NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 2)

I have a feeling that’s not why @crowmanyclouds was suggesting “jo͝on(t)ə

A QOP Senate candidate in Maryland has been arrested for filing a false police report claiming that child trafficking was happening at the adult novelties store he works at (which he claims he’s only working at because he’s undercover trying to bust a drug ring).

Adult novelties and pizza?

He uses two names, one of which includes the title “Dr.” He has other theories to expound as well.

Dr. Dark!!!

I was thinking, “McGreevey? More like McSkeevy!”

Because jo͝on(t)ə is the English pronunciation of the English word “junta,” and ho͝on(t)ə is the Spanish pronunciation of the Spanish word “junta.” Just like we pronounce “llama” as la-ma and not ya-ma. Now stop making me defend these jackasses.

It’s definitely not.

He looks like a 7th-rate Lex Luthor.

It is. I don’t have OED access, so hopefully this will do.

Usage Note: For a long time this 18th-century borrowing from Spanish was pronounced (jŭn′tə) by English speakers on both sides of the Atlantic. By the middle of the 20th century, however, the pronunciation (ho͝on′tə), an approximation of the Spanish pronunciation, had gained currency in the US. This word is now usually pronounced (ho͝on′tə) in American English and (jŭn′tə) in British English.

Ah, well, England. They can’t pronounce “valet” correctly, so I’m not sure why we’re looking to them on “junta.”

Seriously, though, we’re talking about Republicans, not English people. As your cite notes, the American pronunciation mirrors the Spanish pronunciation.

My cite also notes that the American pronunciation was the same as the British pronunciation for a couple centuries before switching to a quasi-Spanish pronunciation.

And also notes that it stopped being the dominate pronunciation about seventy years ago.

Which would be the mid-50s. 1955 was Roberto Clemente’s rookie year in the Majors. Something something something. Massive Leap of Faith. That’s why they had to kill him, making it look like a plane crash.

What was Biden doing in 1955?

Damn it man! The sheeple are not ready for this kind of Truth!

I believe he was filling out his AARP paperwork.

AARP (the American Advanced Research Projects agency) being the WWII forerunner of DARPA of course.

IMO, the pronunciation of “valet” depends on its meaning. A val-ette is a gentleman’s gentleman. A val-AY is the guy who parks your car at a fancy restaurant.

Which one is the piece of minor furniture that I hang up my clothes on when I go to bed?
