Modern Family 10/17/12 The Butler's Escape

Did anyone catch what it said on the board in the classroom behind Cam?

I went back and took a picture for anyone that missed it and wants to see how it made it passed the censors.

I thought the episode was decent. But I was terribly distracted because apparently I was getting the audio feed for blind people, because when a character wasn’t talking, there was some voiceover guy saying “Luke is shaking his head” or “Phil has rolled off the bed.” It was very strange. Same thing happened with Suburgatory. I thought maybe it was ABC, but I haven’t seen anyone else mention it online. But it doesn’t seem to be a setting on my TV, since I watched American Horror Story right after and it didn’t have voiceover guy.

Even without the head in the way, it said “F Mr. Tucker.”

Mom… there’s something bothering me.

Yeah, me too, but I think it will be rich some day so we have to be nice to it.

Loved the bit with Cam & Mitchell on the phone- you’ve lost her, haven’t you?

-No, she’s right next to me.

-No she’s not, I can hear it in your voice. Look in the freezer. The door slides, it doesn’t open out.

My favorite bit was when Claire busted Mitchell for having her come over and do all the work:

“Why are you hugging?”

“Because I know if he had to call you for help, and heard as many insults as I know he had to hear, he had a worse day than me.”

“She was horrible, Cam.”

Lily coming out of her room and unplugging the keyboard that Cam was singing with had me in laughing hysterically.

This seemed like a weak episode to me. When they resort to Phil rolling around in a magic straitjacket for the funny, I get worried.

Is the actor who plays the older daughter involved in some other project somewhere that limits her participation in the show?

Loved the eye mask.

Her character is away at college. Other than holidays, the only real way they can work her into the show is by skyping her in for the odd scene here & there.

I thought this was better than the last few episodes, which were way too treacly.

I think the actor also has a lot of health problems.

Yes, Sarah Hyland had a kidney transplant in April.

This is the only episode I’ve seen since the pilot. I thought it was pretty funny, actually.

I think it is pretty cool use of Skype, FaceTime, whatever. It is the most honest and truthful use of videophone technology in a show or movie that I’ve seen. I’m still waiting for the next interaction between Phil & Claire and the roommate. I really hope they go back to that comedy gem.

But Cam as the music teacher seems like a dead end. I don’t see where they can go with it. Mitch’s work has always been used a a side prop, but with Manny and Luke and the Goth at the school, they will have to show Cam in action.

The “F” in front of Mr Tucker on the chalk board was supposed to be a 16th note (A musical notation), not an “F” that is how they rationalized it through censors I’m sure… Of course, NOBODY writes a 16th note like that… it was intentional and hysterical!

Almost as good as “Phil Is Not A Real Man”

I was surprised that the character got into college over the break. They had an excuse for keeping her at home at the end of last season. Maybe they really don’t expect her to be able to handle the role now.

It’s going to be tough for them to keep fitting her in this way. The whole scenario with the other daughter’s bad behavior and Claire’s solution just seemed forced. Not funny and not flowing from what we know about the characters already.

Didn’t they show her getting accepted into college in the final episode of last season? She was going to move in with Dylan but then got the college offer.

Loved this.

And Lily unplugging the keyboard.

Are Sarah’s medical problems that severe that they would limit how much she could work? My brother, who is 15 years older than Sarah, had a kidney transplant and was cleared to go back to his [~60-hour-per week, physically demanding] job within a few weeks, if not days.

I thought she was wait listed. It’s been a few months. Maybe I am remembering it wrong.
