Good stuff, but no laugh out loud moments… I don’t really believe that someone who looks like Marlee Matlin would shack up with Earl, but it was still good.
Surprising of Earl to stand up for Joy like that – knowing what she meant to her family – but believable. We’ve been developing his character is this direction for a while. But. . . TWO YEARS!? In JAIL!? with RALPH?!
Also, the chain of translators in the courtroom? Awesome. ASL -> Mandarin -> Crazy African Guy English.
And Earl’s 911 tapes! “She just torched a kitten!”
And to head off the inevitable Catalina question: “Gracias por ver nuestro programa. Los vamos a extrañar este verano. ¿No te parece cómico que Earl piensa que yo le estoy diciendo cuanto yo odio a Joy, pero en realidad le estoy diciendo cuanto los quiero?”
“Thanks for watching our show. We’re gonna miss y’all this summer. Doesn’t it seem funny to you that Earl thinks I’m telling him how much I hate Joy when I’m really telling him how much I love y’all?”
Wait! I think I missed something! I feel like there was a big Earl rip off. I was promised a one hour season finale of Earl. Did it not start at 8:00? (Eastern time, that is.) Did it not end at 8:45, throwing me immediately into an episode of The office, which I find oddly compelling, but can’t say that I actually LIKE?
Another good episode. Is this really the season finale? If so, that was a mean cliff-hanger.
The minute the Mandarin speaking lady started translating, I started thinking about a classic Lucy episode when they were in Europe. I was actually expecting Catalina to end up involved.
Poor Randy, what will he do? I guess he can give up the apartment and move back home.
At least Crabman’s hair perked back up. I am actually tired of Earl doing so much for Joy. I don’t think he owes her so much. Of course, in this case, I guess he did it for the kids and Crabman* as much as Joy.
Aww! Thanks, Bambi Hassenpfeffer for the translation of Catalina’s comments. Wow, that is neat!! lol Sorry, don’t mean to sound so juvenile, but I do love this show; I only wish I hadn’t just discovered it earlier this year.
The tag-team lawyers were great! Anyone else catch (LOL) Nescobar taking the pencil?! What will happen to Earl in jail?! With a … sockful of batteries?! Ye Gods! Looks like Crabman, Joy and family will be okay, but what about Randy – what will happen to him?! I totally wasn’t expecting Earl to take the fall for Joy, but … well, it was completely within character for him, especially considering just how far he has come.
It’s definitely going to be an interesting season come the fall, that’s for sure. I’ll be looking forward to it.
No problem. Anything for someone who suffered through Enterprise with the rest of us.
I replayed that segment a couple times to get the words exact. It’s a running gag on this show – every single time Catalina speaks Spanish to one of the principals, it’s always a comment to the audience about the show. Last year’s season finale had a similar thanks for watching, see ya next year thing.*
I can’t believe they actually sent him to jail. I’m honestly left wondering how they’ll resolve this.
*I poked around on Google to find the other three times: In “Barn Burner”, the 11th episode of the first season it was Quiero agradecer a todo el público latino que nos acompaña cada semana, y para los que no son latinos les felicito por aprender otro idioma, which means “I want the thank the entire Latino audience that joins us every week, and for those of you who are not Latino, congratulations on learning another language.”
And in last year’s season finale, “Number One”, Con esto, concluimos nuestra primera temporada de Earl. Estamos muy agradecidos con su acompañamiento, y anticipamos verlos el próximo otoño!", which is “With this, we conclude our first season of Earl. We’re very grateful for your company and expect to see you next fall.”
Finally, in the 8th episode of this season, “Robbed a Stoner Blind” (the claymation one), Esto iba a ser yo sacándome la cabeza y limpiando polvo con ella, pero los dibujos animados son tan costosos, ¡así mejor me puedes ver bailar!, which is “This was gonna be me taking off my head and dusting with it, but animation is so expensive it’s better you see me dance!”
This episode seemed much more “vintage Earl” than others as of late … really enjoyed this one. I especially appreciated the nod to Boogie Nights (snapping firecrackers going off while Night Ranger’s Sister Christian played in the background).
For those of us who only started the show this season, having watching just a smattering of earlier episodes, who is this Nescobar, why is he in jail, and where does he fit in the Earl universe?
Thanks again, Bambi for the translations of the other Catalina messages to the audience. I had no idea that was what was going on! Doesn’t surprise me, though.
As to who Nescobar a-lop-lop is … I’m not completely certain how Earl first came into contact with him; he is a resident of Camden County, though. I think Earl met him when he was “teaching” an English as a second language class. Hmm… he may also be part of a 12-step group too, because he’s got kleptomania, especially for pencils and other writing utensils. The ESL class episode is outrageously funny, btw; of course Earl’s teaching method leaves a lot to be desired and he teaches the students all sorts of stuff they shouldn’t be learning. I do think he’s met Nescobar in other places, like AA or something like that - the 12-step program. And of course probably they’ve seen each other at the Crab Shack or Club Chubby.
Nescobar wasn’t in jail, he was the African translator. Earl met him when he was teaching English as a second language. Nescobar was in the class and has popped up a few times in other episodes.
So sad seeing Randy holding the walkie-talkie in bed when Earl was gone.
I loved the Boogie Nights shout-out. And I too felt robbed after hearing about the one hour season finale- I only got 67% of what I had been promised. Curses!
They also did a little Dukes of Hazzard shout-out.
Earl was doing the voice-over and was saying something like, “with Joy in jail, and the boys in whatever. . .” then, they did a DoH style freeze-frame with Joy sitting behind the glass.
His best friend from the days of Earl being a criminal. Even then Earl was just basically a thief and a dirtbag, Ribisi was more psychotic, more prone to physical violence. He also appears to be dumber than Earl, more like Randy level stupidity but vicious.
This episode had some classic moments, and I’m not ashamed to tell you that I got a little misty at the end, when Earl was being walked to his cell. Then I saw Ralph, and thought, “This is not going to be good.”
Poor Crabman. His hair just kept getting flatter and flatter, the kids taped Mr. Turtle to the ceiling-window, and he served Ruby a still-live crab.
And Dog the Bounty Hunter, followed by an A&E commercial touting the new season.
Now, for a dose of reality…wouldn’t Ruby get in trouble for knowingly letting Earl commit perjury? Joy did it, Earl and Ruby know she did it, but Ruby let Earl take the fall for Joy.
I’m thinking he won’t spend two years in jail. Remember all the talk about character witnesses? I’m thinking he’ll come up for parole, and a bunch of people he done wrong and then made amends to will come forward and Earl will be back on the street.
