Lost 2.1: "Man of Science, Man of Faith"

fusoya, check out the TV.Com listing for next week’s blurb–not real spoilers, just a TV-Guide-ish description.

My first thought when I saw Walt was that he is dead. He was too dripping wet for it to have been his true self, if he had walked that way from that water he would have been wet, but not with water streaming off him like that. Plus he appeared the same way Jack’s father did.

I guess he could be using his psychic powers to somehow get a vision to Shannon, but my first instinct is that he is gone. It would make sense that he is back on the island though, that the others took him back there after they captured him.

Good catch on the SUV driver being Shannon’s father, all! I knew it would come up again but I am sure that is the answer.

How the heck did someone build that hatch? Someone had to have gone to the island with the intention of staying there for a long time, and they must have come with a lot of cement!

Could it be that scientists are there to somehow research how to make this vaccine for mystery disease that they know will be released on the rest of the world? Will we find out at the end of the show that the survivors on the island are the only ones left in the world? Maybe instead of the island being cursed / doomed it is the rest of us.

I love this show!

That might explain why The Others wanted Walt. Poor kid, he’s being thrown into GenPop.

I made the mistake of drinking way too much wine watching the Season 1 Finale. I’ll have to rewatch this episode before SURVIVOR tonight.

4+8+15+16+23+42 = 108

I had the episode in HD Widescreen, no problem.

Yeah. He might as well have just said “see you on some weird island once you get that hatch open, brother”.

So given that two people recovered from spinal injuries, maybe there’s an experimental virus that helps regenerate neural tissue but has horrible side effects?

I also wondered about the Desmond=demon idea. Particularly after his “See you in another life” comment at the stadium. (How would “Desmond” be pronounced in French?)

Oh yeah, and we had an Alice-in-Wonderland-down-the-rabbit-hole moment with Kate.

The “means that won’t be mentioned here” shows are encoded from an HDTV source (which is shown in widescreen), then converted to the .avi format, keeping their aspect ratio intact. The regular, non-HDTV broadcast is in the standard 4:3 format.

At least, that’s my WAG based on absolutely no experience whatsoever. God’s truth.

Forgot part two of my post.

Did anyone notice if the inside of the hatch had a handle?

Not as far as I know.

So what happens if you hit the Execute button?

I had my 50" Sony ready to go to watch the recap episode then the season premiere. Meanwhile the big thunderstorms are approaching the twin cities.
At exactly 7:00 my power goes out. It’s black outside and the wind picks up and the trees are bending in the wind.
I grab the wife and dogs and head into the basement.
Lucky I have a battery operated 2" Casio TV. However the local ABC channel has news coverage of the storm. Over the next hour the storm barrels through my neighborhood (north-west suburbs) with 75-80mph winds knocking down tree after tree (uprooting most) into the streets, on to peoples cars, and onto their houses. I only lost one 12’ tree. The portable toilets at the park next to me got blown to the other end of the park. Peoples wood fences are trashed. News said a tornado touched down less than a mile from me.
But I did watch “Lost” from 8-9 on the Casio 2".
Power was restored at 5 a.m. this morning. City crews were out and about cutting trees that were in major streets.

My “Lost” storm

To be fair, in 16 years she’s probably been sick or exhausted at some point in there.

Of course, since “it” killed everyone else in her party, maybe Danielle got sick and managed to overcome the sickness while it killed everyone else…

But “batshit crazy” might cover it, too.

-Joe

Didn’t “it” infect everyone in her party, and she killed most of them? She at least killed Robert, right?

This is what I get for being too busy to re-watch all of last season.

Yes, but most television shows filmed in 16:9 are still being broadcast in 16:9 for the low definition signals, particularly shows like Lost which take advantage of widescreen for most of the shots. Even Conan O’Brien is being broadcast in widescreen everywhere now! Cropping a show like Lost for low def broadcasts is the same type of sin as cropping movies for VHS/TV.

I couldn’t even get through the opening scene in the hatch without being distracted by all the shots that looked zoomed and cut off. Since, as I mentioned in my first post, I didn’t watch the first season live, I was unaware of this.

Not that I’m encouraging or advocating this behavior, but it’s amazing how fast these other methods work…fans on the west coast could have seen the episode 45 minutes before it even aired there!

I would add:

Who needs to be quarantined, the guy or the island?
Who or what destroyed the ladder?
Where’s the back door to the bunker?
What’s Desmond doing on the computer?
Was there ever anyone else in the bunker with him? (he was in the top bunk of a bunk bed.)

Yeah, when Sayid and Danielle had their standoff, and Sayid attempts to shoot her, Danielle mentions that her husband Robert had not noticed it wouldn’t fire either, when she shot him. She then explains that she had killed the other survivors of her shipwreck because they had become infected by something.

I thought the episode was great, although it made me a little nervous about the writing that the guy in the hatch was only introduced in flashback this episode. I worry a bit that they’re just making it up as they go. But in any case, they’ve been pulling it off very well so far, regardless of how much of the story has been pre-plotted.

Having said that I thought the ep was excellent. The intro from inside the hatch was very nice (and not what I expected at all), Hurley had his usual great lines, and the flashback was nice, fleshing out little bits of what we already knew happened with Jack’s wife.

Also good catch on whoever picked up that the guy in the accident is Shannon’s father.

About what Walt said. . .

If you go to this website, you can listen to what he said played backwards. It does sound like he says

Press the button. No, button’s bad.

It seems like they played it backwards for the show so that losers like us would go and reverse it to find out what he’s really saying.

The majority of the credit should go to my friend, who shouted “Oh, God, that’s Locke!!” when they wheeled him in, which made me pay attention to the name.

Oh, and about the weird I Ching looking symbol in the hatch. When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a crude floorplan for a stadium. I know it isn’t, but it could tie in with the tour de stade encounter.
