OK, I couldn’t help but notice that there has been a steady trickle of new Reece’s peanut butter products hitting the stores. I’m not much of a candy person but I felt compelled to try each of these, so…
Swoops: One word: Yum. When looking at them, the pb seems to have minimal presence (just narrow lines on the “chip”), but they definitely are full of great pb flavor. Also, the individual cups make the temptation of snarfing 3 dozen of them in a sitting a bit more difficult. Excellent (I haven’t tried the other Swoops yet).
Inside Out Pb Cups: A chocolate center in a pb cup. I think this may have been a limited/trial release, but it was also quite delicious.
White Chocalte Pb Cups: Doesn’t quite work. The white chocolate has such a strong, distinctive taste that the pb flavor is drowned out, which defeats the whole purpose, IMHO. Also a limited/trial release, because I haven’t seen much of this either.
Fast Break: Somehow, the Reece’s thing doesn’t work for me in bar form. Or maybe it’s the nougat, but the conflicting textures also impede in the pb’s effectiveness. The name’s a good one, though, because the memory of eating one evaporates quite quickly.
So, any other thoughts or comment on Reece’s products that have entered the market?
The white chocolate are great for people like my husband, who cannot eat chocolate. He loves Reese’s pb cups, but the cost of eating chocolate is too high. So he’s happy with those.
The Fast Break bars I really, really, really like. I probably have a pound of them on my butt.
My sister and I tried the inside-out Reese’s, and neither of us liked it.
I’ve seen the swoops but didn’t try them … it seemed to me like I was getting too little bang for the buck. But I might have to try them now. And I haven’t even seen the rest. Guess I need to spend more time in the chocolate section!
I am a huge peanut butter fan. Gardner’s Peanut Butter Meltaways and Gertrude Hawk’s Peanut Butter Smidgens are the best.
Swoops are OK, as far as the Reese’s variety. If you can find them in Peppermint Patty, get several. They’re better than the original. Like a Thin Mint Pringle.
Fast Breaks are what I normally pick up. I do this out of necessity, since my kid will cute his way into relieving me of any Cups I may have. He has not discovered the greatness of the Fast Break Bar, and I intend to keep it that way.
Haven’t had the mutant cups. They just seem like an affront to nature.
The swoops look interesting, but all that packaging! They look like an excellent way to increase packaging and decrease the goodies inside…instant profit!
I have not tried the other kinds (swoops, inside out etc…) but I have had the Fasbreak bar. I think they are too soft and gooey, so I put them in the freezer, then when “frozen” they are yummy.
The swoops are delicious, but the rest didn’t do a whole lot for me. This time of year is great because of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs for Easter - its just a big ball of peanut butter covered with a little chocolate. Sadly they are only available for a limited time each year, which might explain why I eat six at a time.
I haven’t tried the Swoops, but I am making plans for my next mood swing. I think a package of Swoops and a container of Cool Whip would make excellent if not too classy dining pleasure. Or possibly marshmallow fluff.
The white chocolate cups were just bland and blah. White chocolate is not chocolate, people. But I love the Sticks…like a Reese’s peanut butter KitKat. Yum. I used to get KitKats and dip them in peanut butter and now I don’t have to.
Oh, and speaking of trial products, I was once in a discount off-brand store that sold all kinds of second-rate products. And I came across a case of dark chocolate KitKats. Absolute genius. The typical KitKat bar has a nice crunch and a subtle chocolate flavor. But the dark chocolate knocked it up several notches. Intense chocolateyness with crisp wafers. Really one of the best chocolates I’ve ever had, even including expensive imported candies. I bought several for $0.33 each and was in ecstasy.
The next time I went to the store a few weeks later the dark chocolate KitKats were gone. Like they never existed. And I’ve never seen them for sale since, anywhere. On that day I decided that there is no God.
I remember the Dark Chocolate Kit Kats (IIRC, there were also white chocolate Kit Kats and Mint chocolate, too, for a while). Those were good.
I should note that I never buy candy except if it’s a “new” item/incarnation, so I don’t really have a reliable reference point since my memory of the “original” is usually quite faded.
This has been out for a long time, but Reese’s Nutrageous candy bar is my absolute favorite. Whenever I have one, I have to sniff it from end to end, just like a fine cigar. The peanut aroma is intoxicating. If this bar is ever recast in dark chocolate, I’ll just have to buy 10 or twelve of them for an informal taste testing.
There were also ORANGE Kit Kats. My friend found the mint and orange ones at a dollar store, and they were awesome. I think orange and chocolate go great together, as well as raspberry and chocolate.
Back to Reese’s, do they still sell the actual JARS of Reese’s peanut butter? It was out around 1997, and it was so damn sweet and delicious (and probably much more unhealthy than other commercial peanut butters)–the goodness from inside of peanut butter cups, but you could eat it with a SPOON! I don’t eat peanut butter any more (heartburn), so I haven’t been paying attention lately.
