Lost 2.15: "Maternity Leave"

My understanding is that the writers have stated it’s nothing “supernatural”. So God, Satan, wizards, vampires, and angels are ruled out but psychics might slip in under the door.

Now all they have to do is combine that sound with repeats of “MY BAY-BAY!” and they’ve got themselves a number one digital download single!

Or to be even more irritating, put Waaallt together with MY Bay-Bay and add Khaaan.

Except, remember Ethan then came back and demanded that they turn Claire back over to him – or he’d start killing people. And eventually he died for it, so somehow I think they really didn’t want Claire to have escaped. At least not without them getting the baby first.

No, Mr. DJ, it’s clearly:

Waaaaalt! – My Bay BAY! — Nooooooooooo!

Waaaaalt! – My Bay BAY! — Nooooooooooo!

Break it down.

The bootie - Claire was crocheting not knitting (one short blunt impliment as opposed to two longer sharper ones), when we see it in close up it isn’t the best made little thing … if we are willing to believe that Claire already knew how to crochet (not really what I’d associate with her but maybe her granny taught her when she was little) I can’t see why she wouldn’t be able to have a go “under the influence”, I mean if you know how to crochet or knit you still know more or less how to do it even after a gap of ten or fifteen years, 'tis like riding a bike.

The “vaccine” - I had more of a problem with Jack telling Calire that Aaron had a virus before reassuring her that he didn’t have an infection :smack:

I’m assuming that these Others cleared out of the medical hatch pretty quickly after Claire “escaped” (whether planned or not, I assume not), since they had no idea that she was going to repress those memories for over a month. However, was leaving the makeup and stuff behind on purpose? They cleared everything else out, you’d think they’d take that stuff… it’s pretty important for keeping up the deception.

I think that the Losties outnumber the Others and now they’re almost afraid. Why? If they were in complete control of the situation, they wouldn’t need to have drawn the line in the sand, and, more importantly, now that the Losties have unearthed the Swan Station, they have a stable home base with which to grow their power (including weapons). Through whatever means (remote viewing?) the Others know that Jack is working on a force to attack them, and that they’re outnumbered (I’m going to be surprised if they have more than 13 true “Others”… similar to Jesus and his deciples with Alex being the Judas). But the Tailies are only a powerforce as long as they’re united under one leader… and sending Gale in (how can there be any doubt he’s not an Other?) to sow confusion and conflict among the ranks may be the best way to win this “war”.

Unless it’s all a psychological experiment, which I’d really hate to have as an explanation. I think the Others are in a fight for their lives, and maybe the lives of the whole world, to save it from something awful that they’ve discovered/created/unleashed on the island. And maybe, just maybe, in case they fail, they’re creating an “ark” to survive whatever catastrophe is to come (although, now there won’t be any polar bears in the new world!).

I’m starting to think of the Others as some kind of Science Cult.

Considering that Bluebeard showed up a few episodes ago in full makeup and regalia, they either have another source for the stuff they left behind or they didn’t evacuate until after that episode for some reason.

FWIW, that’s the episode that ended with Jack and his army idea…which is where I assume Skott got his idea.

Thinking about it… WHY is there a complete hollywood makeup kit on the island? If this was just a science experiment gone wrong, they wouldn’t have such a thing, unless they were big into theater night or something.

So… The logical explanation for that is, “This is the makeup you scientists have to put on if you’re going to have to interact with the subjects, because they think they are lost on an island, and the game would be up if you came out of the jungle in freshly pressed clothes and no beard.”

So that would lend credence to the theory that the Losties are subjects/lab rats, and this whole scenario was planned.

However, I still can’t help shake the feeling that there’s another group of ‘others’ - the bunch with a kid dragging a teddy bear. Why would scientists dress up a child as a ragamuffin and haul him/her through the jungle on recon missions, dragging a teddy bear?

I have to assume that regardless of when they abandoned the medical center, they have to have backup makeup kits (when I first saw the box I immediately thought “Various Finery Disguises!”) in order to keep up appearances at any future dates. And even if they find them didn’t and realized they “accidentally” left them behind, they can always go back and get them, I guess, since it didn’t appear that the threesome took anything from that bunker.

Steve.

I wouldn’t rule that out, but we do know that Ethan was working with Bluebeard, which strongly implies that Goodwin was as well. And the kids were kidnapped because they were “on the list”, and Bluebeard berated Ethan for kidnapping Claire isntead of making the list of who should be abducted. So, it seems reasonable to assume that Bluebeard is in charge of all The Others that we’ve seen so far.

Also, Bluebeard continued to use the beard dsiguise even though he had to know that both groups (middies and tailies) had encounted well dressed people who they know were on the island before them (Ethan and Goodwin), so wouldn’t be at all surprised to see more.

Maybe. I guess that makes sense, especially since we know Rousseau’s kid was taken by Bluebeard’s group, which is obviously the same as Ethan’s group.

Does this explain why the tailies lost so many people, while the other group didn’t? The tailies’ guy did his job correctly and made a list, then they went in and grabbed them all. Ethan screwed up, had to abduct Claire before he’d made a list, and then her escape put everyone else on notice and screwed up the plan to take more of them.

So I think what we have so far is a bunch of ‘special’ people that were somehow coaxed onto the same plane so that it could be intentionally crashed with some mysterious power that would keep the occupants alive, and then the ‘others’ would dress up as older castaways and sneak in and grab the people they wanted, leaving the rest to fend for themselves.

Well, it wasn’t that Ethan screwed up - he was just unlucky in that they started comparing people to the manifest…hang on…this means that HURLEY SAVED EVERYONE!!! He’s the hero!

There’s an interesting hypothesis about the numbers that is floating around. Link. I’ll spoiler tag this, even though it isn’t really a spoiler, just in case anyone doesn’t want to be exposed to this kind of guess work:

The idea is that 108 refers to M108, or Messier Object #108, which is located in the constellation Ursa Major (big dipper). If you plot the numbers themselves on a connect four board (remember the game Leonard was playing in Hurley’s flashback), you get… a pretty good representation of Ursa Major (although you have to conveniently ignore one of the stars in the dipper’s handle). There’s some further guessing about mapping of the 6 stars to the 6 bunkers, but I don’t know how they came up with a map of the island in order to do that…

I don’t know what this hypothesis does in terms of explaining the overall story, but it’s another interesing little tidbit.

In ths long thread I may hav missed it but did anyone come up with a good reason why the Med Hatch rooms looked so grundgy? I mean things like the fridge being knocked over can be explained by the others leaving quickly. However there was dirt on the walls outlining the animals on the nursery walls. It looked like it had been abandoned for 20 years. It had only been 2 weeks.

My wife came up with a possible explaination. It always looked that way. They were keping Claire so high that so only perceived her surroundings as bright and cheery.

I don’t think we can trust Claire to have al the details quite right. But mabeb they all secretly age1 year every night when they’re sleeping. With this show, who the hell knows…

And there was a big bear on the island! (-:
