Lost 2.23: "Live Together, Die Alone" [Season Finale] Open Spoilers

The end scene showed 2 (apparently) Portuguese guys playing chess in a bunker that looked to be located somewhere very cold and snowy (probably Chile or Argentina?). They were distracted by their chess game and didn’t notice their computer screen blinking a message: “Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected” (or something to that effect). They immediately panicked and looked in a binder of some sort to call… Desmond’s girlfriend and tell her what they found.

It’s part of The Lost Experience, the alternate reality game that’s supposed to run throughout the summer.

In each of the job listings, there are a few scattered letters that are are a lighter shade of gray. I moused over them and they don’t appear to be links. With all the listings added up, the letters are:

ns lut mIe mA ya

I’m kinda bad at these Jumble puzzles, so anyone want to try to make something of that?

That’s all I got so far.

I’m guessing Gale’s not prone to telling the truth. I’m also guessing that the EMF screws up navigation systems so that compasses make you sail in an endless circle, or something erratic, until you eventually end up back on the island. Desmond said he was sailing due West and he ended up back at the island. They instructed Michael to sail bearing 325 IIRC which would be about NW and which would have eventually drawn him right back to the island, same as Desmond. Similarly the EMF could act exactly the opposite outside of a certain threshold causing ships to gradually veer away from the island, making it extremely difficult to navigate to.

Here’s my theory.

The Dharma guys were running the experiment. There was “an incident” of an unspecified type. I’m going to suppose that it somehow effected the the test subjects, or was caused by the test subjects, and that they became The Others. Either there was a virus which caused something bad to happen driving them to revolt from Dharma and become The Others or they just revolted on their own. In either case The Others would likely view themselves as the “good guys” and the Dharma folks as the “bad guys”. This would also explain why The Others seem so concerned with that vaccine and getting a hold of children, they are convinced that they are infected somehow and are seeking a cure. Personally I think that’s a lie too and that the Dharma folks tricked The Others into believing that for some reason, items which support this are the fact that Inman took off his biohazard suit without concern and he was a Dharma guy. Also, the Losties have been presumably exposed to no obvious ill effect.

I think this may have been established earlier, but she is definitely NOT the same person as Jack’s ex-wife. Because when Pen was talking to Desmond in the parking lot, Sarah was in the hospital waiting for Jack to “fix” her. That’s why Jack was there, running the stairs.

I may have missed some posts, so apologies if this has been covered…

It unjumbles to “asylum inmate,” which is the password to log in on a couple of the Hanso Foundation board of directors pages.

If a group of Dopers wants to work on the ARB, I’ll help, but I can’t do most of this stuff myself. I’ll run a chatroom for us to discuss it and help bounce ideas, but some of this stuff is a little complicated (based on The Beast and I Love Bees.)

i believe you’re confusing Widowed Woman with Boat (aka Not Jack’s Ex) with
Penelope, aka Desmond’s Girlfriend.
Penelope???
Odessy, anyone?

crap crap crap

you knew i meant Odyssey, right?

I just punched those characters into an anagram solver and here’s one of the top solutions:

A aliens tummy

I think that just about says it all.

“Manly USA time!” eh, maybe not. Here’s a list of possible anagrams. It’s long.

Okay, that was cool but where was the polar bear?

I was hoping that the boat would blow up too, but as it stands, it was a pretty good way to write off Walt, and more importantly, that annoying Micheal guy.

The dock has a sign which reads “Pala Ferry”. So are they in Pala, or is Pala nearby?

Also, doesn’t a vacum tube delivery system have to be closed? This one has an end that just opens out into the air. And how did Locke’s map piece of paper travel through the tube without being in a container?

And, for that matter, how can a wisp of smoke grab your leg and pull you . . .

Oh,never mind.

aka Libby

Nope, no confusion. Based on the glance at the photo at the very beginning I thought that the girl looked like Jack’s wife. Once she made an appearance in person it was clear it was a different actress. No confusion there.

Of course the Widowed Woman is Libby.

This is true if one were navigating by compass, but magnetism would not effect GPS navigation. If the island exists on the face of the earth and someone wanted to navigate to the coordinates the coincided with the position of the island, a GPS receiver would bring them right to it.

Is it just me, or did “Chess-Playing, Magnetic-Anomly Monitoring, Portuguese Guy #1” look a lot like Lenny?

You’re right, but as of yet no one has mentioned anything implying the use of GPS, so I’m not sure how that invalidates the theory. Additionally, even if Michael gets off the island, which I doubt he will, by using the errant 325 compass heading and is rescued there’ll be no way for anyone to know what the GPS coordinates are for the island making it somewhat pointless.

And just to fill out the possible scenarios, perhaps there’s something else in play making the island off limits to satellites too. Presumably Dharma has been operating here for a long time without being noticed by the powers that be so either there’s a mystical reason why satellites don’t seem to locate this island or Dharma is powerful enough to ensure that the authorities made the island invisible to GPS and spy satellites.

ding ding ding! Nice work. Of course, there’s no reaching thehansofoundation.com at the moment, so I’ll have to wait and see.

I can’t believe I had to work tonight and miss it all… :smack: :smack: :smack:

For a minute there, I was sure Henry Gale was going to let Michael have a brief glimpse of Waaaaaaalt from a distance and then say, “There, you’ve seen him. Goodbye.”

BLAM!

But at least Walt’s with him now so we won’t have to hear “Waaaaaaalt!” anymore. I don’t think they’re going to escape in that boat either. I think it’ll drift right back around to the other side of the island where the Losties are.

And what exactly do they think Hurley is going to do? Go back to the camp and do as instructed? Of course not-he’s going to tell everyone and they’ll organize a search party. The Others surely knew that would happen so you have to assume they released Hurley for that very reason.

I wonder if the Magic Button of Doom actually opened some sort of portal that Desmond was able to escape through? Maybe he stepped through the doorway (from another dimension?) back into this reality and during the moments the doorway was open, the electromagnetic effect was picked up by the Russians? I dunno. I think I’m WTF-d out for the night at this point. Anything is possible.
