My response was to the op itself, which was about “male-centric threads”. No, discussing the issue of the op is not a stupid insistence.
Please tell me how and why being offended by the existence of a Ginger v Marianne thread is less of a choice than being offended by a political position being expressed is. No, femaleness does not mandated being offended by that thread.
Trying to get a sense (as well as is realistically possible) of what our current gender breakdown of “regulars” (as I define it) is, is not dirty laundry, even if some silliness gets posted as well.
To the last, 100% agree. That’s being a jerk and I cannot understand why it was ever allowed. But there is a cultural history to this board that includes answering questions with a mixture of scholarship and humor, of both irreverent and sophomoric sorts. No question the humor cannot overshadow the informative, but the board would be changing some of its basic character to make itself devoid of the sophomoric.
And should there be no content of the Ginger v Marianne level sort? Those polls almost always result in men saying they do not prefer the more glamorous one and find the Marianne/Betty/Velma more appealing, often with women having assumed that it would be the other way around. It almost always is a discussion more about character traits than who is more HAWT.
On the one hand I admire your going with the informative there. But OTOH the OP either is unaware of the discussions here and elsewhere on these boards about these subjects, or much more likely, is aware and is, if not trolling with that thread, being a jerk. Placing that in CS in particular is hard to read as other than trolling. The question is not about the movie; at best it was inspired by it and is asking if a certain thing is actually possible. That could be a GQ question but one suspects the purpose of the post was to be obnoxious, not to get an answer.
I’m thinking the follow up should be if it is possible for an asshole to do the same and to ask the op if he can try to inhale and blow out smoke to test it for us. But I’d be modded if I did that there, especially now that a mod has spoken.
Well, I’m assuming that it was just her being tone-deaf.
Yep…it speaks volumes that even my backward-ass workplace would classify that as harassment. (To the credit of the company that produces the anti-harassment training modules we have to complete every year, they do present scenarios featuring both women and men as the victims.)
Speaking about both this board’s threads and real-life…I find it refreshing and encouraging when men step in to show their support. In general, I think it’s important for people to stay informed, even about topics that don’t directly impact them.
Here is a whole thread where you can go call out people being assholes, bullies, and harassers. Should occupy your time for a while.
Like when you’re a professional musician, and the tone is by John Philip Sousa, that kind of tone deaf?
You’re very kind.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance.
But never fail to attribute to malice that which is not adequately explained by ignorance.
You’re a towel!
've given uf by y your favoring fzvors we want yo be .
Not trying to prove a point, trying to find out, as best as possible given the limitations of the tools we have, what the reality actually is, rather than what my impression is, or what other posters impressions are. Just because roughly half of the posters who stand out in my mind are female does not mean that such is reality.
I’m looking for an n of 200 plus.
Because it was a rant. A polite rant, but a rant. Rants, even courteous ones, go in the Pit.
Says you.

You haven’t read any of the posts where dozens of people believe that those (including themselves) who earn more than 90% of US citizens do aren’t rich? There’s a special level of disconnect to denying how financially fortune one is…
Well, a lot of Republicans believe they are simply temporarily inconvenienced millionaires.
+1:(
Send a PM Beck, please.
What’s wrong with financial optimism?
There’s optimism, and then there’s delusion. If something like 40% of the population genuinely believes that they will end up at 1% income levels, they’re not being “financially optimistic”, they’re buying into a fairy tale.
We don’t respect the judgement of people who think they have a good chance of winning the lottery. And we don’t respect the ethics of people who try to convince potential lottery-ticket buyers than their chances of winning are good. And for average working class Americans, becoming a millionaire through working is not a massively more realistic prospect than winning a huge lottery jackpot.
Naively believing that such outcomes are likely, or cynically encouraging working-class voters to believe that such outcomes are likely so they’ll vote for policies that favor the wealthy, isn’t at all the same thing as rational “financial optimism”.
I’m not arguing against irreverant humor or anything, but I’d like to point out that the board having a “cultural history” of something or other isn’t necessarily a point in favor of whatever that something is. We like to fancy ourselves as being a “smart” message board, and we’ve definitely got smart people here, but we’re just as likely to gravitate towards cheap attention getting gimmicks (read: hot girls, boobs) as the rest of the internet.
Like falling for a super hot fake quadriplegic troll whose descriptions of herself are so over the top it’s obvious to me this was written by some guy somewhere who had dreamed up his own perfect little quad girl for him to wank to. Seriously, see the quote:
Gee, wonder why she became so popular in such a short amount of time. And yeah, I know she had plenty of female fans too, but I’m certain the above, as well as “her” frequent discussions of sex contributed.
How about Opal , may she rest in peace, who was probably the most iconic poster on this board? She had several public meltdowns fueled by her various disorders and meds being out of whack, and people always defended her and fed her her #1 drug of choice, which was attention. Her threads had more white knights than could probably be counted. She was also pretty, thin, a former stripper, and liked to show herself on webcam, and talked pretty openly about sex. Starting to see more where her rabid fans came from…
How about when Donna Lange showed up on the boards and posted almost exclusively about her breasts? She got a ton of attention too. Starting to see a theme here?
So yeah. Having a history of something and being predictable isn’t necessarily a good thing. The board’s got character, and as with any character traits, some are flaws. It doesn’t follow the “hot girl” theme, but why does anyone think no one has come out and pitted Skald for the recent kerfuffle? Because we all knew exactly how it would go, and frankly after so many threads of what I can only describe as Misogyny-gate , the sequel, none of us had the energy left to fight off Skald’s fan club. Although, seeing his reputation here take a bit of a hit has been really satisfying.
on preview: re: dropzone. I know he’s had some struggles with drinking, so I’m guessing he was drunk when he wrote that. Hope he’s ok.
Crappy tablet. No worries.
