Mayonnaise on hamburgers

I usually request mayo on my burger but I’m not so adamant that I won’t eat the burger without it. BUT if I make a burger at home, I’ll use Miracle Whip instead of mayo. Yes, I can hear many of you gagging out there, but I was in my teens before I even realized that Miracle Whip was NOT mayonnaise. About the same time I learned that margarine was not butter.

Mayo and catsup mixed creates a “secret sauce” flavor that reminds me of the big mac. Not saying that’s good or bad, I can see how some would like it.

McDonald’s “special sauce” is basically Thousand Island dressing with a couple of tweaks, and Thousand Island has a mayo-ketchup base.

Just the tiniest bit. Enough to wet the bread. Not really enough to see. Anything more than that is gross.

I went with the first option because it’s usually true. There are exceptions for certain burgers.

And I also love ketchup + Mayo, but do not think it tastes a thing like Thousand Island (aka McSauce). Thousand Island does not taste tomato-y to me at all.

I’m somewhere between HELL YES and I don’t care. Sometimes I want it, sometimes I don’t. It’s not integral to the concept of a burger for me, just nice as a way to change things up once in a while. And call me a heathen, but I’d go for Miracle Whip before real mayo, but not to the point of refusing mayo if that’s the only option.

I’ll let that go seeing as how we’re talking about McDonald’s grade food here

and here i thought i was the only one who used mayo on my burger…woohoo there is a whole thread about. Hi everybody this is my first post.

Agreed, the idea of mayo on a burger grosses me out. I prefer either ketchup/mustard or A1 steak sauce. Always have to have cheese, as well.

Yep – I’m siding with that ([Diogenes mode] creeper [/Diogenes mode]) Alton Brown cat. Yeah, he might be young, but…snap out of the fun … a good burger, with good mayo and some good pepppr — it’s nice!

Full disclaimer, I also like ketchup, but it’s an either/or for me.

A home-grilled burger gets damn near everything in the refrigerator: cheese, ketchup, mustard, relish and/or pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion (grill 'em first), and yes, mayo.

But the mayo is mixed with A-1 sauce right on the bun.

The recipe used in my house.

1 egg
½ tbsp mustard
½ tbsp salt
2 tbsp key lime juice
Black Pepper powder
1 cup oil

I don’t usually put mayo on my burgers, but I’ll enjoy it if it’s prepared that way. My reasoning is that I usually am putting way too much mayo on my fries (burgers are usually had with fries) and adding it to the burger would just be overkill.

“not a proper burger without it” seems to be in the lead.

And people say the world isn’t ending.

“Mayonnaise” is French for “Satan’s Jizz”.

Hell no. If a burger surprises me with it, I almost spit it out.

Mayo has no place in a civilized world, and may be a violation of UN Bio-weapons treaties.

Yuck. This is why I despise Checkers hamburgers. Globs and globs of yucky-ass mayo.

As a condiment, no thanks; but as something to put on a bun or bread before toasting, it rocks.
i toast or fry any bun or bread in mayo while making a sandwich. in that role, it rocks. I just can’t handle mayo raw though.

The best burger ever has mayonnaise on it. Mayonnaise and dill pickles (or dill pickle relish) are absolute requirements for a really good burger. Everything else is changeable without notice.

Having said that, however, a really good burger (with something mixed into the meat for flavor like a sauce of some sort) with nothing other than mustard and onions can be absolutely heavenly. But if they ever put me to death in any state that isn’t Texas, and I get my requested last meal, and I choose to eat a burger as part of that meal, damn certain I’ll get the mayonnaise/dill pickle version.

My order of preference:
Mustard
Ketchup and Mayo
Mustard and Mayo
Ketchup and Mustard
Mayo
Never ketchup by itself.

I am usually not a mayo fan, but a “good eats” episode that i saw several years ago had Alton doing his thing on burgers. The idea is to toast the buns and then add mayo to the bottom bun right before putting the hot burger down. The burger juices and the mayonnaise combine to great effect. I always have mayo on burgers now.
