Picket doesn’t strike me as the sharpest knife in the drawer, so maybe he didn’t remember who went where. I think we can assume that Ethan never did produce a list-- wasn’t Mr. Friendly ragging on him for not doing that when Claire was in the Medical Bunker?
Wasn’t saying that – she obviously cares about both of them. But the writers continually try to tease us with the “Which one will she choose?” question. I think they should just take turns…
Why take turns? This is the 2000s! There’s nothing there that a nice, healthy threesome couldn’t fix.
Okay, so now that Kate is jumping Sawyer’s bones what love interest is there left for Jack?
BBS2000 guarantee: By at least the end of the fourth season Jack is going to be paired with one of the Others.
BBS2000 theory: Locke will fall in love with the ‘monster’.
While on the subject of love. Do we know if any of the 851ers are gay? Whether openly or not. I’m just curious.
We don’t know. There’s been some speculation about Tom Friendly of the Others since he told Kate she wasn’t “his type” and seemed overly emotional during Ben’s surgery.
When asked during the Oct 30th podcast, one of the producers said “there is a good possibility that we will discover one of the characters is gay on the show.”
My personal pet theory is that Scott and Steve were a gay couple and that’s why they were always seen together impersonating Rosencrantz & Guildenstern.
I dunno about his reaction to Ben’s surgery, but for cryin’ out loud, not every straight guy on earth wants to get into Kate’s pants!
I just stopped by to say:
Fish biscuit!!!
and to make a lousy pun about “Pickett’s charge.”
Either that, or, since she just had unprotected sex with a guy once on a TV show, she’s either going to get pregnant or die, and having a doctor around can’t hurt in either case.
Juliet? I’m serious. Maybe she really is trying to defect from The Others.
Well, I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I certainly do!
Well, ermm… yeah, that’s what I meant… Take turns at each orifi… um… er…
off to take a cold shower

next Week I tell you of the NUMBERS and how to do math to solve ALL QUESTIONS and you will see my GENIUS !!
Desmond. Am I the only one to whom this is obvious?
Good episode. It seems that they filmed it out of sequence because Kate looked like she’d been through an emotional wringer in the flashbacks.
Oh, and Matthew Fox is a god.
I really get a kick out of that guy. I loved it when he said he can’t wait until next week to see episode 7.
Put me down as another straight guy who’s not all that taken with Evangeline Lilly. I think her face looks like of rodentlike.
I love the deliberate misspellings: “surgury,” “Pockett,” “Mr. Echoed,” “Julie,” “Horley,” “Mr. Fiendly,” etc.
No speculation on which character might turn out to be gay yet? Who could it be? Hasn’t everyone we know been married, in a relationship, or at least displayed interest in the opposite sex? Unless it’s someone who only later decided they were gay.
Most of the Others, actually, we know very little about.
Then there’s the other 35 Lostaways who don’t even have names yet. They could all be gay.
I hear there’s going to be a scene where Hurley’s on one of Ben’s monitors taking off his fat suit…and putting on an eyepatch.
“I Do” has just aired in the UK, so apologies if all of this is now embarrassingly obvious and old hat to you lot:
Now that the Electromagnetic Anomaly (EA) has been introduced, no other entities are necessary – Lost could be all about the EA. If this effect is strong enough to pull an aluminium aircraft from the sky, who can say what it can do?
The black smoke could be a highly localised manifestation of the EA (“only part of the monster” – official podcast), perhaps further comprising tiny metallic particles so that the EA can transfer its force to nonferrous objects (such as Eko, sadly) rather like Magneto in the X-Men. On a grander scale, the EA could form an “event horizon” around the Island, shielding it from the outside world and contributing to the “snowdome” effect on vessels which attempt to leave. It could even move the Island(s) itself by allowing it to float on the seabed or crust.
And what is light, or radio, or even touch, but a manifestation of an electromagnetic field? If the EA can act incredibly powerfully, it might do so very subtly too, creating visions and messages for the survivors, and even acting directly on the cells of Locke’s spine or Rose’s tumour. (It’s a far more credible mechanism for a “Force” than midi-chlorians, at any rate.)
Even more intriguing, what if the EA can influence the outside world? It may be that the “messages” it sends can be picked up by remarkable individuals such as Walt, or Claire’s psychic (who I believe was lying to Eko). And, if it is strong enough to pull an aircraft from the sky (perhaps even one from Africa, or maybe an old wooden clipper from the ocean), could its influence extend to the balls of a state lottery machine an ocean away, and the subsequent life of the winner? The EA could, throughout, have been acting to bring Hurley home.
All of this sits well with Locke’s “Gaia” theory, that the Island itself is a conscious actor. But further intrigue arises if we speculate that the EA is somehow under human control. The Others would be prime suspects, given their utter absence of surprise at the bright lights and deep hum. But if so, why not use it to cure Ben’s tumour or save Colleen? It seems more likely that the Others, under Ben’s leadership, are seeking to gain (or regain?) control over the EA, and may be dedicated to saving the outside world from its effects, necessitating a cult of personality to prevent people wanting to leave and blow the whistle. Indeed, the presence of Kelvin (Sayid’s ex-contact) and Penny’s snowbound research station suggest that external government and commercial parties are already interested in taking control of the EA for their own ends. Under this line of speculation, Ben is indeed the good guy, and Juliet is Brutus, perhaps having been turned by Other Others including Mr. Patch, “Jacob”, the DeGroots or other Hanso/Dharma representatives, or said external parties.
And if someone did indeed use the EA to deliver Hurley, they (or their enemies) might also have monitored him via an agent: Libby, who also gave a (specially-designed?) boat to Desmond, who’s now becoming “gifted” like Walt after his failsafe exposure. An interesting question thus arises: Who is Hurley’s father?
I eagerly await the destruction of my natural (as opposed to supernatural) and parsimonious Lost Pet in February, just like all the others before it!
SentientMeat,
While I might be inclined to say you’re reading way too far into the show, I really like everything you had to say. Yeah, this thread is a bit old, but you’ve got some pretty good theories which I haven’t really seen discussed at any length, at least on here. I like the whole idea you have for the monster even though it reeks of overtly scientific geekiness (that’s okay, I think the same way), but the only reason I think putting so much thought into it is silly is because I have a sneaking suspicion we’ll never really get a concrete explanation about what the monster really is. I could be wrong, of course, but after this long we’re still hoping for such answers and I doubt they’ll buck the trend anytime soon.
I agree with you on the sentiment about Ben too … I believe his motives might just be more sincere than those who are trying to overthrow him. Ben may be a bit creepy, but we at least know he’s a bit of an pseudo-sadistic-though-mostly-harmless con. Basically, I think his bark is worse than his bite and he doesn’t know as much as he’s letting on. I don’t know what to make of Juliet yet though, and that’s what makes her so much creepier to me.
Here’s a thought: If the island has cured Rose of her cancer, and Locke from his paralyses, then why hasn’t it cured Ben and his spinal tumor?
