Most Despised/Loved Cartoon Character

Oh, wow. The loves list:

Warner Brothers: Bugs, in Freleng/Jones form, post 1946 or so. Before that, he was just miscellaneously obnoxious. Daffy and Porky, ditto. Both of these characters underwent almost complete transformations - Daffy becoming the neurotic, self-delusional, craven little twerp we love, and Porky dropping slightly into the background to beocme one of the better second-bananas ever invented. Ralph Philips, the little dreamer; I believe Watterson acknowledged him as one of the influences for Calvin. Foghorn Leghorn, Dawg, Henery Hawk, and Miss Prissy Bob McKimson’s only really good cartoons; although they became repetetive it was damn funny. Sylvester

Disney: The villains. Especially Lucifee.

Other 50s-60s Bullwinkle, Rocky, Boris Badinov, Natasha Fatale, Mr. Peabody - all brilliant. Pink Panther, who ought to be remembered better than he is. Tom & Jerry, better in the original Hanna Barbera cartoons for MGM (that’s where they got their start - with big budgets they did great stuff); interesting but not as funny in their mid-60s Chuck Jones incarnation

Nothing from the 70s or 80s, with the possible exception of Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato, which I haven’t seen since I was 12. But I remember thinking it really, really cool, great action with at least a little complexity.

Contemporary: Daria, the best offshoot of the Simpsons. Buttercup (favorite episode: Beat Your Greens, when the Earth is attacked by broccoloid invaders) Dexter, of the laboratory. Courage the Cowardly Dog and Muriel Bagge (god I love that show). Lupin III Newly redubbed, now on Adult Swim. A riot.

The despise list is smaller to type but includes many, many more characters.

Warner Brothers: Pepe, for the reasons mentioned; and Tweety. I know he’s supposed to be annoying, but, ah, I think you made your point, Mr. Freleng. Back off.

Disney: The heroes, every last one of them. Insipid, sacharine, intolerable.

Paramount: God, these cartoons were annoying. Can you imagine anyone actually fighting over Olive Oyl, fercryinoutloud? Everyone else was just tedious, beginning with Popeye. (Although occasionally he did say funny stuff under his breath.)

Hanna Barbera: Pretty much the entire oevre. Watch Boomerang and you realize - wow, this stuff really sucked. There is no reason other than nostalgia for anyone to watch this.

But the winner for most contemptible cartoon in animation history-

Unrevived on any cable network, even the most desperate for content!
Unmourned by animation fans!
Unfunny even by the standards of an 8-year-old in 1942!

It’s

Woody Woodpecker!

God, what a loser. The entire output of Walter Lantz (Chilly Willy, etc.) ought to be burned. I hated it when I was 8, and it’s not getting any better.

Honorable mentions to: the equally unmourned Mighty Mouse and Casper

I’ve got to vote some more.

Favorite: George of the Jungle

Would be favorite if only I could see more: Worker and Parasite

Most despised: Olive Oil from Popeye.

Most loved: Taz from Taz-Mania. Meet his family in this series. I bought some of the videos.

I noticed a whole lot of electricity between her and Green Lantern.
They are gonna make a great couple.

To the “love” list, you’ve gotta add Goofy. Despite his own serious limitations, he always completes his goals (even if in a haphazard way). And he’s unflappable and optimistic.

Love-

Strong Bad
The rest of the Homestarrunner characters
Dexter
Ren and Stimpy

Hate-
Jonny Bravo

Loved:
The Powerpuff Girls. Perfect mix of superheroic omnipotence and inherently human inner failings. And they’re pretty as the dickens.
Hank Hill. Just the fact that he’s able to keep smiling despite having to live through endless stomach-churning crap (could we please put a rest to that narrow urethra issue already? Pretty please?) gives him serious points in my book.
The old Bart Simpson. Stupid “bad boy” image (IMHO, he was too pathetic in that regard to ever deserve that title) overshadowed a lot of good he did. He actually took a bullet for Lisa, remember, and for something that wasn’t his fault at all.
Nearly everyone on Animaniacs. Knew their roles and played them to perfection. Made what would’ve been a pretty good sketch comedy great.
The Amoeba Boys. For crying out loud, give them a new episode already! Their comedic bungling and absolute non-adherence to the qualities you expect a villain to have are perfect for this type of nonserious show.
Dexter and Dee Dee. This is one of those odd couple duos that, every time they get together, you just know something fun and crazy is going to happen.
The Roadrunner & Wile E. Coyote. How do two characters stretch essentially the same gag for dozens of episodes, and still draw laughs? I don’t know…but seeing it actually work was a joy to behold. Occasionally imitated, never once close to duplicated.
Pip. Because you’re not supposed to love him, and I don’t care. A nice kid trying to get by in a town full of worthless ungrateful jerks…I can relate.

Hated
Any and all “jerk” characters. Eric Cartman, Beavis & Butthead, that little twerp on Baby Blues, Dolph, Jimbo, & Kearney (it’s a travesty that they’ve NEVER had to face the music), most of the folks on Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Eustace Baad, etc. Yes, I’ve heard all the rationalizations…and you know what, I don’t care, they still bug the hell out of me.
Jerry the mouse. Actually, most classic cartoon mice. The prototype for D J & K.
C. Montgomery Burns. Geez, is he the God of Deux Ex Machina or something? Every time I see him on the screen, I just know something unbelievably ridiculous and ham-handed is going to happen that episode.
7th season and after Bart Simpson. How the mighty have fallen. He’s not even a decent rebel now; he’s just another loser without a life. (Hitting just a tad too close to home, if you ask me. )
About a zillion hillion jillion anime characters. Know what’s impressed me most about Initial D so far? I haven’t yet seen anyone that I want to throw off a tall building. (And as far as I’m concerned, “OVA” stands for “Absolutely No Entertainment Value Whatsoever.”)
Gil. Oh, great, just what The Simpsons needed, a stammering doormat who never succeeds at anything. I’d give the obligatory “what were they smoking” comment, but frankly, I can’t imagine anything strong enough to get a sane person to green-light this one.
Elmyra Duff. I actually liked Montana Max more than this get-away-with-murder twit, for crying out loud.
Comic Book Guy. Internet sucks. Internet people suck. You don’t care what anyone thinks about the show. You’re immune to criticism. We get it. MOVE ON!

And one character I have mixed feelings for, Mojo Jojo. I know he’s a cool baddie, and his redundant/overexplanatory speech, and of course the dependable not-really-as-smart-as-he-thinks schtick, are perfect for this show. But he’s being seriously overused to the point where he’s drawing attention away from other villains who deserve a shot. I also believe that even a comic heel has to take a break from getting his butt kicked once in a while if he’s going to maintain any credibility as a heel.

Also Lisa Simpson. I agree that she can get insufferable at times, but I think the unbelievable amount of hatred heaped on her is a bit uncalled for, especially with the other characters on that show who are beyond redemption (I’m talking to you, Dolph, Jimbo, and Kearney!).

Daria was spun-off from Beavis & Butthead, not the Simpsons.

EEEk! Thanks, I didn’t catch that mistake. Wow.

Maybe I was too young, too innocent to understand the obvious horror that is Scrappy Doo, but he always seemed kinda, I don’t know, lovable.

My favorite cartoon has always, and will always be: Bugs Bunny. He’s simply the best. I also hold a special place in my heart for Felix. He was such a wonderful cat. Next to Felix I place The Ambiguously Gay Duo, who make me laugh so hard when they come on. Has anyone mentioned them yet?

I hate JFK in Clone High. I watch the show, he comes on, I turn it off. He’s never funny, and his imitation Kennedy voice grates on me… I also hate Fred Flintstone. Call me a heretic, but the man is a slobby loser. Barney should’ve been the star of that show… Course then it’d be The Rubbles…

Hey Peyote Coyote - I know Wolverine has been in various incarnations of the X-Men cartoon but what cartoons have Guy Gardner and Rorshach been in? I’d love to see a Watchmen cartoon but I’m, uh, pretty sure it doesn’t exist.

Oh, almost forgot:

Hated, hated, HATED: The Scots on Samurai Jack. Particularly the Utterly Predictable Shrew ™.

Completely ruined the show for me. I’m going to have nightmares about those trash-spewing slugs for the next five years.

I don’t think i have any “hates” as such. if I didn’t like th’ show, I didn’t watch.

But, my likes/loves include (no specific order):
Bugs Bunny
Daffy Duck
Darkwing Duck (and his nemesis Steelbeak)
Duckman (and sidekick Cornfed Pig)
Eric Cartman
Pinky & the Brain
Goofy
Scrooge McDuck
Ludwig Von Drake
Eek! the Cat (and nemesis Shark Dog, and those scientist guys)
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Spy Dogs (in general)

Loves:
Zim & G.I.R.
Daffy Duck (early wacko and feet of clay versions)
original Jonny Quest
Ed from Cowboy Bebop
The Dodo
Mr. Fujisawa and Shayla Shayla from El-Hazard
Mr. Peabody
Dog from Foghorn Leghorn shorts

Hated:
entire Scooby cast, esp. Scrappy
Pixie & Dixie
Grape Ape
The Flintstones
Family Guy esp. the dumb father and the dumber teen son with THAT voice.
Homer Simpson
Beavis & Butthead
Speed Buggy, an entire character built around a speach impediment. Is this where Adam Sandler got the idea from?
Minmei
Snarf? The “humorous” sidekick on Thundercats.
All things Disney
Shirt Tales
Care Bears
Smurfs
Monchichis (My sister used to subject the household to these last four when she was little)
Michigan J. Frog. Dave Chapelle nailed this one trick pony on his show last week, heh heh heh.

If there are any dopers out there with flash or other animation skill I think the time is right for us to realize the dream of an animated fight to the death between Scrappy Doo and the chicken hawk!

It’s gazoo.
And who were the herculoids?

Cisco: Sorry about that. I got carried away and named several comic book characters.

Bong: Thanks for the correction. The Herculoids were a family – father, wife & son – who lived on a planet filled with strange beings. They had quite a collection of pets: a flying dragon that could shoot laser beams from its eyes, a rhinoceratops, a giant rock gorrilla, and two giant amoebas. Man, I loved that show when I was a kid.

Under “Favorites” add Deputy Mayor Calico Briggs from SWAT Kats, The Radical Squadron. Not the usual “fainting maiden”.

LOVE: Boris and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I have based my life on their teachings.

HATE: Thundercats…really that show just blew. Panthro ?

The UTTERLY UNEXPLAINABLE unless you are Canadian:
Rocket Robinhood
Hercules and Newton
Max the 2000 year old mouse

…words fail me, crappy but beloved.

Love: Yogi Bear.

Hate: Herman and Catnip.

Love: Wimpy

Hate: Olive OIl at her worst. “Barnicle Bill the Sailor” and the one with “Powder Room…It sure is dark in here…KABOOM”
