I believe it’s good policy and practice to review your vote more or less continuously, but especially as Day ends. I have a tendency to fixate and get tunnel vision. I entered my review to ToeJam expecting to move my vote because TJ isn’t as much on my radar as they were late N0, early D1. (This kind of review for specific players is something new I’m trying that may be regular in smaller games, but will be the only way of dealing with so many players in this game. I’m going to be working with a short list and focused reviews.)
I wouldn’t mind seeing a review or your assessment of either of them. I don’t have a strong lean on septimus but Johnny was my next candidate because I feel like he’s molehill mountaineering (making a big case out of minor issues).
I have found mafiascum.net to be extremely valuable in deciphering some of the secret language. Especially Commonly Used Abbreviations - MafiaWiki
I personally suck at scumhunting on D1 - it seems really random to me and a lot of “AHA! That’s a slip!” sort of thing. It;s generally good play to get all your ideas out there if you feel a re-assessment is warranted, though, I think - simply because you may die before getting your ideas on the screen. I generally don’t have great ideas on the first Day - or very often after that, for that matter.
Okay, I’ve read the rules and I see the mechanisms are similar to Mahaloth’s game. (Stating this because the biggest confusion for me in the rules was Pleo’s repeated mention of the multi lynch.)
Look
I understand too little too late
I realize there are things you say and do
You can never take back But what would you be if you didn’t even try
You have to try
So after a lot of thought
I’d like to reconsider
Please
If it’s not too late
Make it a cheeseburger
I would say his scum style could apply to his most recent posts, not the one before.
I’m sorry you have trouble with it, but it’s how I play Mafia and it’s done me well before (as town) so I’m not going to give it up now. I t only goes so far though because I don’t know many of the players.
No, because when we’ll make up our minds on that is when you’re dead, and you won’t be allowed to continue then. Nobody in this game has made up their minds whether anyone is Townie yet. Most of the game is played interacting with people whose Towniness is uncertain. Again, this is Mafia 101 stuff: Are you really that ignorant of the game?
Sunny Daze, all we know about third parties is that they may or may not exist, there is an unknown number of them, their win conditions may or may not be consistent with other factions winning (or a combination of both sorts), and if they exist, their role PMs are not part of the public document.
I don’t know if I’d say it was “common”, but it is certainly not unheard of, and is in most cases welcome.
Some players point out their suspicions on their ‘prime suspect’, and pretty much leave it at that. Some make long posts in which they detail their thoughts on each and every player in the game. Some will post a “wall of words” going into intricate detail on a specific player; usually for their top couple or three suspects.
Some people just drive by once a Day and say “Vote Pablo”, with no explanation or commentary whatsoever.
I don’t think there is a “right way”…though there is definitely a “wrong way”. The more information you give about your own thoughts, the better it is for the Town (assuming you are Town yourself). But the more you talk, the more risky it might be for you as an individual - depending on whether or not your suspicions are correct. If you successfully suss out three Scum through your dazzling investigative skills, you may find yourself a prime target for a Night Kill. Of course, you may also find yourself a prime target for a Doctor’s Protection, as well. But in almost all cases, it’s better for Town players to share their thoughts than to keep them to themselves.
Remember that the Scum essentially have a “collective mind”. Anything that one Scum member notices, they can post in their private discussion so that all Scum members know it (subject to faction membership in this multi-Scum-faction game, of course). Town does not have that luxury. The only way that the rest of us can know what you know, or what you suspect, is if you tell us.
Of course the flip side to that is that everything you tell the Town, you are also telling the Scum. That is a 'downside, and unfortunately there’s no way to get around it. But the silver lining there is that the Scum outnumber you 7 to 1 in terms of brains (at this stage of the game), so the chances are that whatever you have to say, one of them already knows. That means that your pronouncement is a net gain for Town, and most likely nets the Scum nothing.
You say that like it’s a bad thing. The highest honor a Mafia player can receive is to be the target of the first Scum-kill, as a vanilla. I mean, unless our protectors get very lucky, someone is going to be the first victim, so that victim being a vanilla is pretty much the best-case scenario. And if the Scum target you before they have any real information, that means that they think you’re such a good player that they want you dead just for that reason.
Now, if you’re a valuable power role, the calculation might be a little different. There’s a case to be made that if you’re the Detective or something, you should play a little more cautiously. But then again, if the Scum work out that you play more cautiously, you might be revealing yourself anyway. So I say that you should just go full-steam on Scum-hunting regardless.
I think the most important part of the third parties is the win condition as stated in the rules. That is, they cannot steal a win from town. If we lynch the last scum, town wins, full stop. Maybe third parties also win, but they can’t stop town. So that’s a big pressure taken off end game, which I’ve seen be derailed by the need to hunt third parties over scum to make sure they don’t win steal.
Yeah exactly, and I can’t help but be suspicious of septimus for the fact that he keeps harping on this. Of course you suck at scum hunting D1, if it was easy no one would play! It comes across as woe is me, I’m just a poor townie, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
{Note: Total Lost is asking if septimus is soft claiming.}
Why do you care? Why is it important at this particular point in time? You certainly look like you are pushing for a claim. Why would you do that?
