I never watch the Super Bowl (or any ball sports) and for years have played a little game with myself after the World Series and the Super Bowl: how long can I go without finding out who won?
Now any Doper who isn’t watching the game can play along, and we can have a little competition. In the spirit of the way I have conducted this little game with myself, I offer the following rules:
You may not actively avoid learning the outcome of the game. You should follow all your usual habits and patterns of behavior. For instance, if the home page on your browser would normally show the score, you can’t change it tonight to keep from seeing it tomorrow morning.
If on your morning drive, you normally listen to a radio station that would report on the game, you can’t change stations.
You can’t tell friends or cow-orkers not to talk to you about the game.
When you have found out who won, come here and post the date and time you first heard the outcome. Whoever is last wins. (I suppose it could be some time before we have a definitive winner.)
I don’t give a shit who wins or when I find out. I only found out a couple of days ago that Da Bears were even IN the Superbowl, which is about how much attention I pay to football. I suppose if they win I might hear a bunch of car horns outside. Otherwise, I don’t care.
Wow. I’m glad I didn’t pay attention to the TV when the news was on, because that means I am still eligible to play. I’ll probably hear on the radio tomorrow morning, if my sister doesn’t tell me tonight.
(Seriously, I’m impressed. Someone who’s managed to avoid hearing about the Colts’ move to Indianapolis for, what, thirty years? Probably will never in his lifetime find out who won this year’s Super Bowl. We should declare a winner right now and get on with our lives …)
Cool game, but I can’t play because I asked my husband about it this morning. Sometimes I like to feign interest in the bizarre stuff that captures his attention.
However, if I hadn’t asked, I don’t think I’d have heard yet.
BTW, I need to caution anyone against posting the Super Bowl result in a spoiler, because info inside spoiler tags appears in the clear in the e-mail notices.
I saw some football guy on the cover of the newspaper this morning but I couldn’t tell you what team he played on, I just flipped past him to the interesting articles. Oh, I am going to be good at this game. There is only one person in my office that might be remotely interested in sports and even then I think that hockey is his sport de jour.
Over lunch today, around 12:20. Most of the SB-related discussion was about the poor quality of the commercials this year, but one fellow I was eating with said “Mostly, I was just rooting for the [team name] to lose”, and the other fellow said “Was that before or after it became apparent they were going to?”.
And yes, I do remember what team he said, I just figured this thread would be a lousy place to spoil it.
Has someone been watching commercials for “How I Met Your Mother” or something? Apparently, the synopsis for tonight’s brand-new episode is, “When a funeral prevents the gang from watching the Super Bowl live, the group makes a pact not to find out who won before watching the game together the following night.”
