The Reese's Peanut Butter Cup tease campaign

I love dem cups. I usually snack on 2-4 per day at work, more on the weekends.

Anybody remember the crunchy PB cups from the 80’s? They were okay, but the cups tasted the same, just with crunchy bits in them. Then, a few years ago, they unleashed the Crunchy Cookie Cups. These were da bomb. They were a special treat for me because not all stores carried them and they frequently ran out if they did. Now I don’t see them sold anywhere. :frowning:

This year they have released 3 (of what appears to be 5 total) new flavors or sizes. Reese’s calls them “Limited Editions”. The Dark Chocolate one is really good, I don’t care for White Chocolate, and the BIG cup is basically 2x the size of a normal cup so it’s just a novelty. I’ll be interested to see what the Honey Roasted one tastes like, but the Inside Out cup just seems gimmicky.

Why do they tease us with these new products and then take them out of circulation? I know it probably has something to do with “test markets”, but they literally fly off the shelves around here. I’d guess that the same goes for other parts of the country too. Why manufacture a product for a short time that seems to sell well, then stop suddenly?

Since I put this in IMHO, what’s your favorite new RPBC (including the Cookie one)? Mine is the Dark Chocolate, followed closely by Cookie.

And for a secondary poll, what new flavor would you like to see produced? I was thinking a few weeks ago that one with a grape or strawberry jelly swirl through the peanut butter filling would taste pretty good. I’d also like to try one with a Bailey’s Irish Cream flavored filling. I guess it wouldn’t be a PB cup then, but I’d still go for it.

Tertiary poll: How many bites does it take for you to consume a normal sized RPBC? I take 3: first bite is about half the cup, the second and third bites are of equal size (a quarter of the original cup). I’ve seen people down the whole thing in one chomp, others have taken up to a dozen nibbles to consume the whole thing.

Heathen! Get away from those newfangled devil cups. That’s how it starts…

Seriously, sometimes a “new” or “limited edition” flavor is put out simply to advertise the brand as a whole.

And they may not be as profitable as you imagine. Each addition to the product line has to have its time on the production line and its space on the shelves. If you were Mr. Frito Lay, and you were putting out X number of 1 and 1/2 oz bags of chips every day, and you have Y amount of shelf space in the Circle K’s of the world, adding guacamole-flavor chips is going to cost you more than just making 2X regular chips. You have to change the lines over for the chips and bags and boxes, for starters. Maybe that’s just a few production hours a week, but it would add up.

Want to try a cup with Bailey’s Irish Cream? Use a baby animal feeding syringe to take some filling out, use one of these injectors to put more in. Rechill. Eat. Try not to vomit, cuz Bailey’s is nasty.

Hmmm… I don’t really like the ‘new ones’ I haven’t seen any dark chocolate ones in this area but the white chocolate ones are here. My roomie buys them so much he goes through at least 2 white chocolate bars a day on average. I went away for a week and when I came back I picked up a TON of wrappers from the bars, and there was a whole case of them in the fridge. Yes he bought a whole case to feed his addiction to them. And if anything it is an addiction.

There really is no new flavor I’d like to try. I like the traditional cups as well as the ‘sticks’ and the bits for a change. I like the taste of peanut butter and chocolate to melt on my tongue… mmmm…

As to how I eat them… well it varies. If I just want a quick fix I eat it in one or two bites. Average eating is 3 bites as you do. To savor I either take several small bites (up to 5) or I let 3-4 bites melt on my tongue each. Of course putting the cups down so I don’t get too much chocolate on my hands, or even holding them so I can lick the chocolate off!

The honey roasted ones are pretty tasty. A little sweeter than a regular Reese’s. They don’t really have a strong honey taste, though.

I like to eat mine by setting up an elaborate system of dominos to set off a catapult to launch one into my mouth. Actually, sometimes I nibble around the jagged edges before I bite into the gooey center.

The best kind will always be the original. What’s with those Reeses Pieces candy bits? I never liked those.

The white chocolate was a little too sweet for me, but I do have two brand new bags of the bite-sized regulars.

If you love Reese’s as much as I do, you might also enjoy a product that is available in the peanut butter display. It is a jar of chocolate hazlenut butter. I forget the brand names; there are at least a couple. Lord have mercy!

That would be Nutella, Zoe.

Blashphamy! Reeses Pieces make the world a better place. Them’s good eatin’.

I’ll never forgive Reeses for taking the cookie crunch one off the market. Although…I’ll still try out these novelty ones. This time I’ll be prepared: if I like one, horde the hell out of it.

And belladonna, I agree–Reeses Pieces are the best!

Russell Stover also makes peanut butter cups. A few years back they were making them with strawberry or grape jelly. “What a great idea” thinks I. So I keep an eye out and when I see a store selling them, I buy one of each.

It turns out Russell Stover is the “Brand X” of peanut butter cups. I ate one of them and it was so bad I threw out the other.

So my advice to all the young people out there is stick with the real thing - Reese’s - and accept no substitutes.

I have a system for eating my peanut butter cups. First I nibble off the edges, then I peel off the bottom layer of chocolate with my teeth and then the top layer. I save the peanut butter for last. That’s the best part!

The white chocolate cups were alright but the cookie cups rocked my world. I miss those.

You, my friend, should try the Newman’s Own cups. They make regular milk chocolate/peanut butter, dark chocolate/peanut butter, and a very tasty dark chocolate/mint cup. They don’t quite have the addictive quality of the original Reese’s (and they’re nothing compared to the much-mourned cookie cups, which ruled), but they’re a more than acceptable substitute in the pinch.

I like the regular Reese’s cups well enough but they’re usually not my first candy choice.

However, come Easter time I HAVE to buy a six-pack of the Reeses Peanut Butter Eggs. I also ‘steal’ them from my niece since she doesn’t really like them (she’s weird; takes after my brother-in-law). I’m not sure why, but the eggs just taste better than the plain cups to me.

Mmm…Reese’s Eggs…

I love those things. They’re my absolute favorite easter candy ever!

Well next to the Cadbury egg of course.

Oooo, those sound good. I haven’t seen them around here. What company makes them? Is that the same Newman that makes the salad dressings and popcorn and whatnot?

As for those wannabe M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces: bleah! E.T. obvisouly never had the real deal.

Oh it takes MUCH MORE then 3 bites to eat a RPBC.
I bite all the ridges off first. Then peel the top off, followed by the bottom and then the gooy peanut butter!

I would have to say that I like the Crunchy PB cups the most. It might have only been a “teaser” in your part of the country, but we’ve had them here ever since the 80’s, and I find them to be different from, and superior to the plain cups.

I will admit to having tried the White Chocolate PB cups. Didn’t like it at all. I love white chocolate, and I (obviously) love PB, but I don’t like the two together.

I have also tried the Honey Roasted, probably about 2 years ago, haven’t seen them since. I gave it two thumbs up at the time, and would buy more, if I could get them.

I would like to try the Dark Chocolate ones too, although I’m a bit sceptical of how the more bittersweet flavour of dark chocolate would go with peanut butter. I’ll keep an eye out.

I never had the Crunchy cookie ones, or whatever they were called. I thought that would be too much like a Twix bar, which I hate. I really should try it? (If I can still find them here, of course!)

Oh, and what do people think of Wunderbars? I like the peanutty flavour, and the texture of the middle. When I can’t find PB cups, that’s what I have.

No, no, no! I mean, PB and J sandwiches are one thing, but I just don’t want jam near my chocolate bars. I guess maybe I’m weird that way.

I’m a nibbler - I eat all the way around the edges, and then slowly nibble away at the middle. Like fizzestothetop, I do sometimes save the PB layer for last by eating the top and bottom off. However, we actually buy “bulk” boxes of PB cups from a nearby Hershey Factory, and in most of the ones we get, the PB is off center, or squishing out one side. Makes that style of eating somewhat problematic.

Once again, Reese’s (owned by Hershey) has had another of its brand ideas ‘borrowed’…this time from the Mars company in the form of Peanut Butter M&M’s.

How do the Reese’s Pieces fans think they stack up?

(Even though I’m not much of a chocolate lover - I think the PB M&M’s are better)

I think they taste fairly similar, with the M&M version possibly very slightly better.

However, I’d rather have the Reeses version…only because they come in three blatantly unattractive colors: orange, brown and yellow.

Chocolate? In my peanut butter?

EWWW!
