Mad-Men: 4.13 "Tomorrowland", SEASON FINALE, (open spoilers)

After tonight no more Mad Men 'till next summer.

Joan looks a wee bit pregnant.

And . . . yay! I’ve been waiting for a Carla-Betty bitchfight for five years. That was awesome. I’m glad Carla finally stood up to her.

So, the big question is:

Is Don + Megan to be a repeat of Roger+ Jane, hastily entered into and regretted later?

Will Peggy become Don’s Joan, to whom he later will remark, “all the good times were with you.”?

Great, great episode.

What the hell was that?

The moment I saw Anna’s ring I knew; Don would either propose to Megan, or she (or one of the kids) would find the ring and assume Don was going to propose. So what’s instore for the future Mrs Draper? Housewife or copywriter? The latter would create a really interesting dynamic with Peggy. I loved the scene with Peggy & Joan; been waiting for years for something like that. I’d love to be a fly on the wall when she tells Roger.
Does anybody know if season 5 will be the last? I know the original contract was for 5 seasons, but AMC was in talks with Weiner for a 6th & 7th season. Either way I really hope Weiner goes into season 5 knowing.

oh, I love how Betty was like, “is it your secretary? I know you went to California with her.”

Poor predictable Don.

Hah! I knew Joan didn’t get an abortion.

My thoughts exactly.

Also, there was some continuity jump between Sally spilling the shake and then Don sitting on sleeping Megan’s bed that had me wondering what the fuck just happened and if that was a dream or this was a dream or… then we were in Don’s office with him telling the partners that he was getting married.

Good ole Roger: “Who’s that?” when Don said who he was getting married to. Then again, I was thinking the same thing.

Did anybody else become extremely annoyed with the ads for “Walking Dead”? I counted four ads for it in just one commercial break.

Well, I hated that. Everything was like a cartoon, everything – writing, directing, acting, editing. What the hell.

I thought the whole Megan thing was perfectly organic. We’ve seen for a few episodes now that Don was feeling out of sorts in his relationship with Faye and that he was warming to Megan. And so far we haven’t seen one single reason to think that Megan is an unsuitable match for Don.

And way back at the beginning of the season, the first time Faye came face-to-face with Don, she told him that he would be married in a year. She was absolutely right. I’ve been looking for this moment ever since then, but I didn’t know who it would be.

I half expect Don to move Megan back into his old house now that Betty and Henry are gone.

I still don’t understand why Joan lied to Roger about the abortion, and I’m also confused about the timeline, because it seems to me that it should be obvious to everyone by now. And also it doesn’t make sense that she could fool Greg, who even as a crappy surgeon, should be able to do the math.

And I’m disappointed that we didn’t get some clarification on how Lane persuaded his wife to come back to New York and what happened to that sweet-natured bunny.

And I’m grumpy that we didn’t get a glimpse of Paul all season.

But overall, I was pretty much cheering throughout the episode, from Don’s revelation to the kids about Dick, to Megan’s demonstration of the Anti-Betty at the diner, to Pete and Peggy’s sale, to Harry’s douchebaggery, to Joan’s impending nata-whatever, to the Joan-and-Peggy bitchfest.

“That’s bullshit!”

Ace episode.

I didn’t feel as strongly but I gave it the “meh”. There weren’t many scenes that really grabbed me and with the last couple episodes I cared more about seeing what happened at SCDP than Don randomly marrying his secretary.

Loved the Peggy/Joan scene. “Bullshit” cracked me right up!

The rest of it? I’m with those saying “what the hell?” Yeah, I saw Don and Megan coming, but not like that. And I never thought I’d hear cheesy Hallmark card/Lifetime movie lines coming out of Don Draper’s mouth! Blech!

It was strange dialogue for Don, and definitely yucky, but I think it was appropriate for his situation. He’s got stars in his eyes, and I remember that look from when he was telling Anna about his engagement to Betty. It’s his pattern.

Oh, and although my heart breaks for Carla, I also cheered at Henry’s oral smackdown of Betty. I also wanted him to add that grownups don’t ask for people to be on their side. They just do what’s right.

I loved the look on Don’s face at the diner, looking at Megan with the kids, and then when the shake got spilled and there was no explosion. That sealed things for Don – he wants that life. Or he thinks he does.

I like Megan. She treats Don like an adult. She doesn’t try to mother him or analyze him or question his decisions. When he proposed, she simply accepted, with joy. No questions about Faye, no “So soon after your divorce?” or “What about the kids?” And she treats him like an equal. “Do you speak French?” Somebody who was lovesick or insecure or conniving wouldn’t have said that. She doesn’t tippy-toe with him. She seems very confident, and I think Don responds to that too.

I loved her comment about her teeth, and now I feel bad for what I said about them. She’s a beautiful woman.

There is definitely something about California that puts Don in a romantic mood . . .

I was sort of wondering if he wasn’t displacing his romantic feelings for Anna’s niece onto Megan, actually. She knows him as Dick, she’s open and honest and refreshing . . . she’s my favorite potential romantic interest for Don since Midge.

So, in Friday Night Lights, there is this scene where the Dominican nurse is singing some song in Spanish to this guy she is seducing. It’s so awkward, and on another message board someone commented that that scene reminded him of the scene in 40-year-old virgin where the store manager is reminiscing about her first lay with the Latino gardner, and singing weirdly in Spanish.

Since then, whenever I see a scene on a tv show where someone is singing bizarrely in a romance language, I have to laugh. I think you can guess my reaction to Megan’s, “let’s all sing a French bedtime song off-key. Who cares that you don’t know the lyrics!”

Why was Betty waiting for Don at the Ossining house? Did she want to rekindle that relationship or what?

The conversation between Peggy and Joan was fantastic, and I’m thrilled that Joan is still pregnant, both because I think it’s awesome and because I’m now up $100.

The Megan thing is… well, how can something be both utterly predictable and utterly bewildering?

The episode did seem kind of strange. I felt so awful for Faye. The character seems like such a nice person, and she was so sad and hurt to hear Don was engaged. I thought they were good together. Maybe she wasn’t good with kids, but she and Don seemed like a good match. Of course, we knew that once Don admitted his background to Faye, and then eyed Megan, Don and Faye wouldn’t last.

Joan’s pregnancy will be interesting. People have been suggesting that Greg will die in Vietnam, but what about the possibility that he’s maimed?

Dewey Finn, I kind of thought Betty was going to say something about giving it another try. After fighting with Harry, maybe she realized that the grass wasn’t necessarily any greener.

I think so. I think that January Jones actually did a pretty decent job of conveying the fact that she was nostalgic or sentimental for Don. She really gave him quite a look there in the kitchen.

I loved what Faye Miller said to him:

“So you’re not going to put an ad in the New York Times saying you never liked me?”

Also, she summed him up perfectly:

“I hope she knows you only like the beginnings of things.”
