My glorious life as a fat person!

Opalcat, I weigh 295 pounds, (down from 330, thankyouverymuch) and I’m with gobear on this one. You have it ass backwards, girl…letting your weight keep you from exercising is insane. However difficult it has become, giving in and using it as an excuse will only make it more so. The ONLY way to combat it is to just do whatever you can do.

There was a point not long ago, when my ankles and knees were all so trashed that I was reduced to “dancing” while I sat on a stool. So that’s exactly what I did.

You are, if I’m not mistaken, much younger than me. (I’m 44). If you think it’s bad now, and you let it immobilize you, you will be a complete cripple by the time you’re 50.

No judgment, just reality.

I am a size 12 now…down from a size 14/16 (thanks to Slimfast dieting and exercise)and I know what it feels like, like a lot of posters here. A couple years ago I had to go buy a new bathingsuit and ended up going to Wal-Mart. All that they had in my size were hideous creations with giant skirt thingies around the middle. The one I DID end up buying was a hot pink Barbie-like one piece that I hate. I have gotten used to the fact over the years that the cute clothes I see in Cosmo will NEVER look good on me so I end up wearing mostly jeans and tees…rarely skirts or dresses because none of the ones I like look good on me at all because of my weight. Keep fighting the good fight, sista. We’ll all get there some day. Don’t let the assholes of the world get you down. It almost makes me wish there was such a thing as a Time Machine ™ so I could go back to Rennassaince times and take all my ‘fat’ friends with me. Remember…in those days…it was the bigger the better and skinny women were almost non-existant.

To continue the wacky resurrecting hijack (and I was going to post this when I saw it on the first page) The Blue Castle is one of my favoritest books of all time. I was so excited when I saw someone else quote it!

In the same vein, in “Anne of Green Gables” skinny is, sometimes, a negative physical attribute of Anne in comparison to Diana’s plumpness. However, I think we can see transition as Diana envies Anne’s “slimness”, too.

Um. I’m not saying it shouldn’t be done, I’m just saying that this is one of the reasons why it is hard for obese people to lose weight. I’m not whining.

You don’t have to be large to put up with bad knees or injuries. I have a bad knee I got in the military that bugs me when I run. I run untill it bugs me and then walk, or stop. I also smoked a pack and a half of cigarettes a day for nearly a decade of my life so that compounds it. I can run a mile without stopping now. Used to be able to run for only one minute without my lungs wanting to burst and my knee hanging by a tendon.

I was in bed all day yesterday, and slept a good 14 hours after a bit too hard of a workout on squats at the gym friday. Never work your quads really hard and go bowling for 3 hours. I couldn’t hardly get out of bed to get a glass of water.

Another hijack, while we’re on it. Funny thing about message boards. Stoid, I figured you were my age (late 20’s). I did a double take when I read this! Amusing how we set up mental images of posters we read…only to have them be completely different in reality!

Carry on…

Not to get in the way of this discussion, but I’ve created a discussion about ‘The Blue Castle’ in response to the people who commented.
Here

Eh… yeah I know. I’ve had bad knees all my life. Being heavy has made them much worse. Many (most?) people who are obese develop joint problems in their legs whether or not they had them before.

People are misunderstanding my post right and left. I was simply saying that the medical conditions that result from obesity are in themselves their own obstacle to be overcome in the quest for weight loss. It is harder for an obese person to exercise because of various conditions that the obesity has caused.

I never said that only obese people have these problems. I never said that obese people shouldn’t exercise because of those problems. I’m simply saying that those problems are another reason why obese people have a hard time losing weight.

That’s all. Really. No other motives, no other messages. Quite simple, really.
