OK guys, there might be some slight possibility that I and the husbnd might be able to get to New York: it’s occured to me that I have a Real Job now and that means that affording something like this isn’t automattically out of the question. And god knows I’d love to meet some of you. However, I know NOTHING about New York–I was raised all ove the South Eastand South West, but Iv’e never been north or east of DC, and don’t have much experience with cities in general. SO I have some questions:
What airport do I need to fly into? Does one inevitably take cabs from airports?
Would there be avalible floorspace for my husband and I? I am pretty sure that paying for a hotel would make the whole thing out of the question.
Roughly, how much would I need to budget for food, transportation, bail, etc.? I understand that how much you drink makes a difference here, but a rough aproximation would help.
HTere are stilll some other issues to be cleared up, but I want to go-I just hope i can find some way to make it work.
Manda JO, last year I think I spent $50 in NYC altogether. Friday through Sunday. But of course I crashed on Pucette’s floor and had breakfast Saturday morning at vix’s Brooklyn Babes Brunch, and Sunday of course at the infamous (and banned in 39 states and Cuba) Billdo’s Kosher Sunday Bagel Brunch. Or whatever he’s calling it this year … last NYCMegafest it was Hangover Central until probably Tuesday after the fest;)

Wow, we might get Manda JO and hubby. That would be really cool. We’d have someone to give good advice immediately as folks are about to do things that could be considered bad advice. (Of course, they probably won’t follow the advice, but life at DopeFests).
I live here, so I probably wouldn’t be the best to provide budgeting advice. And at this point, my sofa/floor is getting fairly filled, so I can’t offer a place to stay. But I can give transportation-related suggestions.
You can fly into any of the three New York airports, LaGuardia, Kennedy or Newark. I would not recommend any other airports. You can get into Manhattan from any of the airports by public transportation.
From Newark, you can either take a bus that will get you into the Port Authority (or a couple of other Manhattan locations) or the Monorail to the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station. Either will cost you about $12 round trip.
From JFK or LGA, you can take a bus, that will take you to Grand Central (or a couple of other Manhattan locations), for about $12 round trip. From JFK, you can take the airport shuttle to the A train (the subway of song), which will be a long ride into Manhattan. From LGA you can take the M60 bus to 125th Street in Manhattan. Either of these will only cost you $1.50 each way.
From any of the Manhattan locations, you can take the subway to just about anywhere you want to go for $1.50 (or you may want to get a $4.00 all day pass). If you used the City bus or subway, you can most likely transfer for free.
The subway can be sort of a pain for newcomers to use, but it really isn’t too bad, and is part of the NYC experience. Whoever you’re staying with will almost certainly be using the subway to get around, so you’ll get used to it pretty quick.
As for timing, I’d try to get in to NY on late afternoon Friday, if the timing works with work, etc. Otherwise, sometime Friday night should be fine. I’d recommend a late afternoon flight back Sunday (4:00ish or later), so you don’t have to rush to the airport.
Well, I personally will be wearing one of my gangster suits for Saturday night. Three-piece pinstripes, plus fedora. Haven’t decided yet between the black with red stripes or the brown with tan stripes.

For the DopeFest itself, I’m planning on getting a hotel so that other out-of-towners can have the floor space they so desparately need.
I can’t wait. Ain’t no party like a Chi-Town party but a NY party comes close. 
Alright it looks like POSSIBLY I’ll be in. I am working now during the week until 6 on Fridays and I’m not going to be able to afford a train ticket in and partking plus tolls to and from Jersey City for Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
So if I can stay at some kind Doper’s abode I can make it Friday night, Staturday and Sunday. If I can not stay at some kind Doper’s adobe I will only be able to do Saturday or Sunday.
So anyone want to put me up for the night, the floor is fine, but I’m alergic to cats. Also I have been known to snore and pass gass while sleeping.

Hee. Just to recap the space that remains here; RTFirefly has taken one space; which leaves proper couches for one or two more dopers; floor space for 'bout 10 if people are friendly and don’t snore overmuch; and we do have a cat.
Ace: I’ll be happy to take it. I have a sleeping bag, and Aaron will have his own accommodations. He sleeps through the night, so he won’t be a bother. And he’s used to animals, so the cat won’t be a problem.
BTW, how’s the parking in yer neck of the woods?
