I don’t have audio access to Michael Savage’s radio program, but here’s a link (you’ll have to watch a brief commercial) to Salon.com’s Daou Report that quotes Savage in his Jan. 15 program. Basically, Savage is spouting the godawful lie that rights given to anyone other than white heterosexual Christian males are rights that are taken away from said white heterosexual Christian males.
Where in the name of all that is decent and logical did these fucksticks get the idea that “rights” is a zero-sum situation!? Exactly how does a black lesbian Jewish woman also having all of the civil rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution do any harm whatsoever to white heterosexual Christian males? What rights do these guys give up – the right to hate? What is Christian about that? Before I gave up on Christianity (I’m probably weaker than I should be) I, too, was a white, heterosexual Christian male, and at no time did I ever feel that my rights were being eroded because I was required by law to treat other people who were not like me with dignity and respect.
But I’ll tell you what HAS eroded my civil rights. The Department of Homeland Security has eroded my civil rights, and hasn’t made me one damn bit safer in the bargain. People like Michael Savage who tingle in their nether regions at the very sound of the words “Homeland Security” have eroded my civil rights by forcing me to prove that I’m an American every time I apply for a damn job! Y’know, when I was a little kid, adults used to proudly proclaim that in the United States of Americabigawd, you did not need identity papers to leave your home town because this was Americabigawd, where people were free! Well, no more, thanks to shit-fer-brains knee-jerk wingnuts like Michael Savage!

Sadly, no, he receives air time because he has listeners. Lots and lots and lots of listeners, all of whom agree with him. I’ve been in the media biz all my adult life, and one thing I know unequivocally is that wack jobs are given bully pulpits for one reason and one reason only – people love 'em. Oh, some will say the “love to hate” them, but deep inside, they love them.
That is exactly the right they give up. And for many people, that pretty much is the cornerstone of their belief system. Hatred and the need to exploit and oppress others is a central part of many ideologies and religions.
I’ll grant as obvious that MS has shit for brains, but I’ve had to “prove that I’m an American every time I apply for a damn job!” for the last 20 years (i.e., every job I’ve ever had), predating the existance of “Homeland Security” as a department or phrase by at least 15 years, and political talk radio by a few years as well. It goes back at least to 1986 immigration reform. I never had a real job before 1986, so I can’t testify to the need to produce papers before that.
I listen to Savage for laughs. Nothing funnier that a complete maroon who actually thinks that he is the most intellegent person in existance.
I used to think that Savage was puting on an act, that nobody could REALLY be that stupid. Then I realiized that I was wrong, and to me that makes him all the funnier, the radio talk show equivalent to watching "Plan 9 from outer Space".
I especially love when somone tries to argue with him. He resorts to screaming, name calling and other tactics that I hadn't seen since I left the gradeschool playground behind.
I nearly wrecked my car laughing one time, when a caller tried to argue a point with Mikey Boy, and Mikey cut the guy off by asking if he had written a best selling book (yes a few of Savages books have made the list). The caller was understandably confused because his argument had nothing to do with having written a book. Savage began screaming "DID YOU WRITE A BESTSELLING BOOK" as if that were the end all argument, eventually giving himself a reason to hang up.
It gets even more ridiculous. His name used to be Michael Weiner - he changed it to Savage, probably because he thought it sounded badass.
His son however, kept the Weiner. His full name is Russell Goldencloud Weiner, creator of the vile-tasting “Rockstar” energy drink.
Goldencloud? What? As a matter of fact, Savage was by all accounts a left-leaning new-age type guy back in the 70s, a herbalist who supposedly* swam in the nude with Allen Ginsberg.* It was only in the 80s that he mutated, Hulk-style, into a savage.
Yeah, I’m getting so goddamn old that all that crap just sort of runs together on me sometimes. Anything before last week all happened at the same time, and it’s all the result of a right-wing conspiracy to take over the country, put me in a slave labor camp and keep all the good lookin’ wimmen to themselves. All I know is that there was a time when a man’s word and a handshake were good enough … what the fuck? I’m growin’ a goddamn grey jumpsuit right on my body!! Holy shit, there’s a bunch of pot-smokin’ kids on my lawn!!! Aw, shit, this is not good!
You see the same sorts of arguments from anti-drug lock-em-up-for-life extremists; they’ll often argue that the non-illicit-drug users are all individual victims of those who do, and tend to use the language of tit for tat when saying how drug users should “pay for their crime”.
I just sent a complaint to our local radio station about that guy last week!
His insane rantings are downright scary. I really can’t believe he has an audience other than people who are amused at his bizarre thought processes.
A couple of weeks ago, he was interpreting the bible- very interesting (not). I was thinking (while listening) that I might actually get to hear him have a stroke or heart attack!
Yeah, and I tried my “Fuck you; prove I’m not,” gambit back then but the HR guy was Indian and figured that if he had to prove he could work here legally so did I. Well, for that reason and because it was the law.
I’ve listened to him in the past, and happened to catch him on Monday, while trying not fall asleep on a long drive. He’s as demented as ever. But at least he attempts to use some form of logic and at least he gives callers that disagree with him a few seconds of airtime. He’s a scoudrel nonetheless, but I’ll raise you with Mark Levin . Levin is by far the biggest idiot on the airwaves today. He cuts off his liberal callers just when they’re about to make a solid point. He changes the argument around, makes weird noises, or calls them names then hangs up. Plus, he’s got masses of supporters who worship him. To me, he’s the biggest threat to an intelligent, well-informed public.
This is the Pit, right? Well, Michael “Wiener” Savage, Marc Levin, Charles Jaco ( I think that was him subbing for Savage yesterday), and the rest of their ilk, if they were here on SDMB would all be classified as TROLLS. Their whole raison d’etre is to get a rise out of people. That they are consistently able to do so is why they remain on the air. And we’ve got a local radio station taking up a spot on the dial that has nothing but these guys on all day long. (BTW, the station’s slogan is “Younger, smarter, better” – WTF?)
