Modern Family 3-23

In Season 1, Episode 12 “Not in My House”, we can see that Mitchell’s Prius has California plates.

I’m not sure how I developed this impression, but I thought it was fairly obvious that the show is set in Santa Monica. Maybe because I’m always recognizing the locations they film at.

I like how Jay got toasted on the gaytinis. I’ve gotten wasted on a few gaytinis in my day… because they’re delicious and potent!

How can the “actress” that plays Lily always be so calm? Do they infuse her with Robitussin before filming?

And then she just shrugs when she can’t find him.

Uncleses.

“If you knew Frankie Valli, you’d be cracking up right now!”

“How do you guys do it? I thought cops could drink.”
I’ve been a huge fan of Ed O’Neill since the MWC days, and he’s just as funny, or funnier, in this show.

:smack: Doh! I didn’t get that until just now. I was thinking it was an old man’s house so it probably didn’t smell great in there so he held his breath. Geez Enright! Use your brain!

That was my first reaction too, so it kinda diminished the impact of the otherwise excellent gag.

Absolutely nit-picky trivia: they’ve mentioned a friend named “Longines” before, but this is the first time he’s appeared. In the credits, his name is spelled “Longines”, the same as the watch – which I always thought was pronounced “lawn jeans”. “Longinus”, however, is the legendary name of the Roman centurion at Jesus’ crucifixion – and I always thought that was pronounced the way they pronounced it in the show (lawn jy nus). So I think the writer’s have misspelled their own character’s name … if that’s possible.

Longines is pronounced correctly as “lawn jeans”; the joke on the show is that it’s being mispronounced ‘Lawnjinus’.

He has appeared before - he was the guy who sprayed Phil with perfume at the mall, followed by the usually mild-mannered Phil going off on him. He wasn’t named at the time, but at the end of the episode Cam said something like “That was Longines on the phone. Some crazy person terrorized him at work.” I was hoping he’d be in the Harp Attack episode so he & Phil could meet up again.

And in Hellboy, John Hurt pronounced it Lawn-gy-nus, with a hard “g”.

It’s a pretty subtle joke if the name is only ever spelled in the credits.

Actually, he was in an episode before this one; he was in Season 2, Episode 10: “Dance Dance Revelation”. He was the salesman at the mall who sprayed Phil with some cologne – Phil got angry (Jay had been badgering him about not taking up for himself0, grabbed the bottle, and started spraying poor Longines over and over, while pursuing him through the store. Classic “Modern Family” moment!

There are competing standards for pronouncing Latin.

The traditionalists would say [lɔn dʒaɪ nəs] (lawn JY ness) (JY as in “gyroscope”)
The historicists would say [lɔn gi nus] (lawn GHEE nooss) (GHEE as in “geese”)

Hellboy’s pronunciation is mixed, which is also common.

Sorry, still not clear about this. Did Luke hold his breath because he thought that there was no oxygen in the house?

Yes.

~ahhh~ I’m going to breath a sigh if relief now that I’m not the only one who completely missed that joke. Too bad though; because it’s funny as hell.

Looks at Enright’s location Bless your heart!

(I’m south of Macon.)

The first :frowning: had me puzzled - the seconded :frowning: has me :confused::confused:

why is this so :(?

Because they thought Back to the Future Lloyd was even more awesome, and learning they were mistaken is disappointing.
