The thought crossed my mind, especially since there is a secret role. The only question in that case is, is Mad pro-town or scum?
I don’t think Mad is the secret role, or more specifically, a secret role that needs to get dunked today. We have no record for Mad, so the town wouldn’t be able to make a reasonable choice. (This is meta-gaming again, but with so many substitutions and missing players, its kind of hard not to). Anyway, my point is, if Mad truly needs to get dunked and needs to get dunked today, it would have been unfair to let Mad slide through the first two days.

To address the meta-gaming, my intention is to NOT make substitutions unless it is requested of me to do so, preferably through PMs. That is, I have not been tracking participation or post counts; instead, I have poked people when I either noticed lots of “where is so-and-so?” questions in the thread or when I specifically received PMs requesting I do so.
While I consider it poor form to deliberately not participate, I also concede that there is a fine line between failing to participate, and deliberately having a low post count to stay under the radar. Thus, my thoughts are such that if a player gets questioned in thread as to where they’ve been, and they’re deliberately laying low, it should be self-correcting because he’s just drawn attention to himself which is contrary to his actions. However, if he fails to respond, to ensure it isn’t due to IRL issues, I will consider a sub when they do not respond to my prodding.
In the case of MadTheSwine, I received PMs requesting I poke him. By the time I started seeing calls for his subbing, I had received a response and the general feel of the game seemed to be to let him pass. In the case of MonkeyMensch, I received PMs requesting I poke him, and he did not respond by the time I started receiving requests for him to be subbed out. Thus, my conclusion is that both had IRL issues, and one was able to get back in time, and the other was not.
FWIW, I intend to use this same process, on everyone, regardless of their role because I do not want the onus to lay on me–someone who isn’t playing the game–to decide where the fine line between lurking and lack of participation should be drawn. Hence, please do not use the fact that MadTheSwine was not subbed as reason to believe I thought his role to be either of great or minimal value as it was based on the responses I received in thread and not on his role.
