Lost 2.7 "The Other 48 Days"

Yep it was on the female Other she killed. The one that had the list.

How did Ana Lucia know Bernard’s name when he was in the airplane seat up in the tree? She called him by it twice.

One of the best episodes ever. The great thing about having it cover the full 48 days is that everything was significant. No filler.

A few thoughts:

  • The Others who attacked had on clothing that looked very communal to me. Like they were in a cult. Didn’t the film strip mention the word commune? I get the impression that Dharma is as much a cult as a research group.

  • Last night’s episode changed my opinion on The Others quite a bit. I was so convinced that Ethan was seperate from the Others that whispered and snatched people. I figured Ethan and the Boat People were one faction and that the Others were survivors who contracted some zombie like virus. But last night it seemed clear that Ethan and Goodwin are likely in league and “recruit” survivors into their group and make them zombie like.

  • Don’t you wish they could have taken one of the rag wearing Others alive? I wonder could they even talk? Or would it have been all mumbles and backward whispers?

  • We really need to have a serious talk with the CFL. Was her group also inflitrated? What were her husband and crew like after they got the “disease”?

  • I was shocked to see Mr. Eko on the beach in a suit. I thought for sure he was linked to the Nigerian Drug Plane.

  • When did Libby first appear with the group? The Leg scene? Was she in the beach shot from the moment of the crash? Based on evidence from the previous episode, there was speculation she was a mole. Anyone see anything this week to suspect otherwise? Also, if she IS a mole, then there were two moles with the tailies and only one for the Losties. Why is that?

  • Seeing the shooting from the tailies perspective, I think AL’s shooting was pretty justifiable. It would be even MORE justifiable if we learn that AL saw something else when she shot. Between phantom Waaaaallllllts, Dead Dads, and whsipering trees, it would not surprise me if she saw Goodwin coming at her.

  • I admit I like Ana Lucia better after this episode, but I still do not like her. She just had a long way to climb.

  • Last night’s episode showed there was a week seperating Boone and Shannon’s deaths. Her emotional progress made it seem like a lot more time had passed. Of course, it could just be the effects of episodic television.

  • Well, the plane really did crash. Some had speculated that everyone was drugged and put on the beach.

The first thing she did was asked him what his name was. That lends itself to the notion that she has police training.

Speaking of that female Other, I have to go back, but she looked young to me. Like, maybe, sixteen or so. Like, maybe, Alex Rousseau?

I was looking for her, and I saw her come out of the water and onto the beach during the chaos.

That opening scene, while visually nice, really sort of took me out of the moment. I hate it when I really have to work to suspend my disbelief.

That tail section came screaming in. Wouldn’t it have bled off all forward momentum and just fallen straight out of the sky? Plus it came in as if there were still the rest of the plane attached to it. Facing forward. I don’t know much about physics, but I’m thinking even if it did still have forward momentum, it would have come in a different way.

And then it hit the water and stopped. The g forces would have been crushing.

I know that having survivors from a plane tearing apart at 30,000 feet is, in and of itself, the stuff of fantasy, but I could accept it when they just showed survivors on the beach. When they rub my nose in bad physics, it’s jarring.

Otherwise, I liked the episode, but was definitely NOT impressed with the Others.

When you look at it let me know, was she wearing some sort of mask? It looked like it but it went by pretty fast.

:dubious:
How did you feel about it last season when they described the midsection as “cartwheeling through the jungle”? Luckily, Jack was thrown clear. And 48 people walked away from the crash? Well, 47, if you don’t count Rose; 46, if you don’t count the guy who lost a leg (we haven’t seen him since, by the way–each part of the plane had somebody lose a leg, while Locke gained the access of his… coincidence?).

Hyperbole?

I was going to say the same thing - Eko obviously has a connection with the Bible he found and he was overwhelmed by guilt for the deaths he caused.

My other speculation is that Locke and Eko are heading for a confrontation; they’re being set up as the same type of character - men of faith, wilderness experts, etc - and they’re would be no point in having two such similar characters if they were going to both be used together. So the writers probably are planning on setting them in direct opposition - my guess is that once both characters are established, there will be some issue requiring a “leap of faith” and Eko and Locke will take opposite sides, dividing the rest of the survivors between them.

I was thinking the same thing when she was grilling him. Although if you can get the bad guy to confess his guilt, the flaws in your previous accusations don’t really matter any more.

He definitely could have landed in the woods like Bernard, but it looked to me on further questioning that Ana was having a problem with the consistency of his story, mostly. He said “I heard him yelling from the beach”, which implied that he was on the beach, ran into the woods, then ran back out of the woods. His story was getting more inconsistent as the questioning went on.

If he were smarter, he would have done just that – said, “I came to in the woods, and heard Bernard yelling from somewhere above”.

James Ford was a ferryman reputed to be in league with pirates in Illinois.

I think I saw it mentioned here before.

A few thoughts:

  1. Do we know anything about Bernard’s past? The horrified/concerned/disgruntled look on his face over 48 days made me think he may have some knowdge of Dharma/Hanso, and that he is now seeing the reality of the corporate tinkerings… a stretch, but what’s wrong with a little speculation?

  2. Is it possible that the others we saw doing the night raids were somehow outcasts of a larger group and shunned for being incompetent or too dependent? This might explain their lack of organization/sophistication, and perhaps they are bringing back these “prizes” in order to be accepted?

  3. Was anyone else thinking “Adebisi” and “Oz” when Ecko was observing AL by the stream?

I have a feeling that she didn’t really see anything but the bushes start rustling when she shot. She was already tense, holding the gun at the ready, and when she detected motion from the bushes, she whipped around and fired. I don’t think she took any time to identify what the target was… just where it was.

Every time I see him I think of Oz. Especially that anal rape scene with the wiseguy. Guess it was burned into my brain.

He plays a slightly different character now…or so they would like you to think. Watch out Jack!

I’m really looking forward to see how Locke and Eko interact.

Yeah, the whole Nathan thing was too obvious to be right, but I didn’t see the Goodwin deal until AL started to suspect.

Great episode. But how do we get from 23 to 5 (before Cindy is taken)? 3 the first night, then 9. That still leaves 11. Even if we count Goodwin, that leaves 10, and I guess Nathan is an extra casualty, so we could be down to 9.

Then there’s leg guy, so you’re down to 8.

And if it’s wild theories you want…

Others have already speculated that the plane crash actually had no survivors. Everbody was killed and the people we’re seeing are stuck in limbo - so maybe Goodwin, Ethan, and the Others are angels who took the good people to Heaven and now are watching the rest of the people to see if they are going to redeem themselves and get in.

There were a whole lot of graves already when they buried leg guy. I’m guessing that’s what happened to them.

These constellations are associated with Apollo. (Comin’ back to the Apollo Bar.)

This isn’t the first time that the arrow has come up, either. In the Adrift thread, I was commenting on the mural in the hatch:

In this episode, we saw the arrow logo immediately after we got treated to the stencilled “QUARANTINE” on the inside of the door.

I really love this show.

(And I liked Ana Lucia in this episode. “You waited forty days to talk?” “You waited forty days to cry.” Lovely!)
