Mashed peas

A very easy, tasty, inexpensive, and healthy recipe we’ve been doing a lot lately. Works as a side dish or a light vegetarian entree.

1 bag frozen peas (about a lb)
2 tbs butter (or more)
Seasoning (we use Knorr chicken bouillon powder, but you could use salt and pepper, a seasoning mix like Creole or Cajun seasoning, or whatever you like)

Put the peas in a bowl, microwave until steaming hot (about 5 minutes). With a hand blender (or food processor or similar), blend peas with butter and seasoning to desired consistency. That’s it. Delicious and healthy. Feel free to use more butter.

Isn’t that the British recipe for “mushy peas” also?

Not really - it looks kind of similar, but my recipe uses frozen green peas, while British mushy peas use dried peas that need to be cooked a long time and have a very different flavor and texture.

ahh ok always wanted to try those … i love peas lol

They’re called Marrowfat peas:

Marrowfat Peas are the key to Mushy Peas.

I have had mashed peas as described in the OP. I prefer thick pea soup but mashed peas are better than just plain old peas rolling around a plate.

And marrowfat peas are available from Amazon. I’ve tried both things. Smashed peas like the OP described and true mushy peas. I like both, but feel the mushy peas are worth the extra soaking/effort.

Where do you live? I can buy them at Walmart and Bulk Barn here in Toronto. (Probably other places too.)

It’s always been my misfortune that frozen peas are sour.

I’m in western Pennsylvania. I haven’t been to Walmart in a few years. I prefer Amazon to Walmart and couldn’t find marrowfat pras at my local grocery store.

Put some mint in there…

That sounds tasty. It’s rather like hummus. I’d eat with crackers or spread on toast.

And/or minced garlic.

Oh yeah, thick pea soup is the best. I remember having the perfect bowl of it in a diner once, it was so savory I could have eaten a bathtub of it. Even when not done perfectly it’s still great. But it’s gotta be the really thick kind, so thick that it’s closer to a paste than actual soup.

It’s funny because “pea soup” is often used as a metaphor for something unpleasant but it’s decadently good. I haven’t had a good pea soup in years and now I want it again dang it.

I’ve never had mashed peas but if it’s anything close to a proper pea soup, sign me up.

I had heard of mushy peas and finally got a chance to try them when I was in Glasgow. One of the food trucks at the convention center had fish and chips with mushy peas. When I ordered it they actually asked if I really wanted the mushy peas, presumably because from my accent they could tell I wasn’t a local. I confirmed that I did, and I liked them.

I had mushy peas on my hot dog at Harry’s Cafe De Wheels in Sydney. Very tasty but a bit messy to eat.

All we are saying is give peas a chance.

Ok John/Yoko, I’m going to.

I make a very good split pea soup, quite thick, but of course, I make the broth with a ham hock first then put ham in the soup.

I’ve never heard of mashed peas before but I’m going to give them a try as they sound pretty tasty.

I actually made another recipe tonight for dinner that I got from the dope more than 5 yrs ago: Crash Hot Potatoes. We planted rosemary this year and the fresh rosemary made them extra good.

I’ve had pea soup made with frozen peas like this (not split peas), but flavored with fresh tarragon. It was delicious.
