It is just like most everything else: if you use it properly, it will let you live. Hell, we have heard enough stories of people dying of stupid – if you drink enough water, it will flush your electrolytes and you will be toes-up. Fentanyl is very dangerous, but not “deadly” if used right.
When I had cataract surgery the anesthesiologist said he was going to use some fentanyl for pain, in addition to anesthesia. I declined the fentanyl. My eyeball was a bit sore afterward, but I asked for an icepack and the pain went away in half an hour or so.
