Lost 3.6: I Do

Monstre already asked this, but … are we to assume that was Alex on Jack’s intercom, or Juliet? And if the intercom thing is all somehow in Jack’s head (like the whispers in the jungle?) then who do you suppose unlocked the cell? Ben? Juliet? Hard to say whether Alex even has any access to that holding area …

Either way, that wasn’t much of an escape. Yeah, I get it, it was just a plot device to get Jack into the control room so he could see Kate & Sawyer in each other’s arms, not to make an actual escape. I don’t think the fact that Jack saw Kate & Sawyer embracing actually phased him the way some think it did. I think he expected it. His encounter with Kate earlier in the cell proved that he does care about her, but not to the point that she’s an emotional crutch to him. I believe his divorce hollowed him out to the point where he doesn’t allow himself to become emotionally attached … which is why I know he’s not complying with Ben to “save” Kate or Sawyer, or even to get off the island, but to finally start turning the tables on the Others and save both of his friends, rather than allowing jealousy to influence his actions. Remember, he’s Jack, his whole thing is saving and helping people without letting emotions cloud his ability to do so, which is why I really don’t buy the whole jealousy deal, nor the growing complaint that the show is becoming some kind of soap opera as a result of the “love triangle” … which leads me to a brief tangent: why do the people who complain about what they perceive to be a decline in the quality of the show continue to threaten an intent to stop watching, only to turn up a week later to say it again? I find that phenomenon to be a bigger mystery than the show itself.

Anyway, it seems kind of obvious that whoever was on the other side of the intercom unlocked the cell door knowing that Jack would wander out and, like a moth to the flame, go to the first open door (the camera room) and find Kate & Sawyer embracing on the monitor. My inclination is to say it was Ben who unlocked his cell … but that certainly wasn’t Ben’s voice crackling over the speaker. Supposing it was Juliet, then perhaps Ben & Juliet are still conniving together and not actually at odds like we’ve been led to believe? Not that I ever believed they actually were …

my running commentary…

That girl must be Kate. Yes it is! She looks really different with her hair and eyeshadow though. The song: “much too fast” hmm…

What’s in the box? Marsellus Wallace’s soul? Wedding veil! - did we know Kate had been married? She’s smiling. The cop must be a joke. It’s Captain Malcolm Reynolds! Shiny! Pizza boy, space captain, evil priest, cop…

Kate: “hey” Sawyer: “hey yourself”

How honest is Jack about Benry’s diagnosis?

Benry: “oh.”

Wow. Benry always has the exact same expression on his face. but is is anger? Shock? Holding back glee that things are going according to plan? Trying to figure things out? Whatever it is it’s really really intense and could be interpreted many different ways. i think instead of getting paid according to SAG rules they are paying him per intense ambiguous closeup.

Naked Nathan Fillion!

Kate: “I have to hold my breath to get the claspy things to clasp” metaphor?

Wow really stark contrast between young about to be married in love Kate and prison Kate.

Kate is afraid to leave Sawyer alone.

Awwwww Eko :_( Is the body a stand in or did AAA get paid to be a corpse?

Why is Locke lying about it being an animal when he just made a big stink about including everyone last week? And didn’t Nikki and Paolo hear the monster noises in the first episode? Wouldn’t they recognize the noise?

Desmond looks distracted. Does he know something?

Sayid is on to Locke! Why does Locke have to explain the monster to Sayid? He should have heard the monster in the first episode too.

Hmm what’s the detour?

So is the rock work towards some actual goal or is it just meaningless prisoner work?

“Did the Doctor get out again?” Ooh Kate knows about Jack now!

Alex with slingshot action! Who is she asking about? “They’re gonna kill your boyfriend, just like they killed mine!” Doh! Was Karl her boyfriend? Why is she asking for Ben - and why are the other others keeping her from him? Did they really kill Karl or this some kind of ruse? If so is Alex in on it, or did they stage the thing with Karl to trick her? If she’s in on it then Claire must have been released on purpose. That seems unlikely.

I thought I heard the smoke monster for a second but it is probably just a bird. What is Julie saying to Pickett? Wait! I have the power of closed captioning!

P: I don’t understand. It’s supposed to be two weeks
J: Our schedule’s been moved up.
P: What, is that an order?
J: It’s coming from him.
P: That’s stupid.
J: It’s not my call. That’s the way it is, Danny.
P: All right.

So they originally planned to brainwash Jack in two weeks? And who is “Him”? Benry? Or is there a higher “Him”? “The way it is” - more on the free will theme.

Wow Julie is just such a polite captor. She’s implying to Kate that she can’t control Pickett. Is that for show? And if Pickett’s wife wasn’t killed making him have a grudge, would their plan still have include threatening Sawyer’s life?

I wonder how Kate explained her complete lack of relatives at the wedding. Wow a necklace. Kate’s gonna run. No way she shows up to the alter.

Woah. Totally married!

Kate/Jack reunion! “I’ll give you two some privacy.” The total privacy of being watched on camera by peeping Benry!

“I don’t know what it is but it’s big.” So the rocks are actually a real project and not just make-work?

“Did they hurt you?” Why does Kate burst into tears? Did they hurt her in some way we haven’t seen, or is she just thinking about the general ordeal?

“How did they get you to ask me?” OK Jack thinks she is making a deal. He’s angry. But Kate explains that they are threatening Sawyer. Why is he still angry at her?

I love the photography with the glass reflected face of Kate superimposed on top of Jack’s real face behind the glass, and vice versa. Nicely Done.

Peeping Benry! Are there any Easter eggs in the monitor screens? 6 monitors. #1 swtiches between two different views of the hallway outside the tank. #2 looks like some sort of street lamp. #3 switches from something (woods?) to a building near the water. #4 woods? and is on the fritz. #5 Jack’s holding tank. #6 Some kind of rope bridge or road?

Why is Ben angry at Kate? Does he think Kate’s plea is working against him somehow?

Kate is… a housewife? A timer… avoiding a call trace? Mars investigations! I mean… marshall Mars. Feast of the Ascension? Having trouble thinking of a plot relevant metaphor for that one. Maybe it’s just a cigar.

“I’ll stop chasing you.” Really? And how would he find out that she left?

“Danny!” Julie still reigning in Pickett. An act?

“And how was your day, honey?”

So the detour was for the Jesus stick? Why did Locke lie about it if he was going to reveal it during the funeral? Or was there another detour we didn’t see?

“Your prayer stick fell out of a tree right on top of me”. Passing the torch?

“I’d like to think you died for a reason, Mr. Eko. Just hope it’s not too long before we find out what the heck it might be.” Nod to the fans? Will we find out soon?

“Thank you for helping me find my w—” Oh secret prayer stick message! “LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOCK NORTH JOHN”. I thought that was to help Eko find his brother, but I guess it’s to help Locke somehow.

Wow Kate and Sawyer are sharing information. Is Sawyer allowed to talk to her now that he’s gonna die anyway and has seen the island vantage point?

“Shut up James!” Fiesty! Are they watching this whole thing on camera?

“Why don’t you run Kate?” ooh the Kate runs theme.

Woah! Kiss! Sawyer/Kate shippers are rejoicing right now. Outdoor cage sex, kinky! I’m guessing they don’t have any condoms…

DomestiKate! Smiley face french toast

Oceanic tickets! “Get your passport ready.” Oh shit! Can she fake a passport?

Cop car says Miami Dade. Kate’s in Florida!

“I love you too.” awww

The supposedly nonfunctional intercom refuses to die! “Try it - the door”. Is that Julie? Alex? Who left the door open?

Monitors! More changing camera views with barely perceptible things. #3 has the hallway image #1 had earlier. Doh! Jack just misses #2 showing Kate and Sawyer.

Guns! OK who would let Jack get at the guns? Jack sees kate and Sawyer. He has a ‘that figures’ expression. Is he jealous? Does he think he was meant to see it? If so why let him have the guns?

Does Benry really think Kate liked Jack more? How aware was he of the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer dynamic before their capture? Did Benry let Jack out? Why let him have the gun? I guess it’s not too much of a threat if he’s going to die in a week anyway.

“If I was a betting man” - free will theme?

Jack - pretending to make a deal? Benry - genuinely surprised?

Kate is or is not happy that she isn’t pregnant. Is she unable to have kids because of her earlier experiences? Will the island heal her womb and make Sawyer her babydaddy?

And why isn’t her face plastered all over the police station’s wanted lists? Especially since he’s working on a fugitive case? “Miami Heat” tshirt.

“I don’t do taco night!”

I’m not entirely clear why she is running away…

Jack’s in charge!

Julie “I’ve always been very good at just following orders”. Still true?

Who else is scrubbing in?

“Everything will be very different” hmm…

“Did Alex ask about me?” Why does he want to know? And why does Julie lie? “We took her home last night.”

“Well see you on the other side.” The after life? The “Others” side?

Hmm the doctor smocks have hydra on them. Why aren’t they from the staff hatch? Why does Hydra have medical facilities? Were they originally vet facilities?

Oh crap Pickett is loose!

“Shepard wasn’t even on Jacob’s list.” Jacob who!!?! What list?!?! Is Jacob “Him”? Is Benry not in charge? What about Goodwin and Ethan’s lists? Is Jack a wildcard?

Jack feigns and passes the scalpel to the kidney!

Would your heart rate really increase from a kidney cut?

Mr Friendly looks really really concerned. Does he really like Ben that much or is he worried about consequences higher up?

Standoff!

“Stand up!” “Close your eyes!”

“This is for Colleen”. Why is he blaming Sawyer for what Sun did?

More super concerned Friendly. Tom looks like he’s gonna cry. Is he in love with Benry?

“Remember what story I told you when I was stitching you up?” I don’t! What was it??

Kate really needs to tell Jack that they are on another island and can’t get away. Jack seems focused on Kate. Is he just bargaining for her to get away or is he making them let Sawyer go too?

"Kate Dammit Run!:

Well the story was good, the flashback was good, the characters were good. The cliffhanger is ok. But I was hoping for a bigger relevation. The stuff with Alex and Karl and Tom and Jacob are intriguing but still shrouded in mystery. But what the producers have said about the stuff after the break sounds pretty good. Can’t wait!

next week… um month… um year on Lost:

OK apparently next episode includes scenes from this episode lol.

No reruns! Ever. Never ever! We promise. Really! We’re serious!

“You don’t bloody know what happened to me! You don’t want to know!” Charlie vs Desmond! Is Desmond referring to pre-island, in the hatch, or the implosion?

Locke happy in the woods. With the smoke monster happy light?

More of Desmond’s magic lightning rod? (not that you dirty minds)

Angry Jack! Sad Tom! Kate and Sawyer on the run, with a gun!

Wary Sayid!

Daybreak has sneak peeks!

What a letdown. And how is being stuck on a smaller island such a phenomenally enormous blow that it will destroy all hope? I mean, stealing a boat or whatever is going to be hard, but there’s always hope.

And how Jack didn’t ask for answers and explanations just is inexcusable. No one would EVER EVER EVER act the way he is. At all. Ever. Just stupid.

Because I don’t know how to make my closed-captioning work without muting the TV … did Kate actually say “I can’t leave without you, Jack” or just “I can’t leave without you” with a hanging elipsis at the end, meaning she could have been talking about either of them? That’s pretty much my “big question” for the night.

Well, that, and also: WHY DON’T THEY JUST SHOOT KATE? I really don’t think I can take much more of her. But that’s just me.

6 episodes this season, and fucking diddly squat.

NOTHING.

The cliff hanger had to do with Jack doing surgery on Henry. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

6 episodes. Not a mention of the numbers, or the russian ship, or why the Others wanted to kid nap Walt, or why Walt was appearing to people, or why there’s a polar bear.

Consider Walt for a second. . .he was the kid who the whole thing seem to revolve around for a while. But he was really just a plot device, something to get Michael running through the jungle, pointing guns at people. His character didn’t mean anything.

And, now, it’s looking like everything that we were introduced to in the first two seasons is exactly like that. None of it meant anything. Does anyone really believe that when we met Henry last season that the writers thought he had a spine tumor and would wind up under Jack’s knife?

None of the deeper mysteries that seemed to lie beneath have any bearing on the situation other than to get people to point guns at each and have sex with each other.

At this point, you might as well be watching the latest Michael Bay movie.

I gave it time, and held out hope, but now it’s completely obvious that they’re just making it up as they go. So, bye Lost.

Regarding Eko’s Jesus Stick. The inscription that caught Locke’s eye said

“Lift up eyes and look North” Is this from Genesis? About God telling Abraham to populate the Earth? Could be, given that it may be the case that Hanso/Dharma was trying to “save” the Earth.

The way this was inscribed on the stick could also be read as “Lift up your eyes and look North, John” (I have no screencap) John sees this as a personal message from Eko to him?

Under the inscription, right next to the name “John” it said (I think) 3:08.
which is this
“The wind 4 blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

I’m not any kind of Bible expert so I’ll let those in the know explain that one. My guess is that it sort of means maybe, t*hat things are the way they are, you can know this, know the spirit or the powah! but not know why or how. So deal with it. *

So they took Alex home? To the suburb I assume. I wonder if when Benry promised to take Jack home that he meant the island beach with the other losties. After all, it was Jack’s home for the past 3 months.

I’ve been a loyal viewer but mostly a lurker in these threads. Your question resonates with me so I thought I’d give you my viewpoint.

I do perceive a decline in quality of the storyline. The Benry surgery and the love triangle is the plot line for the first six episodes?!?! Nothing about Desmond’s ex and the magnetic anomoly listening post that ended last season. Nothing. Sure, Eko’s mauling by a polar bear and getting tree-whipped by the TCM were minor interesting diversions, but nothing substantial.

So with expectations being high for this third season, people are disappointed and frustrated. What keeps us watching? Hope. Hope that at some point there will be a glimmer of explanation of what the hell is going on.

Perhaps there are some who post “I’m done with Lost” every week. But perhaps they are different people each week. (I’m certainly not going to do the research.)

I’m not done yet. But I no longer eagerly anticipate each upcoming episode.

Erm … I’ll be in my bunk.

I thought they were holding Jack in a cell somewhere that was “under water”.
But when they brought Kate to see him didn’t they just walk her in from outside?

And did we get a shot of Benry’s feet when he was lying on the operating table? I still want to know if that guy has 4 toes on a foot.

Hydra seems to be accessed by tunnel or elevator (or both). They didn’t show how she got there, but we know she did it with a sack over her head.

Heh. I thought I saw his feet. But I forgot to notice the toes.

When I first saw that on the stick, I immediately thought of Psalms 121. Of course, in my mind it was “Levantare mis ojos a los montes, donde viene mi socorro” and I had to Google it to find the English translation. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”

I assumed that Jacob was the guy Mr. Eko killed on the beach. Didn’t they find a list in his pocket?

That’d be the wrong beach. Jack was on the fuselage beach. One of the (implicit) revelations(?) was that the Others aren’t the bosses either, or at least aren’t deciding which Losties to nap completely on their own.

I also thought that Ben’s tumor was in his neck area… is Jack that bad a surgeon to start near the kidneys or are the rest of his staff just that damn stupid?

Or maybe I just don’t understand complicated surgery techniques?

As far as I’m concerned, I was sticking with it through these first 6 episodes. I figured they’d get to something before their 3 month hiatus.

Considering that they didn’t, I’m through.

I won’t be in the Lost thread on Feb 8th.

It was either an editing error in the episode (Jack referred to the tumor in the neck, but as we discussed last week, the X-Rays all show the tumor in the lumbar spine–which is what Jack said when he first saw them) or Jack was testing Ben in some way that’s not entirely clear.

Hey, I also wondered if Benry had only 4 toes! I thought maybe the work Kate and Sawyer are doing was building a new statue.
Perhaps Jacob and Ethan are the same person. First and last name, some people call him by his first name, some by the last and Rom was just the last name he gave the Losties.
The tumor was shown on the spine, perhaps mid-lumbar (back). I think Jack only asked Ben about neck pain to determine the extent of the tumor’s growth.

For the record, the post I made in which I complained that the story is becomming way too “soap opera” for me, I did NOT say I was dismissing the show. I said that if everything ends up hinging on the human emotion of love at the END of the series (which I will watch through) then I’ll be really angry.

But I’ve put too much time and energy into Lost by now to just stop. I have this same problem with relationships too
Question about the location of the tumor: Didn’t Jack ask Ben if his neck hurt? Does a lumbar tumor cause neck pain? Or am I just making this interaction up?

Beats getting eaten by bears. It’s not unlikely, given the Others’ methods, that she doesn’t realize her mother is still alive.

“Hey, we’re going to the Pearl. Anybody who wants to come along is welcome. The more, the merrier.”

About FREAKING time.

I didn’t really get that Jack intended for Kate to take Sawyer along… everything he said was “Kate, I want you to run,” not, “you and Sawyer…”

Birds, stones, fish, barrels. Sawyer had already handed him his ass; this gives him the chance to vent while he plots how to go kill Sun.

re: swapping out Ms. Clugh for Juliet: Although it is a coincidence that Juliet looks like Jack’s ex-wife, it’s not a coincidence that she got to play good cop in the Brainwash Jack project. This, by the way, confirms that they have more than radio contact with the outside world: they know what Jack’s ex-wife looks like.

Even if Jack gets back to work, things don’t look so good for Ben, what with breaking sterilization and all. There’s still some neurosurgery to be done, after all…

I don’t think they have the ability to leave the island, or at least, they didn’t before they got Desmond’s boat. Their motorboat can’t make it, and I’m comfortable assuming they’re getting food drops just like the main island. That would explain why Ben really wanted the sailboat. Also, Michael has the powerboat now, so it looks like Kate and Sawyer have to hijack a sub.

Well, the closest thing they have to a doctor is a fertility specialist, so there exists the possibility that Jack is… lying!

Sun: Have you ever taken a pregnancy test?
Kate: Once.

The big reveal:

Eko owes his brother a church. That’s why he was building one.

Oh, and don’t piss off crazy french girls if they’ve got a loaded slingshot. Doink!

Yeah, that’s how I read it.

But that’s stupid. She’s never been portrayed, in any scene taking place before or after the events portrayed here, as realizing about herself that she naturally belongs in the nomadic fugitive lifestyle. She’s always been portrayed as someone who has been forced into that lifestyle, albeit by her own actions.

I’d like to know what’s up with that FBI agent who’s after her. It seems like there’s alot more than a simple criminal pursuit going on between them. And the fact that he would stop chasing her if she would stay put? That’s weird, and requires explanation.
