Modern Family 11/7/2012

I imagine that each school has it’s own unique code of conduct for it’s employees, and it seems that I have read about situations where full fledged faculty members have been found out to be engaging in a sexual relationship with undergrad students and not been fired for it, although I don’t know if they were in a teacher-student relationship at the time that the sexual affair was taking place.

In general, things of this nature are a lot different in a university setting that what it would be in a high-school, both legally and ethically.

My favorite line was from Luke. Something about “Thanks to Obamacare you’re paying for it.”

Great episode. So, in an earlier thread people were saying that the actress playing Haley was facing some serious health problems which is why we’d been seeing so little of her this season so far. But now it seems like she’s back home - have her health problems been resolved and is she back for the rest of the season?

She received a kidney transplant in April. Presumably by the time the latest episode was filmed, she had healed enough to appear on the show.

I can’t say how realistic it was or wasn’t under the circumstances, but I was a bit disappointed that this is where they went with Haley’s story. I wanted her to defy expectations and actually do well in college.

I do hope in the long run the writers have an arc in mind for Haley other than being a hopeless screw-up forever.

It was a funny episode though.

I assumed they wanted to keep Sarah Hyland in the show, and not just in little appearances over Skype or iChat. I can’t think of a better way than expelling her from college to do that, while respecting the progression of time.

I think that’s a reasonable assumption.

I don’t think they portray Haley as a hopeless screw up. She’s just a kid who is more concerned about being popular than with school. If anything is real life… that is. Are you old enough to have been to a 10-year high school reunion? For some people; high school was their life; then you look at them in ten years; and they’re still living in their same town; talking about the glory days. Everyone who’s been out of high school knows people like this (or are one themselves).

They can just have her attend the local community college (didn’t Claire say they planned on having her do just that now). They could even enroll her in a vocational program like cosemetology or culinary arts or allied health (there’s a terifying prospect).

Haley could always go back to her original plan and take a GAP year.

That was pretty much Al Bundy’s character on Married With Children, no?

I don’t think they mentioned where, just that Haley could ‘get a job and take some classes’ or something like that.

I really liked the episode, yeah.

After reading about actress Ariel Winter’s (“Alex” on Modern Family) ongoing family drama, and subsequently finding out she is just 14 years old, it kind of shocks me to learn that there is a 9 year difference in ages between her and co-star Sarah Hyland (“Haley”) who I recall is now 23.

If I had to guess, I would have said that the two were probably about 3 or 4 years apart, (which is what I think is supposed to be the difference in their character’s ages) not nearly a full decade.

And about how they could throw that speedball by you.
