IT is really not so hard.

(Contrary to the teasing “skepticism” that the Weird Earl’s title may raise in you, YES, “the Ball” really does change color if you manage to click on it anywhere.)
I did it, took a few tries, but it’s possible.
Are the changes same for everyone? Green-Blue-Yellow…

Have you noticed that if you right click on it the ball and string get bigger?
and I find that I have to click on the exact center of the ball to change its color.
Yes, I’ve noticed the same first three changes that yo did. It then goes to different shades of green before going red.

Nope. Violet, puke yellow, grey, chartreuse, fuchsia. Could be because I made it bigger.
I only got it once in small mode, but it changed to a dark red.
No, but I’ve noticed that when I right-click it, the ball and string stop following my cursor, allowing me to position the arrow underneath it to where a double-click gets it for me (first click releases the ball; second click catches it).
I’m on a windows machine… if right click on it I get the flash menu.
However when I press the <alt> key it tacks the string to the background, and I can move my mouse anywhere. It’s really easy to click the ball that way!
Then yours behaves differently from mine.
Later: No, I must have hit right click and then Zoom In about simultaneously. That does what I said. Just right click DOES tack it in place.
After Zoom In you can also Zoom Out
orange, crappy yellow, pink, green, black: random order, I guess.
Also, if you move the mouse outside the screen, it “tacks” the string to the side of the window, and you can move in and click the ball easily.
Annoying game. 
So when you need a break from ball and string you can try to Circle the Cat

I just spent way to long trying to click a ball on a string.
I hate that damn cat.
I got the cat pretty quick, fourth or fifth try, then again on the next try.
