Although I liked the general plot and twist at the end, for some reason I didn’t feel like the off island stuff hit the right emotional notes. Was I the only one that thought the kid had down syndrome at first when he was in profile? Aaron in the crib was a cool twist but I hope that doesn’t mean that Claire is dead. Is Aaron supposed to be one of the Oceanic 6? Who were the other 2 who Jack claimed survived the crash but didn’t make it back? And what’s with the preview for next week and Desmond asking if he’s dead? They better not kill off my Desmond! I’m thinking that 3.2 million might have come from Miles’ special powers. Either a ghost told him about Ben or else maybe he can read Ben’s thoughts.
We got some more insight into the lies the Oceanic 6 told. I think it would be really cool if they have an episode devoted to their fake story. It can be when they all finally get home, then they start telling the story, and we get “flashbacks” as though the story really happened, how it played out.
I’m wondering How they are going to break up the remainder of the show. I’m guessing they all get back or leave at the end of this season. Then what are the next two seasons about? 5 - characters on and off the island? 6 - Everyone back on the island?
I’m wondering why the defense would want to bring the baby to court. He can’t testify to anything. All it would do was prove his existence.
I suppose Kate’s comment was stuck in there so we could all wonder who she meant when she talked about her son. I figured it was an older child from before the crash.
I thought this too, especially given Jack’s reluctance to get involved. Now, assuming it’s Claire’s Aaron, why the bad attitude from Jack? Is it because the circumstances surrounding why Kate (not Claire) has Aaron are sad? Does Jack find out his Dad’s a big cheater and his hard feelings are due to that? I don’t think Jack would have been quite so friendly with Kate if she’d done anything underhanded to get Aaron.
Count me in as one who’s wondering why the trial is in CA… As far as I can tell, Kate’s crimes were in Iowa and New Mexico (the bank robbery/murder). They guy she married was in FL, but I’m not sure she really broke any laws there.
I disagree with some who have posted that the island is causing memory problems. Kate wants to know whether she’ll be recognized or caught if/when she gets off the island–it’s not that she’s forgotten. As for Daniel, I think his memory problem pre-dates his arrival on the island. The guy is a complete space-cadet. Lostpedia refers to the woman who asks why he’s crying in his flashback as his “caretaker.” That might indicate that he was under some sort of supervision, maybe due to mental problems.
Locke’s turned into a real knob–bossing everyone around, the grenade, etc. Maybe if he told a few people about his miraculous recovery, they would understand his point of view a little.
We are getting close in the “real life” time frame of the writers strike. I wonder if the writers at the point of final drafts and production of this and the next several episodes will show the distraction of a pending strike.
This episode just didn’t have the zing like most other Lost episodes have.
I got the impression that the trial was in CA and both Jack and Kate are living there…so no need to leave the state. However, it did seem like Kate was not excited to meet up with Jack at that point. Seems something must transpire to cool their relationship between the end of the trial and Jack’s FlashForward.
If anyone can figure that out, perhaps they can also figure out why last week’s episode, for the first time (IIRC) did not end with BOOM, but with a blast of horns (musical horns, not car horns).
It’s interesting to note that, at least according to a variety of Internet sources accidentally happened upon via Google, the real-world scientist Michael Faraday spent his later life complaining of mental deterioration whose most marked symptom was memory problems.
Probably. We know nothing of how Aaron came to be Kate’s (and I just don’t buy that the government would let her keep him if she wasn’t claiming him as her own flesh and blood), how they left the island, or why there’s only six of them, and we do know that Jack eventually decides that leaving the island was a huge mistake. Perhaps he’s partway there already.
BTW, did anyone notice that this episode (and last episode, too) started with a closed eye. That hadn’t been done before. It will be interesting to see if there are any more open eye starts to episodes.
Yeah, this was the argument in my LOST group. We were talking when it happened. I say he was forgetting the cards that he already knew. They said he was trying to be psychic. I think that from what we’ve seen, that dude’s so scatterbrained he might not be able to remember three cards for a couple of minutes.
Pilot Dude: Alright, but just keep it to that science stuff, ok?
I assumed that Jack didn’t want to see Aaron because he was feeling guilty over something that he did that caused Claire’s death.
I figured out that her son was Aaron as soon as they revealed that the “he” they kept mentioning was her son. Well, Aaron or Walt. Had it been a new character (e.g Kate and Sawyer’s son) they could have just given him a new name. Then we would have wondered, “Who is this “Joshua” they keep talking about?” Instead they kept using awkward pronouns, which was a dead give-away that it was an established character.
As far as the trial venue: IIRC you shoot someone in Ohio and it’s a state crime. The minute you cross the state line it’s a federal crime. Now usually the state will go ahead and prosecute because they tend to have harsher punishments (e.g. the death penalty) but the feds can prosecute if the state agrees. So it’s not inconceivable for the trial to be held in California… What I thought was odd was that they allowed Kate to talk to her mother, a key witness, right before the trial. Don’t think that would happen.
What is puzzling is why Kate’s mother pressed Kate to meet her grandson. Does that mean that Kate is trying to pass him off as her child?
I also thought that the boy in the crib was different looking? Not Down Syndrome (which would be apparent in baby Aaron already) but something odd nonetheless…
So Kate’s mother is still alive after having been told repeatedly that she has a terminal illness? Hmmm. Haven’t we heard this before (Juliette’s sister). I wonder if Dharma is involved???
When Locke said that people haven’t been punished properly for being disobedient, I thought he was going to do something bad to Kate for not leaving before dawn.
Who’d put a prisoner in a fishing shack so far away from the village? Also, Kate blew off the padlock to Ben’s cell but neglected to mention this to Locke. They need to learn a thing or two about how to secure prisoners from Ben.
That was definitely the plan, confirmed by him apologizing to her later for not saying anything to Locke when Locke found them - he didn’t want to indicate to Locke that they had been working together.
Edit: Oh, and Faraday probably has an off-island mental condition that damaged his memory. This might indicate that they know the island has restorative powers, hence why they’d expect him to have better memory while on the island.
Or, potentially, Faraday is trying to develop powers like Desmond. He’s supposed to be remembering the cards from when CS Lewis reveals them after he’s given his predictions.
Assuming you mean the white one in her first court appearance, dem’s fighting words. I thought that was about the hottest she’s ever looked on the show.
