In Arizona the governor picks but the replacement has to be registered in the same party as the one leaving or deceased. I would suppose there are enough DINOs to go around, though. I can’t imagine Ducey taking input from the Democrat officials.

So what if a Governor is required to appoint a Senator of the party opposed to himself? Such a governor can always find a suitable RINO or DINO (as the case may require) for the job.

It was then pointed out that, at least in some states:

The Kentucky bill would, as in some other states, require the governor to choose from a shortlist drawn up by the party.
