Lost 5.3 "Jughead"

Yeh, well, at least then I’d know where I came from — unlike all you zombies.

Yes! I thought it was a great line too.* Especially the way he delivered it.
*However, is it really that dangerous to shoot firearms around an H-Bomb? I thought the thing could only be detonated by a plutonium trigger? Unless it’s the trigger mechanism that’s that unstable?

You might be able to set off the high explosives creating a non nuclear but radioactive explosion maybe?

Although I can’t see that happening if the bullet doesn’t hit the housing of the bomb. She could have taken a step to the left and shot him safely.

Even for Lost, that’s just ridiculous. You could shoot the bomb with a rifle all day.

And I don’t know any reason to think that the small unexplained crack in the casing would be a radiation hazard. There’s the steel casing, then quite a bit of high explosive (the “explosive lens”), then beryllium, and only then do you hit anything radioactive: Uranium, then the Plutonium (all surrounding Tritium gas, which is what actually gets fused to make the big boom).

I REALLY need to get high before I watch this show again.

Maybe the problem with the bomb isn’t the surface crack per se, but that foamy stuff that was leaking? Assuming this is an ordinary, real-world-type hydrogen bomb, what could that be? Could the substance be volatile? Or could that have indicated that more layers beneath are cracked?

Or it’s also possible that Daniel was just bluffing the girl (who I agree is probably his mother) into not shooting, guessing (correctly) that she doesn’t really know that it wouldn’t be dangerous.

The realism of the bomb was examined here

The gist of which I think is that the radioactive leak is like battery fluid mixed with radiation, and that while the bomb could explode, it wouldn’t likely be a nuclear sized one unless all of the explosives got trigger simultaneously through the wiring. More likely it’s be a dirty bomb.
