Middle Earth FA65 D&D Game: Next Adventure – (11th)

Moved below.

Gwaelur smiles, “Yes yes. Strategic withdrawal…so you said. But I can take these boys to school.” He looks at Bitur and says “Baruk Khazâd!” and spins his large two handed axe in his hands.

Gwaelur will again use GWM and if the trolls are not badly damaged by the time it is his turn he will also use menacing again. If they are badly damaged he will hold off.

Now would seem a good time to actually action surge though to try to finished them off if he can.

The Ice Trolls are -1 to save for dex and -2 to make dex saves from the slow. They need 19s against Ghân. None came close, in fact the total of the 3d20 was only 22. Ouch. Everyone now has advantage to hit the 3 trolls.

Thoroncir charges Gummer, He hits and marks him and hits again for 31 damage. Gummer will have double disadvantage to hit anyone but Thoroncir.
Thoroncir action surges, hits twice more (only misses on a 1) adds another 26 for 57 total.

Bitur attacks Loo, He Bonus Actions Branding Smite and with advantage and being blessed he hits twice easily. so he does 2d8+12+2d6 radiant for 37 points. The trolls is now glowing from Faerie Fire and Radiance.

Gwaelur once again shows why Dwarven Fighters are so feared by their foes. He strikes Gummer Twice with his last 2 Menacing Strikes for 57 more or 114 total and Seji once who he crits for 33.
He then action surges and hits Gummer twice more finishing the troll. This or the Crit gives him a Bonus attack from Great Weapon Master which he uses to hit Sejo for 24 more. 57 total.

Ceol Uses his action surge with Great Weapon Master and hits 4 times. Loo is now on fire also. He does 114 damage which is enough with Bitur’s damage to drop Loo.

The party closes in around Seji.

Felareth Commands the remain Troll “Flee”, this invokes opportunity attacks.
He turns and runs from the U-shape of the 4 fierce warriors.

All 4 hit for 66 more. 123 total. The Ice Troll is bloody

Next round they make short work of this last troll. Meanwhile they hear the trolls beginning to take down the ice wall.

The party withdraws back to Cave 1 I believe.

That seems to be the consensus, yes. Thoroncir will be the last to withdraw, making sure no foe is able to attack his companions from behind.

“Yes, let us withdraw. I will continue on foot, and save the Fly spell for evacuating from the caves.”

Ghan congratulates the Fighters on their amazing prowess.
“It’s like watching lightning hitting a tree!” :fearful:

He reminds the party that now we can use Felareth’s clever magical taunt :sunglasses: (with musical accompaniment ) to lure some Trolls to their doom in the sunlight.
Ghan asks Felareth to organise the party (since Felareth knows his spell range etc.)
We want the Trolls to be affected - but also to get the party into a good position outside the Cave to cope with the remaining monsters.

To make sure I’m counting right, we now have the Ice Troll Chief and 8 regular trolls left?

Gilraen is still singing to maintain her Song of Estë. Reminder it has a 60’r.

So all of the party is healed and the horses are ready nearby.
You heard the sounds of walls of ice breaking and then Trolls screeching in pain. At least one bellowed, “So Cold!”

The trolls come into the front chamber, Felareth chants:

Cold old troll quiver in his hole
Stony old troll sulk in his lair
Chicken chief Kreg cower on his seat
Trolls hide in fear in stinky cold hole

Ceol accompanies him and Bitur provides Guidance.

The higher performance roll using the Mandolin adds up to 32.
The Chieftain charges the party that strategical withdraws outside. All the trolls fail and run towards the entrance but only Maukas was dumb enough to charge outside and turn to stone falling over.

The party notices that many of the trolls are frosty looking.
Also notice 7 trolls bunched up in the front entrance just out of the sun.

Ceol & Thoroncir mount up.

I’ll FINALLY unleash my Fireball at the first opportunity. [followed by another Slow in the following round]

Should I assume you used the Pearl of Power while waiting on the Trolls?

Ghan uses his Rod Taurgol to cast Wall of Thorns (using 6 charges) on the Trolls bunched in the entrance.
As soon as he can Ghan will also cast Entangle in the same area.
Also (if possible) Ghan would like to cast both spells just after Hejren’s Fireball (but before the Trolls can react.)

(I’m assuming both Healing Spirit and Faerie Fire have run out.)

Would you say the trolls are clumped together in a horde oh great and glorious DM?

If he can, Ghan will warn the party he is about to cast Wall of Thorns on the Cave entrance (and 20 feet further within.) Anyone in the area of effect takes a lot of damage…

Or, as we call it in one of my home groups: “Fireball Formation.”

Also, is the Ice Chief with the clump or did he charge outside? I can’t quite tell.

If he is separate Gwaelur probably wants to focus on him.

Ice Chief is outside, all by his lonesome thanks to our friend the Bard.

Astride Leofwin, his lance in hand, Ceol nods to Thoroncir. “Let us show this troll why the cavalry of Gondor and Rohan are so respected.” With a word, the Eorlingas urges his warhorse to charge the troll chieftain.

Realizing that Thoroncir, Ceol, and Gwaelur will probably be able to handle the Chief on their own, but being prepared to assist them if needed, Bitur pulls out his compound bow and starts firing at the Trolls in the entrance as they become entangled and fireballed.

I’ve been itching for a chance to test this thing out, he thinks to himself.

I now have a good situation in which to do so.

F|elareth will cast Faerie Fire on the Chief, then in future rounds cast Magic Missile on the trolls, using 2nd level slots to get four darts.

If the trolls haven’t run in2 rounds of this, he’ll switch to Fire Bolts.
