New Florida Senate bill would eliminate state Democratic Party

But it’s not the only thing Republicans are doing.

One loud idiot puts forth an outlandish proposal like this and he draws all the public attention. Meanwhile a dozen other party operatives are quietly drafting and enacting legislation that will disenfranchise fifty thousand Democratic voters. And nobody will notice because they’re all watching the idiot and counting it as a victory when his proposal is defeated.

Isn’t that all the more reason to ignore this kind of thing? I feel very comfortable giving this nonsense no attention, while focusing on the efforts that could actually work, like you’re describing.

Maybe it’s good that the morons of the world occupy themselves with this kind of performative crap that can’t actually accomplish anything besides getting likes from people whose minds aren’t likely to be changed anyway.

I think a BBQ Pit thread about stupid shit proposed in local/state/us governments, like this steaming pile of shit, is a perfect use of the Pit. Why ignore stupid shit just because there is a large amount of it? We could make this the “omnibus stupid political ideas” thread. Wait, we already have that:

Maybe someday there will be enough stupid left perfomative bills to create the other side of that thread and make it truly omnibus. Until then, people will ask us not to bring up the crazies on the right.

No. It’s important to remind everyone of why they must oppose Republicans all of the time. Every time at the ballot box, and here’s another reason. And to borrow a phrase from my man Joe Biden: “That’s not hyperbole.”

I got the feeling that some of the posters were suggesting this is a “both sides” problem and you should ignore it, which is why I posted right above you. I know there is a bit from both sides, but one side is heavily tilting that scale.

On the one hand, I take your point. On the other…

I’ve said before I wish someone (activists, comedian maybe…) would normalize simply laughing at these people. Have a group show up at the county board meeting where one of these morons presents their nonsense and have the whole group burst into laughter. Not even unkindly. Just pointing and laughing to show it cannot be taken seriously. I think Mel Brooks might endorse this approach because he’s talked about how the one thing the Hitlers of the world absolutely cannot stand is being a laughing stock.

I love to imagine people at presidential debates just roaring with mirth at the basic tenets of Republican belief. Maybe it could even shift the Overton Window. Show these idiots they aren’t to be taken seriously. That’s all the attention this kind of thing deserves.

I don’t think we should ignore it. This guy is, after all, an elected official with real world power.

But the way we should oppose things like this is by fighting for voting rights. We need to guarantee everybody’s right to vote so that people like Blaise Ingoglia don’t win rigged elections.

After that, Ingoglia can froth at the mouth all he wants and we can safely ignore him.

At this point, Florida is the GOP’s beta test for imposing fascist rule on the rest of the country. If this passes, I fully expect to see other red states doing the same thing.

By 2026 they’ll start finding excuses to jail people for running for office against them.

This is not outright laughter on his part, but Jake Byrd is doing his best!.

You are saying DNFTT in the middle of FTT campaign headquarters.

I like that one.

If you want, you can also borrow it’s a sin to vote for a Republican.

Because that’s also true.

This is why this cannot be ignored. Even though there’s little chance of it passing (this time), it doesn’t mean they won’t try again. And they’ll keep trying.

One of my absolute favorite viral clips is this one of a guy laughing at MAGA protestors:

I think that may be a good way to get yourself shot.

I will agree with you that the media shouldn’t spend much time focussed on this, it’s just fascists virtue signalling other fascists. But I disagree that we should ignore it, as it is telling us what the fascists want and what they are trying to do.

When will I stop discussing the fascist things that fascists do? When the fascists stop doing them. Until then, it is worthwhile to pay attention to their attempts at undermining our country.

The Whig Party is pretty nebulous on their view of slavery and I don’t know if it has every been part of their official platform. I’m curious how this would affect them.

On a more serious note, IF this were to make a joke about extremist “Woke Culture” then it’s kind of funny. Problem is being Florida, I don’t think it is a joke.

So, obviously, he’s talking about the Confederate statues that are being removed here.

I wonder, has he bothered to consider, most of the people depicted in those statues were Democrats?

We need a new campaign; “Why is Sen. Ingoglia defending the display of Democrat Party heroes at public expense? Why does he want statues of antifa groomers displayed in front of our courthouses and schools?!?”

Thats… actually a really good point.

I wonder, once it is pointed out that these are statues to Democrats, the right will be clamoring to tear them down.

It is.

I’m just wondering what kind of knots they will tie themselves into in trying to explain that these Democrats should be honored, praising those who worked to support and continue the practice of slavery, but current Democrats should be eliminated, because Democrats in the past had statues made of them for supporting the continued practice of slavery.

Next time I hear someone bemoaning the loss of their culture and history because some statues were removed from in front of their courthouse, I really want to say, “You know, he was a Democrat.” just to see their reaction.

That’s missing the point though. They don’t argue that those are people that should be honored, they see it as trying to erase them from existence, scrub them from history entirely.

I mean, it’s total bullshit. History books, records, and so on will still mention what they did. It’s just the statues showing them as heroes that are being removed.

But their stance isn’t that the statues need to stay as ways to celebrate these historical figures, the argument is that we shouldn’t forget them. (Which, again, is bullshit.)
