oops, wrong forum.
We have been having a recurring issue, at work, that we use a third party to perform some computational tasks. We have the most expensive and high-level support contract with them and yet, every year, during our most busy season they will deploy some change and break something.
Internally, we put a moratorium on software/network changes during the busy season since we can’t afford any problems during that time period. But that’s different from what you get with a high-level support clause in a 3rd party contract. At the highest level, they still only offer a quick response.
And so, yes, after the 3rd party breaks something they are very responsive in telling us what they’re doing to fix it over the course of however many hours or days. But a fast response - after the badness has already occurred - is of limited value.
If a crazy person breaks into your house and murders you, it doesn’t matter much whether the police show up to investigate it 5 minutes later or 60 minutes.
The only real defense is to have no invader to begin with. A home alarm is good for when you’re on vacation. When you’re at home, you just need thick, impenetrable walls, doors, and windows.

I know it’s hard when a thread in MPSIMS involves political issues, but please keep politics out of breaking news threads. @puzzlegal has issued several mod notes and even created a thread in P&E for specific political commentary.
Please stop with political comments. Thanks.
You do realize this situation is ENTIRELY political, right?
When this thread was started it was breaking news about an elderly man who is married to a major politician that was attacked in his home. It has since stopped being just about breaking news and has turned more political everyday. Perhaps the thread should be closed and people can go over to the other thread. Just a thought.
I truly didn’t realize this was a breaking news thread. Usually it says “BREAKING NEWS” in the thread title. I looked at the thread title before I posted and didn’t see those key words, so I let 'her rip. Sorry.
I missed this, too. Sometimes I’m guilty of not reading every single post. Color me clueless (but otherwise well-intentioned).
Court documents state that DePape lunged at Pelosi, “striking Mr. Pelosi in the head at full force with the hammer, which knocked Mr. Pelosi unconscious.” He awoke “in a pool of his own blood.”
From Washington Post (NOT gift link)
DePape lunged at Pelosi, the documents say, “striking Mr. Pelosi in the head at full force with the hammer, which knocked Mr. Pelosi unconscious.” He was unresponsive for about three minutes, the documents say, “waking up in a pool of his own blood.” It is not clear whether that blood was from his head or from the injuries to his arm and hands.
My bold.
Here’s a gift link to the same story.
Just announced, mr pelosi has been released from hospital.
That sounds like good progress.
If the period of unconsciousness was truly only about three minutes that’s actually a positive. I mean, it’s still bad, loss of consciousness after a blow to the head is always bad on a certain level, but it’s not nearly as bad as if he were unconscious for hours or days afterward.
Him being released from the hospital at this point is, again, good in one sense but he’ll still have an extended recovery period. I hope he has no complications along the way.
And?
And the attacker commited the most serious offense after the police arrived and were closing in on him. He purposely attempted to murder Pelosi and go down fighting with the police. This should bring the maximum weight of the law on him as there no doubt as to his intent. This is why he is charged with attempted murder and not simply assualt.
May he never walk a free man again, in the US or Canada.
Video footage of the attack. Graphic. Expect to audibly gasp.
Releasing the footage ahead of any trial would be a contempt of court here.
Yes, same in Canada. Plus the comments by various law enforcement officers stating that it was murder, before ever they step foot in court.
Can you show police bodycam footage before a trial?
No. It contaminates the jury pool.
My apologies for the portion I’ve struck out. I was confused and thought we were discussing the Memphis beating, where the video is apparently going to be released tonight.
