As far as I know, Locke died sometime before the end of last season (the guy on the island is his earlier self*). To the best of my knowledge, while we suspect he’ll be resurrected, it hasn’t happened yet.
*IE: Locke pushes the donkey-wheel, gets teleported to some time period during the 3 years the O6 are in the “real world”. He ran around as Jeremy Betham. Towards the end of the 3 year period ('cause he’s laying in an open casket–which wouldn’t happen if he’d been killed 2 years back) he dies, ends up in a coffin for the big season closer last season.
I just wanted to post a little timeline to clear up some of the time issues.
Sometime early 1960’s - Ben was born (according to his fake passport, it was 1962)
1979’s - Charlotte is Born
1988 - Frenchies show up, and Alex is kidnapped
1992 - The Purge
On one hand, if Charlotte is Ben’s daughter, he would’ve been anywhere from 15-19. And, it doesn’t seem like Ben had any emotional connection to her when they kidnapped her, even though he knew everything about her.
On the other hand, Alex gets kidnapped near the same time that Charlotte left. So it’s possible.
Do you think everyone else has memorized the numbers? I would suspect Desmond knows them, but I can’t think of anyone else who would remember them by heart. Even if they took a turn or two plugging the numbers in, a lot has happened since then that they’d forget.
I envision a scene where a plan is hatched that involves someone needing to say those numbers right now or else, and Hurley is the man.
Distant past–donkeywheel/doomsday glyph/4 toed statue/temple builders do their thing.
1877 or so–The Black Rock ends up in the middle of the Island (it has dynamite on it. Dynamite was invented in 1866 and let’s give it 11 years to get widespread distribution such that a slave ship could have a lot of it.
1950-ish-- US Army plans to blow up atom bomb on island. Army is killed off by Others.
1970-1985-ish. Dharma. Eventually gets Dharmassacred by the Others. (But still does food drops and The Swan & The Flame are still active as far as the Dharma folk know ('cause they’re doing food drops)
1989-Crazy French Chick’s people. Killed off by CFC (who’s baby is stolen by Others)
199x-Eko’s drug plane crashes
2003-Flight 815
2003+100 days or so-Oceanic 6 escape island. Ben leaves island.
2003+101 days or so-Losties (but not Others?) start time-jumping
2003+102 days or so-Locke fixes donkey wheel, leaves island. Presumably time-jumping stops.
2008–we don’t know what’s happened to the losties (but I’ll bet their last jump pushed them to 2008 so we don’t have aging issues) but Locke is dead, Ben is gathering everyone for a “Return to Gilligan’s Island” style reunion, etc.
That about right?
Do we know when The Others came to the Island? Any hints if they’re the descendants of the Temple Builders?
Just thought of a question - When Daniel was introduced as a character last fall, it was implied he was at an institution or hospital when we first see him. Does anyone else remember this? Perhaps he was suffering from whatever time illness struck the girl from the laboratory.
and do you guys think we’ll ever see the chopper pilot again? Will Widmore track him down? or is he a forever loose end, like Walt.
Okay, based on last night’s episode, I’ve formulated some ideas about the Others, the Temple, the Smoke Monster, and the Island.
I think the Others are the Island’s way of protecting itself. They are the white blood cells that attack outsiders invading the Island, which explains why the Others attacked the U.S. Army, Dharma, and the Lostaways.
How do you become an Other? You enter the Temple. As we saw last night, people who enter the Temple immediately become changed. The armless guy who fell down the hole immediately began trying to lure the rest of the French team in. Once they had all entered the temple, they became “Others” and then tried to kill the one member of the team who had not entered the temple, and thus was not “of” the Island.
Ever wonder how the Others got all those tail section folks they kidnapped to join them? And why, when we do see people from the tail section again, they seem so placid about being kidnapped by weirdoes in the jungle? They’ve been Otherized in the Temple!
Who becomes an Other? The Smoke Monster is the Island’s recruiter. Based on some criteria of “good people” and “bad people,” it either tries to bring a person to the Temple to be Otherized (Locke) or kills that person (Eko, the pilot). The Others themselves recruit more Others based on the same criteria of good and bad. This also ties in with why we’ve occasionally seen the Smoke Monster showing images of a person’s life (Eko) and possibly taking pictures of people (Juliet and Kate). It’s analyzing the person for inclusion or exclusion from the Island.
Tangentially, I believe Juliet has not been to the Temple to be Otherized. She was not recruited because she was “a good person,” but rather because the Others were desperate for a fertility specialist. Her goal does not seem to be to protect the Island like the other Others, but rather to leave it and return home.
Mrs. Hawking said that Ben had only 70 hours the other day, but then she didn’t hit the fan when Ben said that he could only get four at that time. I’ve read some people – I don’t know if it was here, and I don’t feel like going through all these posts again to check – say that they were annoyed by that. But has anyone suggested that there might be that time limit only because that’s how long they have until Locke gets buried, and they don’t feel like digging him back up after he’s already in the ground? That’s less of a mystical explanation, but you would expect that they want to get Locke moving before he’s already buried.
I think they only have 70 hours because Eloise know they islands location right now and she knows that the island is going to disappear again. If they don’t all leave now she will have to go through the trouble of tracking the island again, and who knows how long that will take.
