Maybe they’re children ala “Akira”. Maybe they have a bond with Walt since he’s a child with psychic abilities. Maybe Claire’s baby is supposed to be some kind of psychic child prodigy that the children are waiting for?
A lot of boxes…
“You’ve opened the box!”
(Pandora’s box?)
Hurley ownes a box company in Tustin
Locke works for the box company
Locke? Box? Lockbox?
Is the metal object a box?
Yep, despite the jinx, Hurley’s own luck was always, in the end, good. I think that’s we saw Hurley being so confident during this episode. He might not be “spry” exactly, but he trusted his luck enough to try to avoid the swinging spikeball. He again trusted his luck that the bridge would support his weight. He had a gun pointed at him by a “crazy woman” but ended up connecting with her and getting a battery in the process. In fact, the only time Hurley seems to be unlucky with is when he goes up against Walt in backgammon. Hmmmm…
Which answers the question of what happens when lucks collide.
[WAG Tinfoil Hat On] Hampshire, I like it. I think you may be right, in a sense–the people who put the hatch there, though they may not have been trapped inside, broadcast those numbers … why?
So whoever sent them there (military, whatever) would know which “unit” they were, and maybe come get them.
Why the numbers are cursed … I’m still working on that.

Very close to my sentitments. I love this show, but I just can’t see how the diverse storylines are all gong to converge at some point in the future unless it’s some wildass supernatural explanation that no one could guess in a million years.
Okay a couple of things, I work for a Lottery company and on our website we have a number checker, (Here if you’re interested). I’m afraid since 1987, 3 of the 6 numbers came up in the same draw multiple times, and 4 of the 6 once. But 5 or more numbers have never hit. Does anyone else have links to any other Lottery number checkers?
Also I live in Canada, and CTV broadcasts “Lost” over my ABC feed (it’s called Sim-subbing and sucks donkey balls), but the episodes always end on time, then at 9:00 PM the signal switches back to my ABC feed and I get to see the last 3-4 minutes again.
Now I’m assuming CTV doesn’t cut out any of the episode, they just adjust the commercial breaks accordingly. Can anyone confirm this?
When I wrote that first line, it was right after the episode, and I hadn’t gone back to verify whether Locke was from Tustin (or somewhere else).
Now I have (see a later post, where I mentioned looking back at the “census conversation” between Locke and Hurley. Locke indeed says he was from Tustin, so that’s a pretty solid connection.
