Surgery is only recommended if you (a) can’t get an erection, (b) you can get one but it’s too crooked to use, or © you can get one but it hurts too much to use.
The surgery can quite easily be worse than the problem. If you start to experience pain with this, go to a urologist and talk about ultrasound treatment. It works. Kinda fun, too.
I used to have a 45 degree bend to the left, and I have pictures, but I’d get banned if I posted or linked to them, so just imagine a penis shaped like a boomerang and you’ve pretty much got it.

Another gay man checking in. I haven’t seen thousands of dicks (maybe a hundred or so, and that’s counting Mardi Gras), but the ones I have encountered tend to curve one way or the other. It is perfectly normal.
Off-subject, but on the JDT thing somebody brought up, I’m curently reading Circumcision: A History of the World’s Most Controversial Surgery, by David L. Gollaher. Interesting book which comes out against the operation. (and it gets stares on the Metro, too :D) I don’t care, they taste better trimmed.
