Lost 2.12: "Fire + Water"

I’m with you on that. I’ve not seen any spoilers to that effect, so this is just my baseless surmising, but I’d bet my pants she was a patient in the hospital and has been faking the psychologist thing the whole time. She and Hurley were together in private - what harm would it have been to admit she knew him as a psychologist, or in some other capacity? Unless she was trying to cover up some lie?

Not to mention … Faking a psychologist would be perfect for a mental patient.

I think Charlie is right to be suspicious about Locke. He really is interested in Claire and is trying to take Charlie’s place. This would explain his apparent over-reactions to Charlie’s actions. We just aren’t used to seeing Locke in an emotional turmoil.

And just a suspicion but maybe Libby was a mental patient. She may have decided to tell everyone she was a psychiatrist when she got to the island and realized nobody knew her past.

Yup. I feel sorry for Chalie. He tries to be there for people when they need help, get’s used but no one is ever there for him when he really needs help. Look at the shit they put up from Sawyer and Sayid, but they’re still accepted.

Ummm… thanks, I think…

Dante: “Yeah, honey, there’s this other freak I know over on SDMB who said the same thing!”

Very interesting. I didn’t even think of that. And that would explain her odd behavior when Hurley said he remembered her, too.

Here’s a quote about the Libby spoiler from last August about Adrift 2.02…

"The episode also brings Libby (Cynthia Watros) on to the scene as a regular. Libby was supposed to be in her late forties to early fifties (although Watros will turn thirty-seven on Friday), easy on the eyes, amicably maladjusted, and a compulsive liar so good at what she does, most people will not know she isn’t what she seems. Libby may have been in the tail section of the plane, but will we ever really know?
"

Or she really is a psychologist who just happened to go off the deep end herself…

Not from this episode, but something that has been bugging me all season so far.

We have an island, a group of pirates, and maybe a separate colony of (former) kids. Someone was spotted carrying a teddy bear on a lanyard.

Maybe the Dharma initiative is an attempt to set up a real-life Neverland.

I’m going to get real worried if future episodes involve a previously known Indian tribe and mermaids living offshore.

Re: The fire. I don’t think it was set anywhere near trees. It seemed to just be brush. I thought he was doing something to the brush before setting it on fire, perhaps trying to clear some around the perimeter to keep it from spreading much. Yes, it was all kinds of stupid for Charlie to set the fire but I think he tried to keep it as safe as possible.

I am going to attempt to defend Charlie with a bit of amateur psychology. Does everyone remember how way back when the comments/criticisms were that he seemed to get over his addiction rather fast and that’s not very realistic? Well, from what I know about addiction is it isn’t that easy. In Charlie’s case I think he just continued to stew for a while, he was jonesing but for a while he didn’t have access to any other drugs so he had no choice. Then he found more drugs but he was essentially “clean” and he didn’t want to use again but he didn’t want to destroy the drugs “just in case”. How many ex-smokers still have cigarettes “just in case”? Knowing that it was the last possible drugs forever made it even harder to destroy them. But now he had the ability to use again so now the withdrawl and desire to use was more insistent than it was when he willingly destroyed the last of his stash before.

I think this is why he became a bit more of a jerk with everyone and transferred much of his obsession to Aaron and being responsible for him. He did help save Aaron and that does make some people feel a responsibility to continue to protect the person they saved. From what we know of Charlie’s past he was always the care-taker and all his family relationships have been co-dependent. He feels he has to save other people but he can’t save himself.

Another thing that Charlie never really dealt with was killing Ethan. Again, another extreme thing he did as a caretaker. He saw it as a way to protect Claire and her baby and the other Losties as well.

Charlie could have handled everything much better, yes, but Charlie was obviously not thinking like a calm rational person. When he realized what the dreams were trying to tell him he could have approached Claire more calmly, he could have explained it to Kate or anyone else and asked them to pass it along to Claire. He could have been less manic about it but remember Aaron was his new drug/obsession and he was being denied that. He was in withdrawl. So he was acting like a drug user even though he wasn’t really using the drugs. This is the type of behavior we expected to see before after he destroyed his initial stash.

I am also disappointed with the way everyone seemed to turn their backs on him. Charlie is not exactly the most useful person but he has always tried to help. As someone else commented, considering the things Sawyer, Sayid and Jin have done and how they seemed to have been forgiven, they could cut Charlie a little slack, too.

Charlie seems to have hit rock bottom now, I hope there’s no where else for him to go but up.

Charlie could do with some counseling, but I’d rather see him talk to Rose than Libby. I’d like to see more Rose scenes anyway.

Just to play a little devil’s advocate here with the flip side (and something that just came to me)…

Libby says that Hurley stepped on her foot when he boarded the plane. I don’t know how she would know about him being the last to board, sweaty, and headphones (unless she has been running around questioning all the less relevant Lostiest for details), but now I am thinking that the “stepped on my foot” part is a lie.

Because… Libby was in the back of the plane. The tail section. Hurley was in the middle section. He wouldn’t have passed her seat en route to his seat when he boarded. (Unless, for some reason, the only place to stow a bag was in the very back, but I don’t recall him going all the way to the back in the scene where he boarded – flashack in last season’s finale). So if he didn’t pass her seat, how could he step on her foot?

I just thought her answer was way too pat, although you do have a good point about the tail section. Something’s not right with Libby. Also, remember that she originally kind of had the hots for Michael, but now seems completely uninterested in him or his fate. Watch out for that chick…

I’m sure it won’t last indefinitely. Other Losties have had backs turned on them, but this group doesn’t seem to hold a grudge too long. Sawyer was persona non grata for a bit, but everybody seems fine with him now. The crowd of watchers turned their backs on Kate when Sawyer revealed that she had tried making a fake ID and was trying to usurp his place on the raft (and that she was the one the marshall was guarding), but she didn’t stay shunned that long.

I agree with your assessment – Charlie may not be using right now, but he’s still an addict, and he’s been hanging onto those statues as a safety blanket, knowing that they are still available.

I also don’t mind that the flashbacks haven’t been the big “shocker” ones that we got in the first season – they can’t ALL be like that. I think the reason they felt more awe-inspiring in the first season is that was when we were learning the “secrets” of the characters for the first time. New flashbacks about the same characters will reveal a little more insight into the character, but unlikely revelations on the same magnitude of the first one. For example, some have commented that the one real interesting flashback was Eko. Well, he’s a new character, and that was the first “story” we’ve seen on him – of course it is!

On Charlie, while there was nothing unexpected in this one, I think it did give us a little more insight into his character. Specifically, some background to illustrate why he’s so protective of Ethan. Even though they were both addicts, Charlie still seemed to be more responsible than his brother when it came to Liam’s baby – and more interested in the child’s welfare, and the family. Then Charlie felt abandoned when Liam decided to shape up – AND betrayed (very understandably) when Liam sold Charlie’s piano in the process. Charlie is still grasping for family – he wants desperately to be part of a family again – he’s been trying to fill the role of provider and caretaker since Ethan was born. I think part of what pushed him over the edge into this episode was being shunned by Claire in the last episode. He was desperate to get back what he had before, and not willing to be patient and let things cool down slowly. His addict-style behavior pushed it along, too.

Although, we may also be seeing the beginnings of whatever the “sickness” is that got Danielle’s crew. (Michael, then Charlie). I haven’t discounted that as a possibility.

In Charlie’s case, the Losties haven’t learned to hate the addiction, not the person. I guess there’s no ALANON literature in the hatch, is there?

Excellent and observant post, Wile E.

And there’s no Libby flashback episode scheduled right now.

Did anyone else notice what a pathetic shelter Jack and A-L were putting up? What will happen to that tarp the first time it rains-- it’ll fill with water and collapse.

I also think that Eko’s tree marking had some very pratical motivation. He seems to often be doing mysterious things that in the end make perfect sense. But I still cracked up at his answers to Charlie. That’s part of what makes this show so good.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sun is the one to approach Charlie and help him. She seems to be the most empathetic of the group-- assuming Rose isn’t around much. Or maybe he’ll end up under the spell of Eko like Boone was under Locke’s spell.

Don’t have a name, but I’m pretty sure this is the painting.

Charlie was my favorite character (although it’s mostly a LOTR carry-over effect) so I’m really disappointed that the writers are making him go 'round the bend.

Yeah, that was some dumb shelter-building they were doing there. And where do they keep coming up with new tarps for everybody? If I was living on that island with 48 other people, by the end of the third day of tropical rain, every single tarp in our possession would be up in the air, keeping the rain off of as big an area as we could manage…

Conspiracy theories aside… I thought Libby’s rattling off of the plane incident with Hurley was to show that she noticed him on the plane and that something (besides his foot crushing hers) made him really stand out to her. It was to show that maybe she likes him too…and I honestly thought when Hurley said that he recognized her…“Oh Libby did porn.” Says a lot about that that was my conclusion from that line.

Now my wacky theory (okay more of an idea) about the Eko trees and Sayid’s cameo appearence moving wreckage with an extra.
Last week’s ended with Jack asking Anna Lucia about training an army…
Maybe this has already begun.
Maybe Jack formed a sort of secret silent coterie of survivors that are working to build defenses for the camp without alarming the others that might not be up on current events.

Bolding mine, I think the baby’s name is Aaron

Was flight 815 carrying a load of tarps in the Cargo hold? It seems to me that there are a lot of blue tarps that had to come from somewhere, and Swan Station Seems unlikely.
