I read about a third of War for the Oaks by Emma Bull a few years ago, gave it up because I the story kinda dragged and the protagonist didn’t particularly grab me. But I find that “Lost Girl” has a very “War for the Oaks” feel … protagonist raised among humans is drawn into a war between two elements of the Fae, who live undetected among humankind. Nice contrast between mundane world and fairy world. Definite urban mythology feel to it.
I found the ep I watched fairly … watchable. It was not horrible, which is saying a lot about a SyFy Channel original series. I’ll probably watch more, see how it goes.
I saw the pilot, and was interested enough to set up a series recording. The two chicks were hot (and looked great in tall leather boots), the other characters were funky enough, and the overall feel was otherworldy enough to keep me engaged.
We love “Lost Girl” - interesting characters, mostly believable writing, superpowers (basically - yeah, I know, they’re fae, not superheroes), good-looking guys and girls - what’s not to like?
It’s not really a Syfy original series. It’s a Canadian show that is wrapping up its second season about the same time that SyFy started showing it. It has been an entertaining, sometimes VERY entertaining, program. This, along with Todd and the Book of Pure Evil may be ushering in a new age of Canadian fantasy television.
We watch both those shows religiously, charmstr. What they lack in production values and special effects they make up for in being funny and not Hollywood over-processed pap.
Todd and Lost Girl are my and my wife’s favorite shows… Whatever Lost Girl lacks in believability it makes up for in pure Frenzy!
Todd… I am still singing the chorus from the climax number in the last musical episode, “Being horny makes me horny!” I am too old to gyrate like Todd, but I am pretending I have the hips of a heavy metal frontman
I think Lost Girl is the best of the Canadian fantasy shows I’ve watched, far superior to Forever Knight and Blood Ties (Maybe outsource your vampire actors? I’m just saying…), better than Friday the 13th the Series and the first season of The Listener. The second season of the The Listener was utterly disappointing, btw.
My wife walked in while I was watching Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, looked at it disbelievingly and asked me what the hell it was. I explained that it was like Buffy if it had been written by stoned 8th graders. I love it. Speaking of the musical episode, it struck me as odd that they used a first season episode as a framework for it, but it was still a highlight. Also I was quite surprised how good Atticus’ singing voice was in that episode.
My husband bought the “Todd…” soundtrack, and walks around singing, “Our love is awesome, the way love should be, free from pain, and beeee-steee-ALLL-i-TEEEEE” all the time now. (From the “Phantom of Crowley High” musical episode. Yes, they have done more than one musical episode. )
Now that you mention it, I can definitely see the resemblance. Of course, Chris Martin and Kris Holden-Reid would never be mistaken for each other with their shirts off, though – one is a musician; the other is a former world-class pentathelete.
I quite enjoy Lost Girl for doing a really solid job of integrating a fantasy universe into the modern world. My biggest issue with the show is that there’s always a warning about nudity at the start of every episode (and the end of every commerical break), but there’s never any nudity. False advertising, I say! And really, shouldn’t the succubus be totally doing it, like, all the time?
The fans demand a lot more gratuitous nudity and sex!
We have an autographed photo from occasional Todd (and Lost Girl) director David Winning, which we got at the Calgary Expo last year, where he was giving a talk about his experiences as a director on the Todd set in Winnipeg. Very cool!
We refer to Kenzi as Frenzy ever since her threat to Lorne about breaking Bo’s heart. Quoting as close as I can remember, “If you hurt her anthropologists in the future will find your skeleton with your head bashed in by some awesome chick whose name rhymes with frenzy.”
Speaking of Lorne and Bo, they have some of the sexiest sex scenes I have ever seen on a TV show…
Lauren? ha! I have always heard it as Lorne
ETA: my wife has probably been looking at me funny for pronouncing her name wrong and laughing in her glass at me
Hey, I just remembered - you can download the full theme song from that link, with the “Video Killed the Fae-dio” Contest! I’m really enjoying the song.
