Well, yah, Spaz, but when you’re talking about white privilege in the context of this election it’s a bit difficult to be bipartisan, no? I originally got the article in question forwarded as an email and I made an effort to track down the original source (the thing is [del]nearly[/del] viral at this point) in order to allow more in the way of context, 'cuz I’m fair like that. The author is a well known writer who specializes in race relations in America so it’s useful to know that and be able to see how that one pretty pointed article fits in with his overall worldview. I definitely suggest checking out the followup article which expands on his general views and puts a better frame on the original article.
I think Wise is a very nuanced writer overall, judging from his blog posts–he has points to make but not so much of axes to grind, y’know? I think I need to get hold of his book as well.
I like the second article a lot better. My problems with the first, like I said, are mainly stylistic–it reads like a list of talking points and “white privilege” is repeated twenty-five times. That’s where the beating the point to death impression comes from. I really hope he dashed that article off right before bed because it’s composed like a fifteen-year-old’s homework.
But the second article shows what he can do. And he can write. Why he chose not to for the viral article the world may never know.
Evenin’ Y’all! Another day of learnin’ over. We are discussin’ the basics of a customer call. Ummm… YAWN Anywho, I’m home, dinner is et and a bloody mary or three is/are about to be consumed just cause.
Welcome back Puggy. We can’t wait to hear all about Italy. You got a MMP comin’ up right?
Good to know about the metal pan for the Death Chicken - I’ll pass that on to my mom. She made it yesterday also (she added carrots) and said she didn’t like the non-crisp bacon. But other than that, she declared it a keeper, too.
Daughter was feeling iffy last night and puked at school today, and blamed it on the chicken. Except we all ate it and no one else got sick. So she’s conceded that it probably wasn’t Death.
I’m going to build a lasagne for tomorrow’s dinner. But I don’t have enough of the big noodles, so I’m going to make it using pasta - it’ll be more of a pasta casserole, but that’s fine - it’ll still be yum.
Other than that, it’s just another day in paradise. I’m glad it’s a short week, tho my first day back wasn’t bad. Still, is it Firday yet??
I’m feeling rather uninspired today as far as ideas for dinner go.
So far, it looks like Italian sausage will be involved in some way, shape or form… but other than that, I got nuffin. Any suggestions for something tasty I could make that involves the snausages somehow? Or a suitable side dish that doesn’t involve too much fuss?
I’ve got a pretty well-stocked pantry, the grocery store is a 5 minute walk away and I’ll eat anything that isn’t nailed down or capable of running away from me… so anything goes.
Welcome back, Puggy! Sounds like you’re exhibiting signs of a great vacation. Our next MMP opening is November 3. I think an MMP about Italy to distract us from the election would be marvelous. Does that work for you?
I’ll have to try a metal pan next time I make Death Chicken, too. (Are we experiencing Death Chicken: the next wave?)
I’m not having problems with the board, LiLi, but I’ve only been on for a little while.
Hope Petercat shows up soon, Spaz.
Too bad on no TVLand tonight, Pie. But having a breakfast tomorrow is good news, no?
I liked the follow-up article better, too, *Smartie *and Spaz. Reminded me of a book I used in one of the best papers I wrote in grad school. Lent it to one of my old roommates, I think, and never got it back.
Off to replace ceiling fan blades and start putting my bed frame back together…
We’ll see if I can do it by myself…
Back later with updates.
ETA: sorry, no ideas for your dinner, Muppet. Not even sure about mine at the moment…
Baked ziti! (Or whatever pasta you have.) Browned Italian sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spaghetti sauce, mozzarella. Garlic toast! I just wrote that down for my menu list for next week.
I bet you never knew that I left. But I did. So much for my day off. I got a call at about 1 p.m. for a dinner tonight.
Afterwards I had to stop at the grocery store to pick up a few things so I decided to get chinese takeout from them. And MY MOUTH IS ON FIRE!!! I had to quit eating it because it was just too hot.
Yes, you’re correct GT, breakfast is a good thing. Remind me of that, though, when I’m grumpy about getting up too early tomorrow.
Daughter and I built tomorrow’s lasagne - it’s gonna be yum! We used 2 kinds of pasta, including one tri-color variety. Lots of cheese, lots of fungus. Can’t wait for tomorrow!!!
Dishwasher is washing dishes. We’re watching TV. Life is good. I want chocolate. And a foot rub. Is that asking too much??
Oh yeah, one more day in the 80s, then Friday’s high will be mid-60s. Weird weather we’re having here.
Peter’s home! Adopted Mom and I went out searching and we found him hiding in the bushes. He got a bath and now he’s trying to sit on the keyboard to let me know how unhappy he is at being wet.
Why yes, yes we did. We seem to be having a slowish week again.
Jon has grown so much! And Abby is very cute, of course.
Yay for Peter being found!
Can I pre-order lasagne for tomorrow, FCM?
Surprise dinner and breakfast? Yay! (Re-read that sentence in the morning, Pie.)
I’ve put the ceiling fan blades back together and attached them to the fan. They look very nice, I think. Took out the frame reinforcement stuff for my bed, but haven’t gotten the frame from the garage. I’m thinking I might move the box spring and mattress into the room and put them on the floor for the moment and then make my brother help me put the frame together over the weekend.
Also got the hardware out for the curtains. Might still hang those tonight.
Should have my room back for the most part by tomorrow night. Yay!!!
Back to putting away paint-related stuff and then off to bed…
To be fair, he just writes a blog and one never knows which article is gonna hit the “tickle me fancy” button of the Great Unwashed–I think he was a bit taken aback by the reaction, frankly. It read like something you write when you’re yelling at the TV in order to prevent yourself from putting a brick through your spendy equipment but in spite of the tone he made some very cogent points. BTW, glad Petercat found his way back. Pratchett managed to sneak out AGAIN this afternoon but came back pretty quickly when he heard Himself calling him. He tried to pretend he’d never been gone but that wasn’t terribly successful…
Rosie, those are VERY squeeable pix indeed! I dutifully squeed a whole bunch…
I made a batch of hotdog chili for Himself with lots of chipotle and it’s very nommy–usually I pass on eating any of it because hotdogs make me a bit queasy from all the fat but I remembered that I have some turkey cheddar brats that are only 6 gms fat per link AND some hoagie rolls so I think I’m going to indulge a bit. I’m thinking open faced sammich wtih split links on the hoagie roll, doused in chili then topped with shredded sharp cheddar and chopped onions. Mmmm, and Tums for dessert!
