Lost 2.15: "Maternity Leave"

In regard to Jin and Sun,

A few eps ago, Hurley gave them the thumbs up, I believe, when he saw them come out of their tent in the morning, smiling away. But then, I don’t know how much time has actually passed and how she could figure she was pregnant so quickly. Who else might have impregnated her while Jin was away on the raft? Hmm…

For those who haven’t read it Entertainment Weekly offers this theory for what it’s all about:
The Dharma Institute was set up to study a bunch of different fringe scientific ideas. Some of the experiments involved psychic powers, cloning, nanotechnology, etc. The scientists were a little peculiar but basically ordinary people.

One of the experiments was a Skinner type box where they performed pyschology experiments. They created a controlled environment to isolate the subject and stress him or her with random occurences and observe the results. But unfortunately the results overlapped with the psychic experiments. Somebody with telepathic powers was reading the stress that everybody was experiencing and snapped. And this breakdown triggered a huge leap in his psychic abilities. He was now insane and possessed huge mental powers.

But the breakdown also injured him in some way. He may be in a coma or dying or his brain may have been imprinted on a computer. So we have a powerful psychic whose sanity is weak and who may be lacking conscious control of his powers.

So the psychic is trying to cure himself by getting access to a new body. He wants Aaron so he can imprint his mind into Aaron’s newborn brain. He had to contain Walt because Walt’s own psychic powers might have detected his plans. The Others are the original staff on the island whose minds are being influenced by the psychic. His control isn’t absolute but he can steer people in the directions he wants them to go. The beginning signs of imbalance we’re seeing in the castaways is the beginnings of his control exerting itself over them. In a year or so, they’ll all be others as well working on whatever project the psychic wants them to do and thinking they’re good people doing what they want to do.
I believe I may have done it with my mind.I have an extremely fertile imagination.

RE: feeding the baby

C’mon, folks! Babies were artificially fed long before rubber nipples were invented. You soak a cloth in milk (canned, dried, or ranch dressing will do in a pinch) and let the kid suck it off. Dip, suck, repeat. OR you just feed him via cup, which is done in most parts of the world even with newborns.

It’s possible for non-biological mothers to breastfeed, but it usually takes a whole lot of artificial hormone monkey business.

RE: vaccines curing after exposure

Yeah, I cursed at the TV for this error, too. A “Vaccine” provokes an immune response in the body which causes the body to produce it’s own antibodies to an infectious agent. The “pattern” for these antibodies is then present for years, so whenever the person is exposed to the infection, the body “remembers” and makes those antibodies again. Years, I say. You do not have to keep taking vaccines daily for weeks or months.

Now, all this could have been avoided if they had just called it an “Immunization”, which is the actual antibodies themselves which you inject. These only last a few weeks before they die off, and they don’t “teach” your body how to make them. They are also useful after exposure. (So any *Lost *writers lurking here, and I know you are, just change one little word and make us all happy!)

Sounds like the ubiquitous influence of Philip K. Dick.

I think PDiddy could get a nice chorus by sampling the nervous parents of the show Lost.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!,
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!,
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!

Picture PDiddy dancing, accompanied by some thumping base.

It’s in your head now, isn’t it?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!,
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!,
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllltttttt!
My BAY-BAY!

First of all, I thought all magical and parapsychic explanations were supposed to definitely be inaccurate?

Anyways, while EW’s guess could be considered “accurate”, so could any theory that anyone else comes up with.

Once you start throwing in psychic powers, souls, psychic souls, psychic souls with powers…well, you can make anything fit.

Umm…WhyNot…what milk are you referring to? Where’s this milk coming from?

-Joe

The only thing missing are a few “My boy” 's and “My son” 's.

Seriously…Michael was the first character to get on my last nerve with his hit-you-over-the-head-parental-emphasis, and Claire was quick to follow.

Have you all seen this? It’s got potential.

From the hatch, same as any other food Jack and Locke are enjoying - like I said, canned, dried or whatever. Whatisname had milk on his cereal, didn’t he? From coconuts, if nowhere else. (Shredded coconut squeezed in water). Babies don’t need milk in a pinch - they can have any food pureed and strained. Yes, breastmilk would be best, but the little tyke won’t starve if his irritating mother defects to the Others or gets her head blown off (pleasepleaseplease!)

Heck, if it’ll get Claire to stop whining, I’ll balloon to the island and breastfeed Turniphead myself!

You know, that’s something that’s been annoying me. They had enough food for one big blast of a party, and then it was all supposed to be gone, and now Hurley has potatoe chips and ranch dressing, and Locke and the rest have fruit… I was wondering, when I saw Locke washing a whole sinkful of dishes, what exactly they had been doing that got them dirty, because they sure don’t have that much food to put in them…

It’s actually a locker, not a safe. I’d say the thin metal doors are fairly appropriate.
Right now…Sun might be pregnant.
Which means her period has to be at least a few days late, which means she most likely conceived somewhere between 2 and 5 weeks previously (that’s allowing everything from “hmm, my period didn’t arrive today” to “Oh shit, I haven’t had a period for 7 weeks”).

So, that means the father could be Jin-while they were still talking, before he got on the raft.
Some third party (Michael?).
Or Jin again, just after he got back from the others, once they’d made up.

I told you the contraceptives would have run out after 2 months…
And leaving the water running while he washed them, too! Can their water system possibly be that good? I haven’t seen any cisterns around.

IrishGirl, I put that info in spoiler tags because it was gleaned from the preview for next week. Not sure if others would appreciate knowing that.

So, so, sorry, I swear I meant to spoiler that (this will teach me to drink wine and post simultaneously). I will report the bad post and hopefully a nice Mod will retroactively spoiler it or delete it for me.
This is a spoiler, actually.

Does everyone know about the photo from the Lost set by the make a wish foundation kid? The one which shows the downed balloon canopy with the smiley face?

From the OP:

Somebody had to do it! That’s pretty funny.

I always figured that the injections the man in the hatch was giving himself were a stimulant to keep himself awake so that he could push the button.
