Lost 3.16: "One of Us"

Good point. If a miracle did occur and Jin is the father, then Sun’s pregnancy could be putting her in danger.

Here is the weekly EW post episode article. Some pretty good summing up and a few things I didn’t think of. For instance:

Herarat could also be “Her, a rat”.

I don’t think they necessarily backed down because of her knowledge of their misdeeds. But rather because that her little speech probably convinced them that holding her up there probably would be presenting a bigger danger to Claire’s life.

I think she’s clearly had some extra training in the three years she’s been on the island.

I understand that most people now feel that the island time is moving at the same rate as real time based on the newspaper date but the video Juliet’s sister and nephew left me with the impression that time was moving much faster in the real world. They made a big deal in the flashback about how hard it was going o be for Juliet to be away from her sister and she was assured that her stay on the island would only be for 6 months. Her sister’s pregnancy was not even showing at that time. But when we see the video of her sister the child now appears to be around 2 years old. Unless there was some comment made about Juliet having stayed 4 times longer than her original commitment, it seemed to me that time is moving faster outside and that’s why Juliet is desperate to get back immediately. Can someone please help out if there was something I missed that disproved that?

Also, what first pushed my thoughts down this path was the comment in the building lobby by the recruiter who hired her which was something very close to, “Oh, you’ll be surprised how the time flies once you get there.”

The other thing that caught my eye was the partial headline on the newspaper. It said something about “10 major cities” or “10 U.S Cities”, I can’t remember exactly which. Is it possible that something critical is going on back in the outside world? Possibly something related to the research on the island?

No, but not everyone makes a point of proclaiming themselves to be the good guys.

“Herarat” also sounds and looks like “Ararat,” the mountain Noah’s ark landed on.

Didn’t she see her sister after she’d been on the island for three years?

At around six months, Ben said the sister was going to die soon, and said she would be cured if Juliet would stick around. So Juliet stuck around, and Ben never did end up letting her go. Eventually (three years later) she thought she had evidence Ben had been lying to her all along, and that’s when they had the fight where she knocked the glass out of his hand. A little while later, he took her to see her sister on video. That was three years into Juliet’s tenure on the island.

-FrL-

Yes. In fact, she said she had been there “exactly” 3 years, which would fit the apparent time frame perfectly.

When Juliet was in bed with Goodwin (right before Ben’s X-Rays were delivered), she said that she had been on the island for three years (to which Goodwin responded with something along the lines of “let’s celebrate the anniversary”).

Ethan also displayed apparent “superhuman” strength as well. So presumably Juliette either learned at Ethan’s dojo during non-lab work hours the three years she’s been there or they’ve developed a ninjaskillz-injection. Can’t recall any other Others displaying any such abilities though…

Yeah, I was asking myself this question when Ben mentioned the implant, too. Going to that trouble seems to mean that they intended to let her go back to the Losties camp alive at some point.

However, there’s also the factor that Ethan went to great pains to get her back after she escaped – making good on his threat to start killing Charlie’s people (the slaying of Scott/Steve) – and then getting himself killed in the process. Or by that time, was Ethan really going all Jack Bauer, acting on his own authority?

Bernard was a Tailie. Rose was one of our own Losties. The only Tailies still alive besides Bernard are the ones captured by the Others (Cindy, who appeared a few episodes ago, who “came to watch”, along with some of the children).

When searching for an answer to BlueSilver’s question about the headlines, I came upon this cool site which does “easter egg” screen grabs of Lost episodes, plus commentary. Pretty neat. Especially check out this one which says:

Which goes along with my sneaking suspicion that…

No one has a cure for cancer. Rachel’s cancer didn’t come back. Ben was just throwing her lies. Him “proving” he cured her by showing Juliet recent video doesn’t prove anything about curing cancer, just that she is still alive, which has nothing to do with Ben or this “Jacob.” She was totally conned there - which was easy to pull off because she was distraught.

Anyway…also take a look at this funny parody about Lost writers (for those of you at work, one of the first words spoken in the video is “Fuck!” so be careful.)

Was the symbol on the tree the same symbole that they branded onto Juliet’s back?

No.

Here you go, BlueSilver - a picture of the newspaper from the Flame scene

Sweet sluething, ZipperJJ! Thanks! Unfortunately, it seems the partial headline “Top 10 Cities in the US…” is probably just supposed to be a generic headline.

Something I can’t figure out…so why are all the Others so up on these espionage skills? If they were truely the “hostiles” and not the original Dharma scientist, then they have successfully taken over the island. So if this island is an unfindable as it seems, why exactly are they all prepared for a plane load of crash survivors? They seemed totally surprised when the crash happened, but reacted quickly as if they were all prepared for that particular eventuality. Judging by the state of some of the hatches, much of the islands infrastructure has been allowed to lapse somewhat, but they’re all up on their infiltration training?

Thanks, that does explain it. The recruiter’s comment about “the time passing quickly” still seems a little fishy though. Unless he was just referring to how all the bloody surgeries, manipulations, kidnappings, running from monsters, and book clubs make the time fly by.

Or maybe the writers knew about all the time speculation that’s been going on so they purposely teased us in the beginning of the episode and then disproved it towards the end.
