Middle Earth FA65 D&D Game: Next Adventure – (11th)

Ghan apologises. He doesn’t have anything that would ‘warp wood’.
Is there a keyhole? (Perhaps one of the **Chief’**s keys would fit…)

Looking at the map, Ghan doesn’t see any likely exits from this room to another part of the Cave complex.
So we can either try to get in here … or leave suitable guards at the door and hunt for the Galvorn (starting in the Chief’s room.)

(What is the notation marked on the map for the wall in room 11?)

Felareth examines the door. Does it have a metal lock and / or metal hinges?

(And I hate to say it but the marking on the east wall looks like a secret door …)

The S indicates a large secret door that Ghan was able to spot. It wasn’t very secret.

The heavy wooden door has no visible lock and appears to open in. Bitur is your best chance of getting through this door. You have a renown Engineer with you.

Gilraen suggests a Detect Magic might be in order if one of our spell casters have it.

“I can perform a ritual to detect the presence of magic, but it will take me ten minutes to perform.”

Felareth will begin a ritual casting of Detect Magic if no-one objects.

10 minutes is a long time, the trolls could be far away and making off with treasures and/or fully healed. Does anyone have Det Magic prepared for fast casting?

No one thought to bring the keys, huh?

Bitur do you see any way to bring this down?

I do, casting…

I assume that my inability to post from my 4+ hour morning work shift will NOT affect the timeliness of my decisions…

Ghan thought to search for the keys.
If there is a keyhole, it’s invisible.

Although defeating the last Trolls is worthy, Ghan still expects the Galvorn will be in or near the Chief’s room.

Hejren’s spell detects magic on the door. (with no keyhole)

“I could no doubt figure something out, and given enough time be able to open it. However, since we seem to be in a slight rush, I have something considerably faster in mind that will even bypass any magic locks…though, we should probably make sure the thing isn’t trapped first.”

Once the door is determined to be safe, Bitur will search for any mechanism to open it, and if he can’t figure any way to open it quickly will cast Knock.

After careful checking, the party finds no traps. Bitur is the best at investigating for traps but Hejren is able to provide her useful insights as a Historian and is a pretty sharp instigator herself.

The Knock spell opens the magic door. This brings the party to a small landing 8’x8’ before a tunnel the leads downwards. The tunnel is fairly tight for trolls but fine for the party members. It will be 2 wide here.

Let me know if this marching order is OK.

BiturTraps Gwaelur& stonework
Thoroncir Gilraen tracking
Hejren Ghân
Ceol Felareth

Marching order looks good to me.

I’m fine with that order.

That looks good to me, as well.

The tunnel runs about 130’, it drops you 40’ lower than the troll caves. You come to another door, this time stone. Also magical. (I assumed the Det Magic is still up)

My apologies, there is strong magic on the other side of the door. Very strong. Stronger than some of the magic the party carries and Gilraen’s Bauble and Gwaelur’s Helm Ghân’s Rod and Hejren’s Staff radiate strong magic.

“Hrm, magic. Never good when there is that much of it. You magic users, can you make anything of this?”

The marching order is fine with Ghan.

He is wary about the strong magic detected.
For comparison, Ghan’s Rod was used to cast both Wall of Thorns and Pass without Trace

He checks to confirm there are still signs the last two Trolls came this way (and if so, presumably they simply used strength to close the door behind them?)

This is a tricky decision!

For going on this way

  • we are at full health
  • the Trolls presumably came this way
  • we are here now (!)

For going back to the secret door in the **Chief’**s room:

  • the Chief was possibly more likely to hold the Galvorn

When it’s mentioned that there is strong magic being detected on the other side of the door, Bitur will instruct everyone to back up at least 60 feet as he starts inspecting the door for any traps or ways to open it.

If he finds a trap, he’ll discuss with the party what the options are. If he doesn’t find a trap and finds a way to open it, he’ll have the party close back around him and tell them to be ready for whatever is on the other side of the door.

If he can’t easily open it, he’ll retreat 60’ and nod at the party:

“Let’s do this!”

Cast knock.

Thoroncir agrees with the proposed marching order, and complies with Bitur’s request. His sword Arcirist is in his hand and his shield, emblazoned with the White Tree, Crown and Stars of Gondor, is ready on his arm. As ever he makes sure that Gilraen is, to the extent possible, out of harm’s way.

Heh, let’s do this indeed!
